When we remodeled (well, actually, more like rebuilt) our nearly-100 yo house I put in two gas wall heaters which have kept us cozy in temps down to -10F. I did it deliberately because I didn't trust central heat, and I'm glad I didn't because we have had frequent power outages (usually some drunk or neophyte on a frozen street taking out a power pole) and central and space heaters are useless when that happens. But there hasn't been a natural gas outage in our neighborhood in 40 years -- I'm not counting the one time Atmos tore up our front yard, in the summer, to install all new gas lines. Having two units gives us a two-zone system, and we have a backup in case one fails, which it did once (replaced both with a better model) but we were still comfortable until the new one(s) were in place.

We had electric years ago in Dallas, and our 2br apartment bill frequently topped $250 in the winter; my parents 3-bedroom usually cost them over $440/month in the winter, $200 in the other seasons. This past February we finally finally hit $150 on a month where the lows were usually in the single digits and teens, and average for the year was $70. We use the gas for hot water and cooking, too.

My father's secret was to complain that everyone was leaving the backdoor open. Then he sort of regressed into complaining that the closet doors were open or we were spending too much time staring into the refrigerator, trying to find food that usually wasn't there.
