I'm so excited. I got a call from my harp teacher this morning. She has a spot for me on Wed. afternoon, she just needs to confirm the time, later today.

I'm really excited to be going back to lessons, after a couple of years' hiatus. It gives me something positive to look forward to, and hold onto when I'm starting a depressive episode.

Can't wait to get started, except that means that I now need to tune my harp. That's going to be a challenge, it's so badly out of tune.

@HappyCrafter

I mostly play Celtic and Latin American with some contemporary stuff by a harpist I like thrown in for good measure.

That’s beautiful! The harp has such a mystique and alluring sound.

I have found so much relief in learning music and polishing my violin skills the last couple of years. I always wonder if it’s because of the emotions that are poured into the instrument 🤔.

Sounds like a lovely thing to be doing. Harps are amazing instruments. Is it hard to tune a harp? How hard is it on your finger tips?

Thanks everyone. Having lessons definitely provides motivation to practice, and I know it helps me emotionally.

The harp isn't super hard to tune, it just takes a lot of patience. My harp has 40 strings, making it on the large side for a celtic harp, and as I haven't been tuning it regularly recently it's badly out of tune. I'll have to tune it a couple of times a day, for about a week to 10 days, until it will hold, but even then it will need to be tweaked every couple of days. They're very sensative to changes in temperature and humidity.

They're a bit hard on the fingers, especially singe I have a high tension harp (string tension varies from harp to harp) and the bass strings are wire. It'll take a couple of weeks, but I'll build up calouses on my fingers again, and then it'll be fine.

Sounds wonderful. Wish we could hear you play (after you get yourself back in the swing of it) I always love the sound of the harp

Lovely instrument- angelic! I’ll bet there are a lot of professional opportunities for harpists in elegant restaurants, too.

Music is a very good outlet. Good luck with tuning the harp. I suppose that is one way to get used to playing it again. I thought all the strings were wire. I hope Hailey the cat appreciates the new sounds in the apartment.

@possum220

Originally - like way back 300 years ago, all harps were wire strung. There are now some makers who make traditional wire strung harps, and players who play wire, but the technique you use on a wire strung is very different than on a normal celtic harp.

Most harps, use one of or a combination of nylon, polycarbon flouride, gut, and wire in the base.

@HappyCrafter
Well my lesson didn't actually happen. When I got my harp out to tune it, it was so bad, that it won't be playable for about a week, and I don't want to try practicing on a harp that goes out of tune, every 15 min. So I talked with my teacher, and she agreed it made more sense for me to get the harp tuned, and then start lessons. So I'll start lessons next week.
