I stumbled on some you tube channels last night devoted to living our of your car. As in, how to and also, it apparently is a lifestyle now. Similar to Tiny house living. I have to say, much to my surprise once the stigma was taken away, it made me oddly happy.
All of the people were pretty happy with their lifestyle and I tell you, made me happy to see that it could be an option. One lady I did feel bad for. She worked all her life and then a few months before she got her pension they laid her off. But she said when she first started doing it she found that she loved it. She loved the freedom, she loved not having to worry about money all the time (she gets $1000 in social security every month). But still it makes me angry that she has to be in this position. Some people do it by choice though. The like traveling around the country and they did it for a vacation or something and just found that they liked it. |

That is so so horrible about the woman who got laid off just before she was about to get her pension (and worked all her life!). I feel for her too. I don't know much about living out of a car, but I did see a video like that last year on Facebook. A woman living out of a van. She had a dog and was also a photographer. I don't feel I have it in me to do that. But good for them. To each their own.

I have done it. Below freezing and my car wouldn't keep running. I walked Walmart all night to have somewhere warm, until they made me leave for being suspicious. I showered at the gym. I couldn't do it again.

The theory is with these professional living out of your car people to keep moving based on the weather. But some did note if they miscalculate, such as going someplace too warm it can be miserable.

There are people that live in their cars, or, they live in a van. The problem they have is finding food, water, and public bathrooms. They are run out of a community if they are in a rural community or small rural towns. They mostly stay in urban cities, and move north and south during the summer and winter months. If your a woman, the police worry your going to be raped. If your a man, and your driving a van, they worry your going to take children and rape and kill them. For the community safety, the police runs them out of town. Out of sight out of mind. It is not really cheep living, as your being run out of town or run out of the state, your spending vast amounts of money on gas to travel. And the reason people live in their cars, because they do not have money. It is not uncommon that the little money they have, 50% to 75% of their money is spent on gas. NO, I do not see living in your car is positive. |

I could not live out of a car, just like I couldn't go camping
I need proper home comforts and proper electrical devices, plugged in, only touched by my hands so I know they are clean, and proper places to eat, read, watch tv, etc |

I would definitely have no problem living out of a camper van. I guess if as a worst case scenario, I could briefly live out of a car. I don't think that the latter would be totally necessary, though. I do think there would be a way to find a small room with access to a bathroom. But in the case of the camper van, if I set up shop near a public bathroom, I could potentially be sufficiently happy. Unlike my husband, I could live out of a backpack. I really don't mind simple living at all and am not materialistic. I am not like him in that I don't have any major things of sentimental value, beyond my wedding ring. I wouldn't mind living with just three changes of clothes for each cold weather and warm. I wouldn't fret much about wearing things from a thrift shop or charitable giveaway.

Coincidentally, I just read an article about a couple who got all excited about this life style because they thought it would be freeing, so they bought a van equipped with certain comforts and headed out to the Grand Canyon, where they plopped the van down on a property belonging to some friends. They lasted one night there, and then the husband stated that he couldn't possibly spend another night in the van and he was going to sleep in the house. They ran into various other problems too, trying to work from the van. Sometimes they couldn't transmit. Then they had to park their child somewhere while they were going to be gone.
So what with one thing and another, it didn't work out for them. They ended up selling the van. |

It is one of those things that really might not work for you at all. But I suppose I admire the ability of some people to made rainbows out of mud. For me, probably wouldn't work. When I was a kid a friend's family had a camper and I think we spent one night in it and I was done.

There's a subreddit called r/vandwellers. I love seeing how people have set things up but there are also a lot of posts from people who are forced to live in their cars after suddenly losing a home
I set my car up so that I can sleep in it. I love being able to drive somewhere and then just leave the next day without having to set up a tent and everything that goes in it. On the other hand, it makes me feel a little homeless and people walk near the car more easily than they would a tent! |
