I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago. I went through a mastectomy, reconstruction, and chemotherapy. Treatment lasted a year. I've been cancer free for 2 years. At my last follow-up mammogram they found an abnormality on my remaining breast. I go for further diagnostics next week. It's not exactly that I'm nervous, but the thought of having to go through treatment all over again on my remaining side makes me not want to go next week. I just don't want to go through this again.

I’m sorry they found something abnormal. My mom is getting rads after chemo and a double mastectomy....we both have the brca 2 mutation so while I can’t entirely relate I do feel your nervousness.

I'm so sorry you had to go thru all that and I truly hope further testing shows no breast cancer in your remaining breast. I got an unnerving call this afternoon.. Earlier in the week I had a routine mammogram. Now I need to have further testing on one of my breasts. My friend said this happened to her and everything turned out ok so I'm trying to stay calm. I just don't think I could deal with breast cancer on top of my mental illness. Of course if it is cancer to me it makes a difference whether it's stage 1 or stage 2. Those have a more positive outcome. I watched my partner who was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer go thru 3 1/2 years of hell. Cancer also runs in my family - out of the 5 of us in my nuclear family 3 passed from cancer. You were very brave to cope with going thru a year of treatment. All my best to you.

Are they repeating your scan with a diagnostic? Have you talked to the radiologist? He/she should be the one to tell you if you have to proceed to a biopsy. Most biopsy results are benign. My best advice, take it one test at a time and slowly digest the medical information. The "what iffs" can make you totally nuts.

I was assigned to a breast cancer nurse after I was diagnosed. She was my go-to person for questions that I wasn't sure I should ask my surgeon and oncologist. I don't like asking questions of physicians. I have, however, gotten better at it. My support nurse was amazing. Even if you are diagnosed, you won't be alone. For example, my psychiatrist did an awesome job advocating for me. I was so traumatized by the whole experience he made sure my PTSD and bipolar 1 disorder were treated appropriately along with my cancer during all my hospitalizations and chemotherapy. I don't have family and I live alone. The cancer treatment could have been horrendous going through so isolated. My treatment team made sure that didn't happen.

Thank you for your support Sheltie'smom. I'm glad you had such good support from professionals. I too live alone except for my feline family of 2. I will keep in touch and try like you say take it one thing at a time.
