How do you feel social media impacts your mental health?

Ive been back and forth for a couple years now. I am very social but I find the social media medium to be triggering and stressful. I officially have zero social media accounts now and it feels so freeing.

I dont know that I have quit for good. I do know that I will be off for at least the summer. For myself personally I think social media has an overall negative impact. Triggering news stories, people shoving their self righteous opinions down everyone's throat and a lot of judgement. You know what they say, ignorance is bliss.

For me the best thing I ever did was to delete my social media accounts

I like the sharing of information, the networking—-but I loathe, absolutely hate the preference of many for quantity rather than quality of relationships. I think that contributes to rudeness and a “there will be another bus along in 2 minutes” attitude with a lack of responsibility to be courteous and discover that maybe if you took the time, the person would be an extremely valuable connection. The whole thing is sort of a speed dating approach to life. I actually read an article by a former president of Facebook who made that criticism. Sometimes its like life on crack cocaine-phew! However, I seem to be making most of my connections online so I’d better learn how I want to handle slowing down the warp speed to something I’m comfortable with. Thanks for this topic.

Because of my situation I was in I do not use Social Media at all and never will. I feel there are other ways to stay in contact with friends.

I regularly log out and temporarily deactivate my Facebook account whenever I need a break. It helps. Sometimes I’m gone for 15 hours. Sometimes for 8 days. Whatever I need to clear my head.

I tried deactivating. People seem to think it is okay to tease about deactivating even though for myself, it is about my mental wellbeing. It is also interesting how bold people become behind a computer when they are not like that in face to face contact. I find it al exhausting.

I find facebook depressing.

I originally got it because I heard that it had some good mental health groups on their, but apart from the fact that they were very judgemental and member bashing, the whole facebook atmosphere is just depressing.

all these people posting pictures and positive updates just made me feel so worthless and like I was nothing- so I deleted it

I've never even seen the good side of twitter, why would anyone want to join that

plus: it's not like I really had anyone to add to facebook.

I had a few people on their from some MI groups but that was it

and I felt pressured too to post a photo of myself on my profile.

having issues with my looks that was never going to happen, like ever

I dont know why but I am not bothered by social media. I only really use facebook. I have and instagram and follow some people on twitter but dont really use those. I never debate anything on facebook or fight. During election season I hide some people's posts so it wouldnt bother me. I am not friends with anyone on facebook that I havent met or wouldnt speak to IRL. So I think I have around 100 friends. I purge sometimes if I havent seen anything that connects me to people. I find facebook "surface" enjoyable. What I mean is that I know its not important to my life, I can do without it but sometimes there are goofy things I find funny or interesting. I belong to a group from my hometown and that one is the best. People get so pissy and wrapped up that sometimes I want to pop some popcorn and watch what goes on. I never post anything I wouldnt want the whole world to know and I know that the internet is forever. If its on facebook, that doesnt mean its true. I can understand why some people find it triggering. I know that some people like to present their lives as perfect or that they are influencers but I do not think anyone has a perfect life.

I only have Facebook and Instagram and I deactivate those two from time to time. It was so toxic before but I was able to minimize the damage it could cause to my mental health by unfollowing accounts that don't add value and happiness to my life. I tried unfollowing celebrities and influencers that may be the source of unhealthy lifestyle comparison.

Following content creators on Instagram is one of the best decision I made. I followed accounts that post arts and poetry. I enjoy discovering talent and it motivates me to do my own thing as well. Just sharing though.

For me....social media is how I keep in contact with friends I don't see often. It is also a wonderful place when I have a question to ask (especially about horse issues since my horse is now finally with me) my friends weigh in with what has worked for them. Also just my way of keeping in contact living alone & finding out what is going on in the community.

Also since I don't have a TV it keeps me current with what is going on in the world too. Read posts then I research facts. Works good for me.

I often find social media exhausting. I don’t like how some people become so bold and judgmental behind a computer screen, people who may not be that way face to face.
