I’ve been taking the bull by the horns. Time for big changes - one mouse click at a time.
Task Management Apps help you organize goals and notice mental roadblocks (1) I found a really good free task management program called “To Do List” here : ToDoList ©*AbstractSpoon Software - Home You might prefer some other program (there are a ton of them out there - I suggest doing a web search for "to do list software" or "task management software", etc.) but I’ve used this one before and it fits my needs. I find these programs useful, because they help you think through not only what you want to get done, but HOW to organize it. (2) I’ve started using the “Comments” window available for every task as a kind of psychology journal. For example, when setting goals I might recognize that I am hesitating because I feel unusually uncomfortable about something – a moment of low self confidence, weak self esteem, social anxiety, excessive worry, a discouraged attitude (depressed thinking, in fact), etc. Recognizing this I can write a note about it, and assign myself an appropriate self-help goal right in the tasks list. The program makes it easy to enter a goal, assign tasks to it, and put a due date and time on it. It is helping me be more accountable to myself. You can turn self-help into a game There's another kind of to do list software available - those that help "gamify" goal setting and goal getting. I found an interesting article on it here. These kinds of applications keep you on track with various goals by turning the process into a game, using current research in game theory, behavioral economics, social psychology and motivation. Here are some links to the most popular "gamification" goal planners I am aware of: Epic Win Forest Habitica Productivity Challenge Timer Superbetter All of these apps are reviewed in the gamification article. Hopefully this approach may be another good tool in the box! |
