Hi everyone, I am a registered nurse in an ambulatory surgery center that is currently shut down. I have been looking to bring myself up to speed on the Coronavirus, management plans, safety for medical personnel etc., and I’ve come across some free courses aimed at medical professionals-

I am wondering if anyone has done these or similar courses? Has your workplace provided you with recommendations on relevant courses to do? Are you aware of any central resource that lists courses for medical personnel? What is everyone doing training wise? Thank you for your time!

Dear FUNNYRN89,

I have the most profound respect for RN's and cannot even put into words how much I admire and respect the work you do. It is so amazing and awe-inspiring. With the SARS-COVID-19 pandemic, I hope you will be safe. So many medical professionals are falling ill and perishing from this microbe. I don't know where these individuals find the courage to head into danger zones and risk their own lives to help others. Many have families and fear bringing illness back to their own homes and relatives.

This novel SARS-COVID-19 is causing unprecedented situations where people are "flying on an airplane that they are building while they fly."

In ideal conditions there is a kind of calm where medical researchers do their research and offer their findings along with the caveats about quality of study, duration of study, scope and range of study, confounding factors, and so on. Now the pressure is on these researchers to do the same quality of work but at a pace that is unheard of. My heart goes out to all of them too.

Since I am not a medical professional I do not know about the courses you write of. Hopefully other medical professionals who see your post will respond to it as quickly as possible with information that is useful and very helpful to you.

I am so very, very sorry I cannot be helpful. My heart goes out to you!

Sincerely yours -- Yao Wen

My husband is RN. He works as his hospital is open. They received next to zero additional training. It’s quite nightmarish

So I work with medical researchers and we create materials for these kinds of things and I will tell you that nothing existed for this. Medical professional societies are scrambling to make recommendations and create the proper training materials that are accurate. Unfortunately a lot of what you see flying around social media is inaccurate or incomplete and leaving out important information.

I know we're working day and night right now to get the right resources to clinical staff across the country. Everyone is exhausted and with the changing situation it's very challenging. Plus there is a limitation on funds. New funds are for development of therapeutics and vaccines, not for training materials for providers or education for patients. Except prevention is the first step and that requires education! Ug.

Thank you for your service FUNNYRN, seesaw and Divine 1966. Divine1966, I like to acknowledge spouses of those offering any type of service to humanity. Spouses and families so often sacrifice as well.

yaowen, it's such a pleasure to read your heartful response. Beautiful.

I can't add more than yaowen. I, too hold deep appreciation, admiration and gratitude for everyone on the front line, as well as behind the lines.

FUNNYRN, I love your name!
