can you name all 50 US states without looking them up?

I was doing this this morning (seeing how many I could name) and got to about 40 (shocked chicago and baltimore arn't states), then looked them up to find the other 10.

without looking them up, can you name all the states from memory?- or how many do you think you can name.

There’s this song we learned in elementary school called “Fifty Nifty United States.” To this day I always get confused with the states that start with “New” I always skip the “New” part of the song and go straight to Utah for some reason. It’s a bad song to get stuck in your head though.

I'm sure I could, but having a blank map of the US would help me out. I would not be successful at naming all of the US states' capital cities. I might also mix up the locations of a couple of Canada's provinces. Sorry, my Canadian PC members!

I could identify most all of the countries in Europe, especially with a blank map of European countries outlined. [Maybe a little weak on the Balkan countries.] I'm better at their capitals, than US state capitals. I'd do OK in Asia, but probably get the "stans" (like Uzbekistan) mixed up and a few other countries. I'd know the capital cities of the major Asian countries, but not all. I'd do comparatively poor in Africa. I'd do OK, but not perfect, in Central and South America.

I like geography. I also took a course in it at college, though it focused more on weather issues, plate techtonics, mountains, and things like that. Global warming is real, and a serious issue!

If you are American, you most certainly should be able to. It would be embarrassing not to. Although, I met a college educated American who thought that Mexico is one of the states. And she didn’t know how many states are there. She wasn’t even embarrassed. I am naturalized American and I certainly can name US states.

I’m certainly not embarrassed. I have good self esteem and a stable sense of self. Stuff like that is just not important for me to know. Being good at my job and making and saving money is more important than silly trivial facts.

I was replying to OP. I haven't seen or read your posts.

Yes I believe people should know their own country (of course it is different if someone has limitations of sorts that make remembering things difficult). I don’t see knowing one’s country is silly and trivial or unimportant. But I understand that you consider knowing your own country unimportant, silly and trivial. To each its own

Im amazed that there are people who dont realize New Mexico is an American state. Like people who work in government, or post offices, or interstate commerce, like moving companies, who will tell you, sorry we only move in the continental states?

There is a website and or magazine dedicated to stories of people getting caught up in this that i find hilarious but tragic that it is STILL going on. A place i worked at in the mid 1980's had employees who didnt realize New Mexico was a state. I never imagined it could continue forever. Or that people would come up with "Old Mexico" as a real place.

Probably not, my memory is lousy and school was a very long time ago. But if someone says a name I know it's a state. I lived in New Mexico for a while, it shocks me that anyone would think its not a state. I've been to most of the continental states but only one of the original 13. We tended to go west for road trips. If I had the money I'd go live in New Mexico, best weather, hot but not offen humid.
