It seems even when I eat low calorie (1200) my scale doesn’t budge. But if I eat 1400 calories my weight goes up 4 pounds. I’ve started a new med but the hunger affect seems to have died down. But even now that I’ve gone back to eating normally I’ve found I can no longer eat the same and lose weight the way I was able to without the med. Is the med doing some type of damage to my metabolism? Can you not lose weight and possibly even gain even if you aren’t eating a lot?

Depends on the meds but yes...some meds like antipsychotics can change your microbial flora which can change your weight in a calorie independent manner...

Just in terms of the initial question, I'm pretty sure some people have a great deal of difficulty losing weight - can't lose weight, yes. And it could be for a variety of reasons...

I'm sure the internet will have more info about it, though.

Yes. I suspect I have the problem. I also cannot reliably lose weight unless I eat under 1000 per day. But I can eat 1500 cals per day and NOT gain. It is like the math doesn't add up.

I have had my metabolism tested three times now and I can tell you my RMR was different each time. Once very low 1200, once reasonable 1450 and when I was at my fattest, 1550.

At one point I started on a liquid diet. I was supposedly eating 800 per day but the weight just flew off. I lost 3 lbs a week. This made no sense as I had been eating 1000 of real food. I now wonder if I was losing mostly muscle and glycogen. But I also wonder if there is a some difference between food and water calories.

If you want to drop down to 800 calories I would recommend that you do that for two weeks,,, and then stop and eat normally for two weeks. A study called the "Matador" study showed that if you did this your body would not adapt and thus you would lose more weight and put less back on.

I know someone who is insulin resistant & no matter what she does she gains. There can be issues caused by meds that can cause this too....so yes, it is possible.

It seems like when I start a diet I lose 5 pounds of water weight overnight and then I immediately plateau. I don’t get these people who can lose 20 pounds in a month.

Can you ask your doctor to do some blood testing to rule out insulin resistance and such? I'm sure that some medications do change the body's digestive system. It also can be a mix of lifestyle, and genetics, and age. There's just too many factors to say "this one thing is the cause" of your weight gain.

Well when I hit menopause I started to have huge trouble with losing weight. It’s rough. I have to pretty much severely limit my calorie intake in order to lose weight. I can. It’s just hard

On the other hand I have a coworker who has some health problems and is on meds that she says makes it impossible to lose weight. But at the same time things she eats at lunch are fat slices of pepperoni pizzas, big bowls of spagetty and meatballs etc I’ve never seen her eating anything even remotely light. So I can’t say for sure but maybe she’d lose if she ate less or lighter meals.

Well I have metabolic syndrome thanks to numerous psych meds over the years.

It makes it much much harder to lose weight for sure ., my doctor said if he wanted to lose 5 lbs it’s like it would take me likely 3 times longer. Yeah big bummer thought

I’ve got some physical crap going on with my breathing so doing any kind of exercise is out, I barely got around my grocery store earlier. It’s expected to clear up but we just aren’t sure.

Once I can get back on a biologic medication for my PsA and can truly even get out for brisk walks if I am determined to stay on track food wise across the board , I know I will be able to lose weight, albeit slower than slow.

I tried Metforum for possible weight loss but it just gave me diarrhea.

Because I have Bipolar no Doctor is going to give me any medications to “ speed “ me up.

Nothing is impossible but sometimes it just takes a lot longer than we wish it would.

I saw this study today - it says human beings have been cooling off since the civil war. The normal body temp is no longer 98.6. The reason? They suspect that our basil metabolic rate is reducing as well - just because modern life is so easy. If true, everyone could be eating too much.

I do think my metabolism is a bit off. A few days of low cal and the scale is basically the same. One steak dinner and I’m up 4 pounds. I’ve been maintaining my weight since Christmas. I honestly think I should be losing though. My doctor just changed my meds yesterday so hopefully I’ll see some results.

I don't know if you exercise at all, but this is a major factor in losing weight. Diet is not enough I think.

No it is the other way around. Exercise is good for your health but only makes about a 20% difference for losing weight.

Now I’m 3 pounds less then I was yesterday. So Idk. I drank a lot of weird health supplements though and didn’t eat much.

Yeah I’ve been the same weight for 3 days despite eating low cal. I’m telling you I lose 5 pounds overnight and then my weight just plateaus and I can’t lose anymore.

And I for sure can’t lose weight on 1400 calories a day even with exercise.

I dont think theres a day to day correlation between what you eat and exercise and what you weigh. I believe its an average over time. Like months.

Question: Are you actually overweight? Does your BMI show you as overweight?

I ask because you seem pretty preoccupied with your weight.

You might try not stepping on the scale except once a week. Weight can vary from day to day, even from morning to evening, so weighing every day can actually cause issues because you aren't seeing a longer term change.

Continue to eat healthily. If you are on a med that is prone to causing weight gain, just be consistent with your intake and keep up some reasonable exercise if for no other reason but to keep your metabolism active. If over time you start seeing weight gain despite being consistent about your diet and exercise, then talk to your doctor about the medications you are on. It is not unusual for certain meds to just be prone to weight gain: I had to stop one particular med because I gain 15 pounds in about two weeks. My pdoc was quite willing to change to something more weight neutral.

If you aren't actually overweight statistically, have you discussed the possibility of body dysmorphia or an eating disorder with a therapist?

I’m about 23 pounds overweight. I just got off a med last night that caused me to gain about 16 pounds. My therapist has talked about me having an eating disorder before but she’s also been full of herself before too.
