Yes, it's an interesting question. One I more or less wrestle with a lot.

I like to think that as long as I can hold onto some principles on this difficult journey, and as long as I can do a few things that show me I haven't given up, then, my mind is winning. To me.

I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean between logic (brain) and the heart / emotion (mind)?

It depends in what situation. Generally speaking you do need to use your mind and brain and logic when making any serious decision

@WovenGalaxy
@divine1966

I get the feeling jrae's question has to do with the struggle with mental health. The 'brain' being the sick part and the 'mind' being the persons part in it, the choices they make, etc.

But maybe it's best if @jrea will elaborate.

I think mind and brain kind of the same thing in this contest. Hope he or she clarifies

Well, I'm simplifying here, but in counseling and therapy you're encouraged to view your mental illness as just that, a 'mental illness'. It's not the 'real' you. It doesn't define you, they say.

I thought you would've know that? You've been in this site long enough.😁

I’ve no idea what is OP asking. They didn’t even specify if they are talking about mental illness or decision to buy a new car. I am not going to assume

Yes mental illness doesn’t define people, it’s just an illness. Yes I do know it. I don’t see where I said I didn’t. I don’t see where OP asks about that either. This is general social chat subforum so it could be about anything.

In your previous reply to me, you said 'brain and mind are the same thing' - meaning mental illness and person are the same thing. But they're not.

No it’s not what I meant. In addition mental illness was never mentioned neither by me nor by OP.

Mental illness was mentioned by me. It's a chat forum. But okay, it's not what you meant so I'll leave it there. Cheers.

My interpretation of this question would be that the "brain" is just the physical entity. The "mind" is the thought processes we go through to activate the brain.

The PHYSICAL brain can have chemical imbalances, tumors, anurisms, etc. that can have an influence on the way our thoughts & actions function...but we still can override the physical with our thought processes (most of the time)

It can be a battle depending on the physical condition but unless an extreme problem I think our thinking is what is in control.

This may NOT be what the OP was implying with the question but this is my interpretation based on what I have learned about the brain

My understanding is that the physical "brain" feels the emotion.....what we do with that emotion & how we respond to it is controlled by our thought process in the mind. Mindfulness is about acknowledging the emotion we feel & thinking through it with our logical mind taking into consideration the emotions & coming up with the best response. This is basically the way my psychologist explained how our minds work in relation to the physical functioning of the brain

The brain is physical, but the mind is emotional and mental. Technically they are one and the same thing.
I prefer the mind because it encourages us to open doors and close doors in our lives.

The brain tries to tell the mind what to do, the mind, however, likes to do as it pleases.

so, which part would be natural reaction, or gut feeling? the mind? The brain isn't technically a muscle but it does work like a muscle - and may respond, at times, like "muscle memory". So the more we practice a mindful act, the stronger our brain gets.

Interesting! I agree that the brain works like a muscle and I like your example.

I also think the brain / mind takes the form of what it rests on. Basically, what we focus on grows. If we're focused on something negative, that's what we see. If we are focused on the positive side of that same thing, our mood improves and we feel relief. I need to take my own wisdom here and use it more!
