Now... I work with cops all day long... and at work, they suck up to me like no mans business... still dislike them.

But for a week now I have been hearing a low *boom, boom, boom,* all night long in my house. Like someone is playing their stereo loud in a car. Every night it comes on at 9 PM and is on all night. I have been using white noise to block it out. I finally called the cops last night -- non emergency line -- just to ask if something was going on -- like maybe a party for Halloween event or something. I know it is coming from outside because I have gotten in my car, gone down the street, turned the car off and listened -- and I can still hear it. But no I can't hear it at work or once I leave the neighborhood. It isn't a neighbor. It is outside.

As usual they just act crazy and came out here... (two squad cars) then I had go out and greet them. They called me. They said they couldn't hear anything and I told them they wouldn't be able to with their cars running.

Now this got them rude. This guy was SOOO rude. Once I "talked back" to him in anyway and wasn't eternally grateful for their coming out to help me (which I never asked for) they weren't going to hear anything. He turned the auto off for like one second and I got that look of "crazy woman" I got that nazi vibe and figured I better shut up before they hall me to the mental institution. Very rude.

Now you wouldn't mind but my town has ZERO crime. In fact in a famous incident a cop made up shoot out in my town because he smashed up his car and wanted to cover it up. So it is not like I am keeping them from anything.

Lesson learned. Weirdly this morning is the first time the boom seems off. I am hopeful that they have a buddy (union construction guy) or some such that has had his radio blaring at an all night work detail and after my complaint they pretended they didn't hear anything to me and then went and told him to turn it down.

From what you describe you don't sound rude or like you were "talking back." Unless there was a tone you used.

I'm sorry you had this experience. I hope you can get a good night's sleep soon.

Good luck. This does remind me of a noise I used to hear at nights when I lived out in the woods. It seemed more noticeable in winter and at night. I finally decided it probably came from some kind of farm machinery at a goat farm a couple of miles away and across the river (like something using a compressor or some kind of prosessing) or one of the few remaining mills (but I couldn't see them going all night anymore)---because it was consistent, I got used to it & after a while didn't even notice it. Cops generally are not good dealing with these non-emergency (well, I might hesitate to call in an emergency depending on what that emergency was...) you-have-to-actually-listen for a few minutes and problem solve.
I found the noise I heard difficult to place in more than a general direction & it did sound like it came from out of doors or inside a non-insulated thin-walled structure. I decided the season made a difference because of the loss of forest leaves etc.

Interesting. I do have a farm right behind me. I have like a square block of forest and on the other side of that the farm. One reason I thought maybe there was like hayrides going on there? Or a haunted house or something.

My only question though would be why haven't I heard it before in the 5 years I have lived here. I didn't notice it until last Friday. Once it is on as well it is constant while a heat pump or something typically isn't constant.

I mean it is loud enough to wake me from sleep (as it did Friday) and I can hear it over my tv. As I routinely leave my tv on at night and sleep with it on.

It is a mystery. I bought a noise machine but I don't want to spend the rest of my life doing that particularly when I bought next to conservation land in the middle of no place.

Being me, I would drive around to the farm whan I am hearing the noise & see if it is louder there or you see anything that could be making the noise.

I am blessed to know our head sheriff. I saw an unusual fluorescent light on in an old delapidated building on a neighboring farm & knew the owner had dementia. Called the sheriff to check it out. He actually called me back after investigating it & let me know that there was nothing going on inside the building. Lol....I pictured grow lights for pot.

Yeah, I have not had this problem so far in my new place, except Saturday night some kids were drinking and having a loud party. I called the security patrol and they were like insisting I tell them where it was coming from, and I was like, dude just come to the building and you will hear it. They weren't happy with that but about 10 minutes later it stopped for the night after going on for hours.

My old apartment complex never wanted to deal with noise complaints even when I couldn't hear my own tv because of it. It was a "luxury" complex and you bet your butt I was paying luxury rates. I finally was like, this is a damn luxury complex, I pay pretty damn high rent so go do your job. I don't like being like that but it certainly go them off their butts to deal with it. I hate when people like won't help you unless you actually turn into a jerk. I never want to have to be that way when asking for help. But I just got tired of paying super high rent and dealing with noise all the time. So glad I moved out of there.

Glad it stopped. Hopefully you won't hear it tonight.

Yeh I had a noisy neighbor problem at my last place. I did call the cops and they got caught red handed with their windows open at 2 AM blaring the TV. They soon moved out.

It did not go away last night. Again, amazing it always starts around 8 to 9 pm. I did get a noise machine however which I used last night. I am quite happy with that as it is small, rechargeable, and definitely lound enough to drown out the sound but allow me to hear the tv which I use to go to sleep. It also has a timer so it goes off after 90 minutes.

But I woke up around 2 am and could hear it. My last thoughts before falling asleep again were, maybe it is in my head, but this morning when I woke up at 6 AM... you can hear a pin drop. I guess I will just have to put up with it.

The suggestion to drive by the farm when you hear it is a good one. It could be a new piece of equipement....or it can remain a mystery.

I'm sorry you were treated so disrespectfully. I have not had great experiences with police officers, overall - especially when mental health crisis was occurring.

I did already. It wasn't significantly louder at the farm but I could hear it.. Nor could I see anything that really seemed like it was causing it. But last night we had terrible weather. Rain and strong winds and -- no noise. Now I know your thinking, are you sure you couldn't just not hear it because of the wind? I think no because the wind only came in gusts and then quieted down. I suspect whatever it is is someone doing work on the outside. I have two potential construction projects around the area, that I suspect is the issue.

That makes me happier as there will be an end to it eventually.

Most police agencies will send an officer out regardless if you request one to protect them from liability. The assumption being that you could be in harm and if they don’t send someone and you get hurt they could be sued for negligence. Or sometimes just as a general wellness check.

Sounds like the cops in my state. They are awful here.
