My best friend has an illness and is likely to die within the year and I really don't know how to deal with it. She doesn't like talking about it and hasn't brought it up with our other friends either. She's the only person I'm really close to, so I'm worried that if or when it does happen I'm going to take it very badly. If anyone has any tips or anything about how I can cope better I'd really appreciate it.

Hello stardusterr: I see this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to Psych Central.

Here's a link to an article by our host Dr. John Grohol, Psy.D., from Psych Central's archives, on the subject of coping with grief & loss. The article provides links to a number of additional articles on the subject:

Coping with Grief | Psych Central

I hope you find PC to be of benefit.

I'm very sorry for what is happening to your friend. Acknowledged how you feel about losing your friend. Treasure every moment you have with her. Tell here every things you wanted to say to her as if she had already pass away.

I agree. Tell her how much she means to you, and say the things you want to say before it's too late.

Be there for her when and if she wants to say something. Chances are she will say something. Tell her what you want you need to so there are no regrets for you. Good friends are so hard to come by.
