How much do you share about your illness or what’s going on in your life in general on Facebook or other places? Some people say that sharing stuff about mental illness is brave and not attention seeking. Yet I don’t think it’s quite that black and white. I think at some point it does cross over to attention seeking behavior. Plus some people really do it for attention. I personally don’t share much of anything besides cat pictures and new foods that are coming out. Maybe if something seriously significant happens in my life I’ll share it. Most personal stuff I just don’t feel like it’s anyone’s business.

I share next to nothing on social media. Sometimes I have the urge to post things, but really, I just get depressed when I look back on those memories on Facebook, even if they are positive (or somewhat so).

I don’t share much. I only have anonymous accounts under wrong names where I post poetry, musings and thoughts.

I share nothing on FB. Like I have never made a post ever that wasn't a request for one of my games.

All the people on my Facebook i know..
I share a ton ! I always have my acct under private so only my friends can view , sure a hacker could break in but hell what are they going to see ?? Sarcastic humor memes , or I’ll do a check in if my husband and I are getting dinner somewhere, or I share lots of pictures of my daughter she’s 29, Oh and my Dogs they are always getting posted. I post about the boring drives from Tennessee to Florida we take numerous times a year. I didn’t post any mental health stuff nor did I post about my BP , I was diagnosed at 43 Well one day I found a meme it was a positive /supportive message about Mental illness .. I was like F it , I’m coming out of my Bipolar closet... the feedback I got was amazing , 10-15 people send me messages, they also had Bipolar or have depression or any MI I just posted freely. I’d put a post up at times about struggling with Bipolar up or down, oh I’ll post “ I’m off to see the wizard” which everyone knew was my T I enjoy the hell out of Facebook , I don’t get upset when people post happy pictures or pics of new cars or homes . I’m happy for them , even if I’m depressed it doesn’t bother me I have no issues with paranoia so that’s probably why I have no trouble sharing things People are bothered when someone posts a good pic of them selves .. LOL I know for a fact they probably took 20 pics to find one tell like. Because I have too do the same thing. My pic here ? That took probably 25 until I liked one enough I keep in touch with old childhood friends that are scattered across the country or live in other countries now , see lots of picks of our kids and granddaughter, If someone ever felt the need to try and find me ?? Or stalk me ? Not that anyone would bother, if someone can find me out in the middle of no where they can talk to my shotgun. I know based on this topic coming up so often here that I share a lot more than most, People can use and share as much as they are comfortable with on social media across the board. I went manic as hell once and was posting a lot of long some nonsensical rambling I was flooded with messages asking if I was okay.. then my husband was getting messages from loads of people .. He posted on his page “ She’s okay just talking a million miles an hour “ I gotta find my ear plugs. LOL I do NOT post anything religious or political, I have lots of friends and everyone has there own opinionS I’m not going ruin a friendship if we disagree , I’d rather share recipes ha! I personally am not posting about my BP to get “ attention” i post things because it’s my page and maybe that post I made with suicide hotline numbers , I do it usually weekly ??? It might have saved a life of one of my friends silently struggling ... I cant wrap my head around that idea of doing it for attention.. I dunno maybe some people do Rambling I said ? Yes I think I’m doing that now LOL __________________ Helping others gets me out of my own head ~ |

As I have said before and for reasons I have mentioned before, I don't do any traditional social media. I have belonged to a bike site, which I just fired, as some a-hole physically threatened me, and here. I belonged and was very active on a big headphone site for many years, but someone there censored a critical review I did of a manufacturer they felt was dear, so I quit that, as well. Quitting both sites was absolutely the right choice for me. Nobody walks all over me.
I decided long ago that I was going to be totally out there with my illness, interestingly enough, after having been massively discriminated against at a work situation. Some people are uncomfortable with that and that's great. I then know I do not want to hang out with them. I can cross them off the list, as it were. Why would I possibly ever want to hang with someone that doesn't like mentally ill people? __________________ When I was a kid, my parents moved a lot, but I always found them--Rodney Dangerfield |

I don't have any social media, but even if I did I wouldn't share anything about my illness there. I don't even share it in real life with anyone other than my wife and therapist/pdoc. I don't expect most people to understand and I don't like drama. I do share here, but only as much as I can without deanonimizing myself (I hope).

I no longer share anything personal on Fb. I'm happy to say that I barely use the site at all anymore. About 1 1/2 years ago I shared something personal, thinking that a few close friends would see my post and offer some friendship, some support. Turns out that loads of people lurk on Fb and the sneaks got all up in my business. In short, a disaster for me. After that, all I share is a very occasional comment if a celebrity dies. I wish people a happy birthday. Pretty much it. I miss email as a form of communication and I'm truly sorry I ever joined Facebook.
On PC? I openly share because I trust the community here. My only issue is that I get lazy about writing long posts. Sometimes I'd like to share more than I do, just for that reason. __________________ |

Sorry, I meant to type deanonymize. Sometimes I want to say something here but I avoid doing it if it's too unique to my situation because I don't want people in real life to be able to identify me. |

Years ago, I linked my blog to various social media. It became clear soon that that was a terrible idea. I had to break the links, but it was too late, in some cases. Now, I don't feel the same freedom to post in my blog. Everything has become superficial, except on places where I have more anonymity, like PC. Even situations like having a relative make political statements that shock you can be rough to see. Though you may hear such stuff face-to-face, social media is a platform where people jump on bandwagons. Soon you may start reading people saying that all people on SSDI are leeches on society, and should rather be on the streets than collecting money. That's just one example.
I see the appeal of social media, and understand it's benefits, but it does have more than its share of negatives. |

This is becoming a real issue for me, as I have decided to finish writing this book about the hospital. And I have also decided that I do not want it to be published posthumously--there are some time-sentsitive issues at play, in my opinion. It should be done soon. But then what? If I go to a traditional publisher, they will want obviously to use my name. And even if they don't, probably 100 people who work at the hospital or were/are patients there will instantly know who the author is. You can't hide that sort of thing from people who know you, obviously. So, very unsure of how to handle this. And if I couldn't share here on PC openly as I do, well, that would probably be the end of me, truthfully. You guys keep me going. Thank you so much!! But I may have figured a way around this. Am going to think about it. A pseudonym, again, willl never, ever work--some clever reporter with contacts at the hospital will have this figured out in 3 hours and dump it on her site. It's so obvious. But I may have a workable way around it. More to follow. __________________ When I was a kid, my parents moved a lot, but I always found them--Rodney Dangerfield |

I had a link to my site on my dj page on fb. On my website I talk about my illness in the front page and about section. I used to have intros talking about mental illness for my mixes and radio shows.
I am not afraid to let people know I have a mental illness. I think the more we talk about it and show that we are pretty much normal when receiving treatment it will reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. I also know there are people listening that have a mental illness and to let them know they are not alone is something as an artist reaching people I can possibly help them feel a bit better, even just for an hour or 2. I have permanently deleted fb altogether and am not on any social media except for instagram for my art, but also link to my art site and talk about mental illness there for the same reasons as my dj site. |

@bpcyclist You could use a pseudonym, but why should you? You can write about your journey in your prologue and how you came to the decision to be forthright and not hide your identity from your medical colleagues, because this time in your life deeply impacted you, and you hope to inspire others who are on the same journey as they read your memoir.
You can change the names of your colleagues in your memoir to protect yourself legally, or just refer to them in a vague way, not by name. Maybe read some descriptions of these memoirs to help you decide how to proceed on the anonymity front. A good number of staff people actually knew I was doing this project while I was there and helped me obtain documents and information I never would have had access to otherwise. They all violated their contracts and would be fired, possibly prosecuted in at least one case I cannot go into. Let's just say she saved my ***, big-time. Love that woman. She took a huge, huge risk to protect me. So, staff get protected. But I will be totally outted. That does come with some downside, in the social media arena, but I have a strategy to deal with all that. And I am going to tell the publisher up front that there will be no book tour. I'll blame it on my illness--too unstable, blah. Might agree to some very limited number of questions from a couple reporters I do know, like, and trust from old NY days and here. We'll see. Thank you a thousand times for those links. I have not read all those books, obviously. Of course, since I am in this state, I am well aware of Cuckoo's Nest, which was about and filmed at the actual hosptial I lived at for so long. I'll have to pick a couple of the others and read them. __________________ When I was a kid, my parents moved a lot, but I always found them--Rodney Dangerfield |
