Hi Starkfull. I remember your post from a week or so ago. I do not live in Romania, nor do I know much about their mental healthcare systems. I did find the following article, which seems to paint a rather grim picture of the mental healthcare system there: Psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry in Romania I'm assuming this information is somewhat accurate, but I can't be sure. In another document at https://www.who.int/mental_health/ev...ofile.pdf?ua=1 , I read that most people with mental health issues in Romania are treated by the equivalent of general practitioners. The listed number of psychiatrists per 100 000 people also seems sadly low. I don't wish to seem like a pessimist about this, but one should be prepared for such a reality.

Wasn't your original inquiry for a friend? Is it possible that that friend reconsider going to Romania?

I think that mental healthcare services vary by European country. I think they vary even among former Communist countries. For example, I know that the number of inpatient beds in psychiatric hospitals are high in a country like Czech Republic. I know this because my husband is a native-born Czech and has done research on that, out of curiosity. Plus, his nephew was inpatient and my father-in-law was a psychiatrist. A couple of my husband's family members have quality therapy in CZ now, and like it, but it's likely that what is available in a country like Czech Republic, may not be available in Romania. Romania can't be compared to Czech Republic.

An idea that has come to me (not sure if it's already been mentioned) is for your friend to have online therapy. In this case, it might be possible for him/her to even be set up with an online therapist from another country. Of course I do not know the full details about that, or the prices, or any recommendations, but that may be worth exploring.

So you know, I have nothing against Romania. My very first love, with whom I lived with for three years in the US, was originally from Romania. He had an aunt and grandmother that stayed in Romania, while his parents took him to the US, and another aunt and uncle moved to Switzerland. I'm afraid that I've lost touch with that first love of mine, and am not even sure how much he'd know about his native country's healthcare system.
