Has anyone noticed this? I’ve noticed people are becoming a lot more snippy and are just rude in general. Not even just to me. But I feel as a society we are not as nice as were before, and things are not being done the right way. This all happened today.

I was at Sonic today. I was the only in the drive thru. I waited 15 minutes for an iced coffee and a drink. 15 minutes passed and the guy said the coffee was bad and he had to make another pot and he told us to pull up. Another 10 minutes came back and he handed us the coffee. I don’t usually complain but it seems ridiculous to wait 25 minutes for an iced coffee.

Then my mom wanted to buy something at Home Depot. She had a lot of questions to ask. When we left I looked behind me and I saw the employee roll her eyes dramatically at her other coworker. My mom was not being rude or annoying at all.

Then at the grocery store a lady was blocking an asile with her cart. She didn’t move so My mom said that we could go around. The lady said “perfect” in a sarcastic tone.

It’s just this type of stuff I’m noticing more and more and not even with my own family and I but with strangers as well. Should I complain to Sonic about the iced coffee wait? Because I have had issues with this Sonic 3 other times and it’s the only one near me. So I can’t go to a different one.

I have this theory that it could have something to do with people having flexible work schedules. Some stores are going to be just as crowded during the weekdays as they are on the weekends. Peoples stress levels are going to be higher if the store is jam packed on a Wednesday at 1PM.

I don't notice anything different here, people are quite polite and kind. Perhaps part of it relates to location. In Ontario people tend to be quite nice, especially in smaller cities/towns.

I complained to Sonic a few minutes ago. I never complain to any company. But I am losing my patiences and a lot of people would probably complain about a 25 minute wait for a single coffee.

I have not personally noticed more rudeness in my neck of the woods. But I did read that the numbers indicate that "hate crimes" have risen. Though those are obviously two different categories: rudeness and hate crimes.

With regard to rudeness, I make it a point to self-monitor...am I being a peaceful presence everywhere I go? Am I giving people the benefit of the doubt? My brother has something called a negative attribution bias. If we were walking down a busy street and he accidentally got bumped by someone in the crowd, he would immediately assume that someone was out to get him/shoved him on purpose. Whereas I would assume there was a lack of space and it got crowded and then move on with my day.

With regard to rudeness or negative traits in others, I try to train myself not to look for them, if that makes sense. If like my brother, I walked around with a large chip on my shoulder, I'd find all kinds of things to be upset about in others. If I look for goodness in others wherever I go, I am more likely to find it. When I don't find it, I step back from such a person and re-route. It's much much easier said than done but I try.

For example, there is an employee at my local store who irritates me. When I use the self-check (my preference) he hovers around and often gives me directions on how to use the device even though I already know how to do it. I was thinking about this the other day. I could interpret him as arrogant and checking up on me with the hovering or assuming I'm going to steal. Or I could assume that he is trying to be helpful in his own way and takes his job quite seriously. Who knows? I'm not in his mind.

Did you say it was the drive-through? Perhaps you would get better service if you go inside? I've done that for food before if I'm in a hurry. Easier to see what's going on and get prompt service.

I don’t think you can go in at Sonic. I think you can only order at the drive thru or one of those other car ordering machines. I tried ordering from one of those one time and I waited 5 minutes and no one took my order. I never tried one again. But yeah if I could go into Sonic that would be a lot easier.

Maybe that’s what happened. I know their ice cream machine was broken one time.

That's a shame I've actually never been to a Sonic so I didn't know. What do they serve there? It's starting to sound delicious except for the poor service!

This rudeness is especially pronounced when it comes to cell phones. I have seen people order and pay for their coffee while talking on the phone. I have seen them out in eating establishments. I hate them in the movie theater. It seems like everyone thinks that what they are doing is so important that they get to be rude.

I’m not sure if I’m just noticing rudeness more as I get older or if there does seem to be more rude behavior... I definitely feel annoyed with rude behavior. I have decided to make an extra effort every day to be a more considerate person. This is how I am coping with my annoyance at rudeness. I’m trying to be the change I wish to see in the world... so I let extra cars in even when I am in a hurry or don’t really want to... I stand and hold doors and I try to be extra patient and kind with people on the phone at work. Stuff like that. It takes a little bit of effort so if I focus on paying it forward maybe I won’t be as focused and annoyed when people are rude... when that one car lets me in or somebody holds the door for me I feel really good that I am part of that too and somebody is doing the same for me. I also notice when I’m not very polite either... sometimes it’s due to my absent mindedness and usually it’s because I’m in a hurry. I am a work in progress too... I guess we can strive for a balance.... be as polite as we can and also give people some space because we all have bad days sometimes. People are ruder lately?

At least face the other way! I couldnt figure out WHO he was talking to - his mother? His brother? He was sooooo bragging! And yes i had my earplugs in!

They serve all American food. Hot dogs, chicken, hamburgers, cheese fries. In the summer they have ice cream slushes. Which are icees mixed with ice cream. The blue raspberry one mixed with vanilla ice cream is really good. And their iced coffee is my favorite.

The main reason I like going there is they have their full menu all day. I think they open at 7. So if I don’t want to wait until 11 for a burger and fries from McDonald’s I can go to Sonic and get one at 9:30AM when I am usually running errands.

I haven’t gotten a reply from them yet.

People are more and more stressed today especially in the working field. I find there are some very rude people but they do not get much of my attention and i try to avoid it at all costs. There is no excuse to be rude.

Humans are continually oscillating between darkness and light. All of us across our lifespans. That has been the case since the beginning of humanity. Again, as long as there have been humans, there has been tribalism and bigotry and war. And there has also been compassion and courage and love.

People are frustrated. No doubt. And there are also plenty of hopeful people spreading light and love in the world. Look at PC as an example. Everyone here has suffered in some way. Many continue to suffer. And yet they are here offering hugs and empathy and hope to others regardless of their race or religion or class.

People are in too much of a hurry. They get stressed; then the rudeness spills out. What annoys me more are people who shout into their phones. I walked out of a restaurant once when a friend was taking a call, and not asking if I'd mind.

Oh, and chammers. People who talk with their mouths full, or interrupt me when I'm talking.

I hope I wasn’t rude today. I was in the grocery store wearing my white jacket. Not a work uniform at all. An older man and his two granddaughters came up to me. The guy had an accent and was hard to understand and said “can I ask you something?” I had no idea what he wanted so I said “yeah.” Then he started asking if the store had something and then one of the granddaughters who was about 9 asked me if I worked there. I said no. The guy gave me a look. And we walked away.

I had no idea what he wanted when he first came up to me and I felt like I would have been ruder say right off “I don’t work here.”
