For the past 2 weeks I’ve been eating anywhere from 800 to 1280 calories a day and my weight won’t budge even 2 oz. it’s basically even the same in the afternoon and at night when your supposed to weigh more. It’s very very strange.

So I weighed myself this afternoon around 1 and I was 170. I ate low cal all day and I just weighed myself tonight and I was 171. How am I gaining weight from eating low calorie? Please someone tell me what I’m doing wrong. Today I had a Coke, a Panera bread bowl, and a steak. It all equaled to 1,240 calories. It shouldn’t be possible for me to gain on that amount of calories. Please someone help. I have barely any appetite from the increase in topamax. I feel like I should be losing a lot of weight.

I eat that stuff in moderation. I allow it in my house because I have control over it. I bought a couple bags of kits Kat’s a week ago and I’ve only had a couple. Part of successful dieting is allowing yourself the occasional junk food or you will fail miserably But seriously these past few weeks have been very strict calorie counting and eating relatively healthy. And I have been counting very accurately. I also haven’t had those “boxes” come in a couple months.

You need to weigh in the morning before you eat....the food is heavier than it’s calories and you get bloating from sugar or salt consumption along with water......I don’t think you’re gaining weight in this scenario.....

You never mention fruit or vegetables, just steak. Everything else is processed. I agree its low calorie. I just wonder if your liver and therefore your metabolism is slowed down because of it. I think thats what happened to me. I never had a balanced diet.

1. Scale, most digital scales won't budge until it is sure you lost significant weight. It just gives you the same result.

2. Batteries in the scale.. sometimes for me it makes a difference.

3. If you actually look into it the calories we think we eat is not correct. There are three things that can make the calories you get different than what they tell you.

a. Make up of the food. If the food has parts of it that are difficult to eat, such as resistant starch, we don't digest them. An example of this are nuts. Nuts say that they are 170 calories for 15 or so... but it has been proven that since we can't digest them fully, we only get about 120 cals.

b. Heat processing. Do you know it is suspected that fire is the reason that humans grew to the dominate species on the planet. Heat unlocks more calories in the food to be available to us.

c. Bacterial make up of your gut. Certain bacteria in you gut has been proven to extract more energy out of food than other bacteria. So you eat a 200 calorie meal, your thin buddy extracts 150 cals out of the food, you extract 240.

4. the scale itself is not a good maker of fat loss. When you lose fat, your body replaces that fat with water in the cell for a while. If you don't replace the fat, it lets the water out and you go down in weight.

5. As I mentioned it is entirely possible that as a species out calorie needs are much less than what we have been told. My mother died of stomach cancer at 83. But the weird thing is we never knew she was sick because she had been not eating and throwing up for months buts he didn't lose weight. In fact after a few weeks on a feeding tube... she hadn't lost any weight.

6. Consider the hormonal theory of weight loss. There are some doctors that say that calories are useless... that the real key to weight loss is hormonal. When you eat you release insulin, insulin is a fat storage hormone... so if you eat less period or eat less that will release insulin, you will store less fat. It is well known that both Keto, carnivore, and fasting result in weight loss for those who previously had trouble with it. Currently the only thing for me that *for sure* results in weight loss, is a 36 hour water fast.

There have been studies done where if you lock a person in a room (voluntarily) and control their calorie intake the participants will lose weight 100% of the time, no exceptions.

So to answer your question succinctly, it is impossible not to lose weight if your calorie intake is lower than your calorie burn rate.

With the said it doesn't mean it's easy to lose weight. Something you might need to remember that might help, food manufacturers are allowed a 20% margin on what they declare as calorie content. Many of them take advantage of this and purposely under declair on the pack so your 1 200 calories a day could legally be as high as 1,439 calories. that's not mentioning that in studies most people massively underestimate the portion sizes they're, unknowingly consuming more calories than they think.

The only way around this really is to 20% to the calorie count of everything g you eat and to measure all portions

What was in a bread bowl? Soup? What kind? How big was a steak? Are you on meds? Do you drink water? Are you eating snacks between meals? Do you not eat any fruits and veggies? Do you move around enough when off work? Lots of factors

Just to give you an idea how powerful water weight can be. Last week I ate normally but not enough to gain weight. About 1500 per day. According to my scale... I went up 3 lbs. This weekend I have fasted (just 36 hour fast) which typically makes me piddle out all my water.

I have lost 4 lbs. So water can really obscure weight loss in the short term.

Can stress cause weight can no matter what you do? These past 2 weeks I’ve really been trying hard and my weight still won’t budge. I paid $267 for a meal service. I cut out fast food and junk food. I added a lot of fruits and vegetables. I have been counting 1200-1250 calories exactly and nothing is working. I am under a tremendous amount of stress. But I’m not overeating. I really don’t get it.

From my time at weight watchers, ive heard that people can hit a plateau, where, after steadily losing, their weight will remain the same for several weeks or months. They are advised to stick with it, or "switch something up" - try eating more, try exercising more, eating less of one kind of food and more of another, idk what all.

Also re stress - it makes the body produce cortisol, which makes you put on belly fat, regardless of calories. Its like it just shoots fat to your belly.

Also, re your meds changing, you may be losing fat and gaining muscle (which weighs more but takes up less space), so why dont you take your bodily measurements? Didnt you say your clothes were getting looser? Your waist measurement may be a better indicator of your fit or fatness.

There was a study called MATADOR that showed your body starts reducing calories burned by 14 days into reduction in calories. However, it wasn't a large amount and generally took about 3 months before substantial reductions were noticed.

The recommendation was to diet for 2 weeks and then eat no more than your calories burned for two weeks.

This study showed if you did that you would lose more weight and put less back on because your metabolism would not reduce as much.

I have been dieting since the new year. I have noticed I will not lose pounds unless I eat below 1,000 calories.

I think I am sensitive to the chemicals in processed foods. I can't eat anything processed. I am also sensitive to sodium. And carbs. So I am on a low carb vegetarian diet which means I limit grains, don't eat bread, pasta or any processed carbs.

You might notice that people online who drop a lot of weight always drink tons of water. I suspect this keeps flushing excess sodium and chemicals out of their system. As fat breaks up it can release stored up chemicals in the bloodstream.

If the scale doesn't budge I start drinking more water and that always works.

I am losing weight at a snail's pace. I have to keep making adjustments. I am kind of shocked at how hard it is but it is better to "bite the bullet" and buckle down...instead of being on an unsuccessful dieting regime for months, even years, which I have done.

I also can't allow any "cheats" at all. If I eat anything but plain food the scale won't budge.

The problem is reading about everyone else's success stories like how they large amounts of weight in a short period of time. Some people take two years to lose excess weight. We just don't like reading those stories. Quick weight loss can result in eating disorders. I stopped reading everything online about dieting because a lot of it is toxic material.

I have lost 12 pounds since the beginning of the year...which works out to to be about 1 1/4 pounds a week. That's within the recommended rate of losing weight...but losing weight this slowly is a torture. As a young person I would have lost this much in a month...not two and a half months. But we have to adjust our expectations to the "here and now."

You need to cut out what isn't working and do more of what is. I have found that dieting requires being hungry a lot because you have to lower calories enough to lose...and yeah, one is going to be hungry. Put distractions in place. Give yourself non-food rewards. Have patience. Dieting is hard and just plain sucks.

I am exactly the same. And actually have always been. I remember when I was younger I would eat one or two hershey kisses at work and it could completely stop me from losing for the entire week. People do not understand this and are constantly shoving food at me and expecting me to eat it in front of them.

I am absolutely lost at the moment on what I should eat or do.

It really feels like my body is screaming at me that it doesn't want to lose weight and will take measures to stop me from doing so or punish me for trying.

- when I eat less than 1200 cals my body's immune system drops.
- I tried fasting but that caused me horrific back pain and bad immunity.
- I heard such stories of fasting working better but, nope, even fasting I had to eat 1000 calories and do a 36 hour fast once per week to lose weight. And it sure didn't come off fast.
- I know from prior diets if I white knuckle it for 1 year and lose 50 lbs I will only gain it back because my metabolism will reduce.
- I would give exercise a try but I suspect due to my slow metabolism, I need to do a LOT of exercise to get results and I just don't have the time. 2 hours or so.

I continue to think about what to do. I have to lose this weight. It is becoming life or death.

I relate to this 100%!!! I tried fasting and now I feel for me it is TERRIBLE.

I am still doing under 1,000 calories daily but today I felt tired. I worried this isn't good for my immune system. HOWEVER, I am not sure if that is a fact. Because being obese it REALLY bad for the immune system. Being overfat creates inflammation in the body.

This is nothing like dieting when I was young. I am certain I must have cheated when I was younger just like you said. When younger I was social, and always worked at non-profits where they always were having parties with delicious food. I also drank alcohol.

I KNOW that a diet under 1,000 calories seems bad but honestly...I tried for a few years to lose weight and NOTHING HAPPENED. I think I was probably eating around 1200 to 1500 calories.

I do take medication for hypothyroidism. Maybe as I get older being hypo makes it very difficult to lose weight.

Exercise is good for everyone. But I believe what I read that losing weight is 80% dieting.

I am finding it difficult. Ridiculously difficult to lose this weight.

I have a target weight I want to reach this year. I hope to never gain it back.

Personally I think everyone who loses a lot of weight is keeping to very low calories and maybe doesn't want to talk about it because it seems "wrong." My scale showed another pound lost this morning but I felt like cursing at the scale. It is is like some extremely evil taskmaster!

Someone on here mentioned that studies indicate that people don't know how much they are eating.

I do think it is a good tip to measure everything.

I would say my main diet problem is overeating and not realizing it. If I don't measure out oatmeal, for instance, before cooking it...if I just pour it out...I will pour much more than 1/2 cup dry oatmeal.

Now I try to eat things that are easy to calculate...like an egg...or an apple...or a piece of celery. I try to avoid things I have to portion out.

I hate measuring out every single thing I eat but I do think it makes a big difference.

I tracked my exercise for a contest at work in the early 2000's, and lost 20 lbs in 10 weeks by exercising about 10 hrs a week, taking some rest days, but usually doing one or two activities a day - swimming, walking, lifting weights, or stationary cycling. 10 hrs a week always has been my cut off - less time than that, and i dont lose fast enough to notice or keep it up.

Twenty years ago...
Dieting wise that's like another lifetime...
I think every 20 years we need a totally new strategy...
