I know retail workers hate it when customers return something without a receipt but the jacket I was returning was almost $90 and it didn’t fit. The guy wanted to give me the full price which was $160 but I told him I had paid for it half off. So I was honest and I got a gift card. But I felt kind of guilty even though keeping the jacket was just as stressful. But does anyone ever do this?

I don't try to return things without a receipt, but the last time I returned something WITH the receipt they gave me a very hard time because I didn't have the TAGS. Bringing the tags was something I'd never heard of before.

I always thought once the tags were cut off you couldn’t return it no matter what. I don’t know though.

Some items are not sold with tags, but I believe packaging should be present and receipt when possible.

I guess you're more up-to-date than me, Mountaindewed. I rarely shop in stores, and this happened a number of years ago, but even at the time it was quite new to me. I'll certainly remember to keep the tags on in the future - thanks for the heads-up!

I looked for about 20 minutes for the receipt but couldn’t find it. I keep all my receipts in a folder. It was bought online. I wouldn’t have bothered returning it if it wasn’t so expensive.

I don't think you did anything wrong.
One time I wore a jacket my mom bought for me at Walmart. I went back to Walmart to get something else and forgot to take the tags off. The employee at the door cornered me and was sure I had stolen the jacket because it still had the tags on, and it said "Walmart". I guess I could have fought, but I ended up giving it to her. |

Sorry if I sounded rude. I work in retail but I’m not a cashier so I don’t know what can and can’t be done. I didn’t even know you could return stuff without a receipt until about 1.5 years ago.

With Amazon, they have the record of your purchase online, so you can access it that way. And now you can take it to Kohls and they will return it for you

I bought a clock radio that was kinda expensive, but I used a coupon so I paid around $40. When I bought the item, the clerk informed me of the return policy for this item. She told me I had a full-year to return, which is longer than most items. It worked perfectly for the first few months, but when I unplugged it to move it to a different outlet, there was a spark and now it doesn't turn on on the first try anymore. I am very disappointed and am glad I am able to return. I am hoping to get another one if there is another one. If not, I will be disappointed.

I suppose as long as you don't feel guilty it would be okay.
I just don't have that kind of luck. Only once have I returned anything without a receipt and they gave me a gift card for only 25% of what I paid. The item of clothing had failed. They could have at least replaced it. I have an acquaintance who returns everything with and without receipts including items she has clearly used - like outfits she wore once to special occasions. She seems to return everything and no one seems to prevent her. She shops one week then returns the next. I think it is an addiction. |

You didn't sound rude at all, Mountaindewed. You were just telling me something I didn't know, for which I'm grateful.

Oh boy you are so nice. As a teen I always had people trying to return things to me without a receipt and pitching a fit that they got the sale price. Or that we couldn't give them cash.
There was a massive scam of people grabbing jeans from one isle and coming up to us and trying to "return" them without a receipt. |

I have the worst luck returning things. Very few things I return have been approved.
