I know a man who knew a man, who flew to the sun in a frying pan

it got too hot, and he couldn't settle

so he flew back home in a whistling kettle

(chorus)

it's a silly song, and you can sing along

bang to the music and the tune

get a kettle and a frying pan

and bang them with a wooden spoon

"Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
"To see a fine lady upon a white horse;
"Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
"And she shall have music wherever she goes."

bread and butter, cake and jam, for me, me, me

I had my bread and butter, I had my cake and jam

what is left for supper?

just wait and see

Mary had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb,
Mary had a little lamb
Whose fleece was white as snow.

And everywhere that Mary went,
Mary went, Mary went,
Everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go.

He followed her to school one day,
School one day, school one day,
He followed her to school one day
Which was against the rules.

It made the children laugh and play,
Laugh and play, laugh and play,
It made the children laugh and play,
To see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out,
Turned it out, turned it out,
And so the teacher turned it out,
But still it lingered near,

He waited patiently about,
Patiently about, patiently about,
He waited patiently about,
Till Mary did appear.

"Why does the lamb love Mary so?
Love Mary so? Love Mary so?
Why does the lamb love Mary so?"
The eager children cried.

"Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know,
Lamb, you know, lamb, you know,
Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know,"
The teacher did reply.

wasn't it based on a teacher's actual experience of a little girl bringing a lamb in to school?

I'm sure that's the story- it's actually a poem she wrote based on actual events

it's what I've been told anyway. sure wikipedia will correct me if I'm wrong

Nursery rhymes written for the poetry aspects are restricting a little more so than folk lore and fairy tales. I wouldn’t read into it too much. They are meant to be light and fun for children. If you wanna hear a real story read into the history of Cinderella

Wind on the Hill

by A. A. Milne

No one can tell me,
Nobody knows,
Where the wind comes from,
Where the wind goes.

It's flying from somewhere
As fast as it can,
I couldn't keep up with it,
Not if I ran.

But if I stopped holding
The string of my kite,
It would blow with the wind
For a day and a night.

And then when I found it,
Wherever it blew,
I should know that the wind
Had been going there too.

So then I could tell them
Where the wind goes...
But where the wind comes from
Nobody knows.

Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet
Eating her curds and whey
When along came a spider
And sat down beside her
And frightened Miss Muffet away

Hickory dicky dock
The mouse ran up the clock

The old farmer in the dell....
......and the cheese stands alone

"Nurse’s Song”

William Blake (1757 - 1827)

“WHEN the voices of children are heard on the green,
And laughing is heard on the hill,
My heart is at rest within my breast,
And everything else is still.

Then come home, my children, the sun is gone down,
And the dews of night arise;
Come, come, leave off play, and let us away
Till the morning appears in the skies.

No, no, let us play, for it is yet day,
And we cannot go to sleep;
Besides, in the sky the little birds fly,
And the hills are all cover’d with sheep.

Well, well, go and play till the light fades away,
And then go home to bed.’
The little ones leaped and shouted and laugh’d
And all the hills echoed.
