Right now, it is -8C feels like -15C/20F, feels like 7F. YIKES!!!!
Ok I live in a one bedroom all electric apartment and have recently had to start paying my own electric. New complex owners and they made changes. Anyway, in this day and age of very cool technology, I can go to the electric company's website and set up my account. That make me feel like a responsible adult! I enjoyed doing that! So, I can go every day and see how much electricity I use per day and what my projected bill is. Trying to be frugal, I kept my thermostat at 60ish, but it was too cold. So I googled best temp for cold weather, etc...and Google said 78 degrees! I would burn up in that. I have it on 66 I think or 68 and I am plenty warm. I have winter jammies on in layers, LOL, but my hands are warm. How do yawl manage your heat in the winter? __________________ "Love you. Take care of you. Be true to you. I'm fortunate enough to be living in a pretty nice apartment. I wasn't always. I used to have radiators in my older apartments, but the last two apartments (including my current apartment) has central or central-like heating, all electric!
I've heard of some people leaving their stoves on, which can be dangerous, so I wouldn't recommend that. Others purchase those fake fireplace electric heaters, which might be safe, but not sure. Others purchase small heaters, which may or may not be safe. Then you have to think about the animals and their safety around certain heating machines. Insulating windows helps. That you can purchase at a local hardware store or online. It's a film you put over your windows to keep the heat out (but you should remove it once it warms again in the Spring, so as to prevent mold/mildew). There's also those door snakes that also help keep the cold from coming in from under the doors. Hopefully these tips help. Stay warm! (((safe hugs))) |

We have gas central heating, but also to suppliment the cosy atmosphere of our main lounge we have an enamelled modern wood burning stove. The same will apply to our new home we are buying: the Georgian mansion situated a bit ouit of town, but the exception being its wood burning stove is early 19th century, and enamelled in pale blue which very attractive. Incidentally ether properties have gas stoves in the kitchen. I may be a lousy cook, but I love cooking on gas because we have more control.
Thank you for this topic, @HappyCrafter It's most interesting! |

Those of you who live in the frozen north are going to laugh at the idea of us dealing with cold in the Sunshine state, but we do.
I have electric heat in the house, plus a fireplace. I set the heat in the house around 68 to 70 when I'm home and wear layers to stay comfortable. I set the thermostat to 60 when I leave for work to conserve energy. I also have a space heater I use in the bathroom to warm it up more than the house. I use the fireplace for heat I keep the glass doors on it closed because I read a fireplace draws heat out of the house and up the chimney. HappyCrafter, 78 in the winter!?!? That sounds WAY too high. Why don't you experiment with temps in the mid to upper 60s and how that works for you? |

I’ve had the heat as high as 75 in winter...mostly because of temperature gradients. The thermostat is by the kitchen so if I cook that area of the condo gets hotter, plus there’s a big window door thing on the opposite side that lets in cold drafts....I do keep it at 78 in summer though.

Nothing is more homely than a pile of logs on the fire, but also a candle lit dinner. Even the warmth from the candles was comforting.

Yes, I am experimenting with it. Last night I set it at 64ish and I am comfortable, even though it is 20F out currently. Ya know, folks laugh when yawl in the south get your occasional colder weather, but if you aren't living in a place that has the tools to manage it, it easily becomes a big problem. Salt trucks and such are expensive and people have to be trained to drive them. Not to mention dealing with ice on roadways and bridges which always causes problems if drivers don't know how to drive in it. __________________ "Love you. Take care of you. Be true to you. HappyCrafter, what's really hard to cope with is the yoyoing the temps do. They are predicting 30 degree drop in the high from today to tomorrow. We don't get a chance to acclimate. Plus this is a subtropical environment. What are normal winter temps up north wreck havoc here. Winter freezes can devastate the farm crops. That means higher produce prices for the rest of the country. Not to mention as farmer can lose his year's income overnight.

I live in a cottage in the country I inherited from my Mom who passed away suddenly 8 years ago. It has needed some work since then and as for heating, it has an eco log solid fuel stove.

Electric. I have a heat pump.
Pros: - nothing is combustable so you never have to worry about carbon monoxide. - It has "emergency heat" so if the compressor dies you have a way to get heat. - It is rather cheap. Even in January my heat bill is only about $150. - It is both a heater and an AC so you have ac build in. Cons - when it gets really cold it can fail. Under 0 degrees is iffy because it takes the outside air and warms it up. - Is on all the time (how it is supposed to work) so that can bother some people. I also have a space heater I use to warm my bedroom up before going to sleep. This keeps me from getting a head cold. |

Thus far, I have needed to turn my heater on only in the early morning. Our temperatures have been in the high 70's to low 80's this month. We should be in the high 60's.
I also live in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment - which I like because the maintenance is low. My thermometer is screwy, so I just push the little lever until the heat comes on. My heat is gas. In my town we pay PG&E for both gas and electricity. PG&E is the corrupt and negligent corporation that has been responsible for causing most of the massive wildfires we had last year. The Californians who don't profoundly resent paying PG&E are few and far between. __________________ |

I know some people who cool their houses to 65 in the summer. That's crazy as far as I'm concerned. 65 means I need the heat! |

We have central heat and air. As I’m the only one in the group that stays hot (and would love to have it in the 60’s) and the other two stay cold, we keep it on 72 degrees year round. I have a fan running nearly all the time.
