My brother used to cook the Christmas day dinner after my mother passed away. He said he will not do it this year. My sister won't host us all because her house is almost a hoarding house. My house is very clean and neat, but small and my husband never wants me to have more than two or three guests at one time. We will likely go out for dinner on Christmas day. When my mother cooked, she usually made a turkey dinner because my maternal grandmother demanded it. When my brother cooked, the main course varied. My dad would pay for the food. It was sometimes a goose or standing beef rib roast. The Christmas after my mother died, 14 years ago, we went to a Chinese restaurant and had a nice feast there, with Beijing (Peking) duck, and other nice dishes.
Since marrying my Czech husband over 20 years ago, I make a special dinner for him on Christmas Eve. Or, if we go to Czech Republic, we have it there. Christmas Eve dinner is more significant in Czech Republic than Christmas day dinner. Czechs usually serve carp, with maybe carp soup, on Christmas Eve. Carp sucks, in most people's opinions, but it is tradition there. Sometimes Czechs will also make some pork schnitzel for those who refuse to eat carp. On Christmas day, my Czech mother-in-law usually made roasted chickens, but I think Czech Christmas day meals vary. When I make my husband the meal on Christmas Eve, sometimes I make the lousy carp and carp soup, but other times I make a delicious dish called Shrimp with Feta, which is sort of like a bouillabaisse type dish. I've also had lobster tails, some years. I also have crusty baguette, homemade Czech-style potato salad, and a fancy salad greens salad (usually one with spring greens, scallions, homemade candied almonds, Mandarin orange segments, and orange poppy seed vinaigrette). |

I’m not hosting but we may be having Salvadoran turkey sandwiches.....I’m hoping they decide to go for it. There is a special tomato and vegetable gravy that the turkey bastes in that goes on the sandwich and the a variety of toppings and high quality bread like a French bread.....

Well, my 'family' is just ridiculous, as my 11 year-old daughter just told me that I am a part of 'her' family, just 'not in person.' Whatever. Anyhow, I will be alone again, which is just fine with me. I will be making some New Zealand King Salmon, which is $30 a pound, but it's Christmas and I am just going to do it. Sides will be a corn souffle, roasted brussels sprouts with a balsamic glaze, garlic scalloped potatoes, a yummy homemade cranberry dish, Yorkshire pudding, and I am making a very non-traditional key lime pie for dessert. Should be fun.

I'll be solo for Christmas, but still like to cook something special. I'll roast a cornish hen and sweet potatoes, and some other green vegetable that I haven't figured out yet.
And I'll make shortbread cookies for desert. I have my grandma's recipe and making them reminds me of being a little kid baking with my Mom which is a nice memory. splitimage |

I'm not serving anything. Someone else is cooking. Woo! Guess who'll be doing those Christmas dishes out of the goodness of their heart though? In terms of what we'll be eating, there will be a ton of amazing food including cheesy potato casserole, roast beef, and...I'm blanking. A ton of sides.

My sisters family is coming up Christmas Day and I’m not sure where I’ll be eating for Christmas Dinner. I think there is talk about going to my cousins. At least I’m off work the 25,26 and 27.

I am a decent cook. If I have a good recipe, I can usually make it happen. But I only have one oven, so, have to figure some things out ahead of time... __________________ When I was a kid, my parents moved a lot, but I always found them--Rodney Dangerfield |

I am fixing ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans(with onion and bacon), stuffing(because dad has to have it) and a pizza or chicken kiev for my brother because he hates ham. Dad will bring rolls, homemade chocolate pie and whipped cream.

Just today changed dessert to Key Lime Cheesecake versus the Key Lime Pie I was going to make. The cheesecake will be more of a challenge to make.

So I finalized the menu: oven fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, mac n cheese, biscuits, roasted cauliflower, and if I have time, brownies.

Who else is doing prep work tonight? I just finished grating 3 blocks of cheese, and I set up the chicken to marinate in buttermilk and seasoning. I'm tired lol.

This Christmas went out to eat with family and do have wonderful memories of home cooked meals of traditional turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole which recently changed to roasted Brussel sprouts, and the traditional yams, fresh cranberries, baked salmonella or other fish for vegetarians in the family, pecan pie and/or pumpkin pie. Like the idea of other protein options such as chicken, fish, or beef and different desserts.

Bought the food from well-known UK high street shop this year, except for roast potatoes which were frozen. Had turkey breast and gammon joint (boneless) with honey glaze. Both were fine, very tasty. Veg were brussels sprouts, carrots and tenderstem broccoli. Made stuffing balls. Didn't bother with pigs in blankets or cauliflower cheese as only mother and me (she wanted something simple). Of course gravy. Pudding from same store, with single serving custard for mother (I can't stand it!).
Mother kept the leftover meat and veg. We split the pork pie. I had remaining prawns, smoked salmon and parma ham (result!!). The failures were few. This store's Christmas cake slices were awful, sickly sweet and no taste not even in the almond paste. The bag of turkey feast snacks weren't much good either. Crisps did taste of carrot and turkey (separately) but the sprout and bacon puffs were strange. Both off list for next year. |
