Yes I did one by 23 and me, there’s not a ton of medical info unless you later run through promethease and use the SNPedia.....but the ancestry is fun.

Yeah, I did Ancestry. Knew I was Norwegian and German but found out the rest was British.

I'd like to try 23andme since there are genetic disorders that run on both sides of my family. Waardenburg syndrome dad and Tourettes mom. Plus the usual diabetes , hypertension. IDK if my major depression is genetic or not.

Ooh, how cool BethRags!

I did one through Ancestry, but downloaded the data (and then deleted it from their website, since I was a little paranoid!) and ran it through Promethease. Got tons and tons of interesting tidbits that way, although there's so much, it's a little hard to make sense of it all.

Promethease recently underwent some changes, so it's not as useful anymore (there's a bunch of medical stuff that they don't report anymore, such as which psych drugs you're not likely to respond to, plus they've been sold recently to a company with a history of data breaches. Just FYI.)

You can also download your data and load it up to Rhonda Patrick's site "Found My Fitness" for some interesting stuff that's a bit more curated, if you're interested in that kind of thing: FoundMyFitness Genetics – Genome Analysis Tool

Good luck! I hope you find it interesting!

I'm so glad to read each of your replies! Thanks for the link, guilloche.

It will be really fun for my son and I to compare our results (he bought a test for himself, too).

I have some paranoia issues about the test, but I'm darned if I'll allow them to stop me from doing the test, it means so much to my son - and I'm excited, too!

I see this is an old thread but my family and I did this 5 years ago. At the time it didn't have many features however we were "grandfathered in" at no extra cost as things got updated. Its worth the money and I hope they offer some genetic insight in terms of mental health soon.

It's not really an old thread because I haven't yet received my results

It will be a bright day when they can provide insight into mental health.

Hi G, does FoundMyFitness cost? I can't get past the initial screen.

My sister did the DNA test from Ancestry. I don't know all of the information it provided, but she did share with me the results on the origins of our ancestors and some detailed family tree info, photos, and more. I'm sure there could be slight differences in our results if such a test provided extra stuff (i.e. vulnerability to certain medical conditions, etc), but not much difference in background. We do share biological parents. The results were not surprising. We already knew a lot about some ancestors going back to the early 1700s. In other cases, we knew at least as far back as great great great grandparent(s). There were a couple things confirmed, such as my maternal grandfather's "aunt" was actually his older half-sister. Also, it always seemed curious that my father's paternal grandmother's maiden name was the same as her married name, though it is a very common name.

My most recent immigrant ancestor was my great great great grandfather on my maternal side. He was a famous horse jockey from Dublin, Ireland.

I knew one of my great grandmothers well (born 1898). She died when I was a teen. She was into genealogy and enjoyed talking about her ancestors. She created a family tree that she stashed in a very old family bible.

Yes, we just did Ancestry. It was no surprise our tests confirmed what our parents told us. My husband immediately got contacted by a cousin he didn’t know existed. The guy knew his grandparents names, so we knew he was legit. But now my husband is apprehensive about why his mother wasn’t in contact with that side of the family. She loved to correspond with the few family and friends they had. So he didn’t really encourage the new cousin much.

Yeah...I'm hoping no one contacts me. Definitely not what I'm interested in.

I was adopted and my wife got me an ancestry dna kit for my birthday a couple of years back.

I found a half sister which lead me to my birth mother. I found a cousin which lead me to my birth father. I did not contact either of them.

All I can see is my heritage, no one has a tree that allows me to see my ancestors.

A long time ago, I requested non-identifying information from the state of Virginia - where I was born and adopted. It had a crazy story about my birth parents and how I was in a convent as a baby for months before my birth father finally signed the papers releasing his parental obligation to me. They had to visit him several times and he even threatened to sue my bm for defamation of character.

Finding my half sister was a big shock because she also was adopted (and mixed racially). So my bm had 2 children up for adoption in her past. Now as I found (well my wife and sister have done all the research) that she has a huge happy (from what we can tell) now. I find it weird. My life was been fu**ed up. I had a hard time until about 5 years when I got well. Obviously living with a mental illness is hard enough, but I have an awesome doctor and now my wife's family who support and love me more than my "real" family.

Both my adoptive parents have passed. My mother passed when I was 4 from cancer. My dad remarried and my step family was very mean and favoritism ran rampant as I grew up. My father passed 11 years ago from a massive stroke on his 67th birthday. I was lucky to have worked at the same place as him for 6 years and we drove in and out of DC together every work day - 1 hour in 1 hour out. So I had massive amounts of time to spend with him.

I guess the dna test provided me with the answers I wanted - my birth parents and my geographical heritage. But I think it would actually have been better to be in the dark about my birth parents. I guess it is just a big jumble of sh**. Confusing and as with most information - more questions than answers.

Finding out my nationality is cool though. A few things I did not know about.
