For weeks now I have been having intermittent nausea. But I never throw up. I went to the doctor and had a whole bunch of blood tests and all was 100% normal. The doc examined my stomach area for a hernia or any abnormalities and didn't feel any.

The doc said if it kept happening we could do some tests like barium swallow or endoscopy. But I can't bring myself to do that - just yet. In my life I have had a zillion tests that never turn out to be anything. I did just have a barium test in 2010 and all was well.

I have narrowed it down to being sick mostly during the night. I tend to wake up at 1 am feeling ill or wake up in the morning feeling ill. And no I am not pregnant. I also feel that the nausea is 100% not related to what I eat.

My best guess is that it is related to gas in the stomach. That I am taking in a lot of air while sleeping during the night and that causes the stomach to feel full.

I feel
1. In the last few months I have gained about 10 lbs. I have been eating a lot. It seems like that 10 lbs was added on top of my stomach so it does feel like a rock on it.

2. I have been trying to increase my metabolism and in fact did increase my heart rate. Usually heart rate and respiration do go together so it is possible that I am taking in more air via the mouth during the night.

3. I feel like from 2006 until now I have been on a diet at least once per year. This tended to keep my stomach shrunk and my heart rate on the lower side.

4. Historically I have had stomach issues etc. ONLY when I am eating a lot and when I reduced my calories pretty much any stomach issues stop.

But one thing that also confuses me is that I am insanely tired. I can hardly make it to work all day. I get home at 8 PM and go right to bed. My theory on that is that the stress from feeling nauseous a lot is causing me to be tired.

Has anyone else had anything like this?

Emily Fox, I wanted to respond to this because I've had something similar going on for the last year and a half or so. My whole system just feels "upset", or "wrong". Not like itself. I've been back and forth with doctors but not been diagnosed with anything specific. Trying different things to calm it down, but can't say anything specific has worked. My doctor suggested it could be lactose intolerance, which can develop at any age (oh joy) and can produce some of the symptoms you describe.

Also, since you've said you believe you're going through the change, I wonder if the hormonal ups and downs might be affecting your GI system.

Also -- how in the world have you managed to increase your metabolism? I've been trying to do that for awhile now as the pounds creep up on me, but without much success.

Wishing you well and hoping you'll be feeling better.

Previously my metabolism was suppressed from years of dieting almost all the time and a liquid diet in 2012. So it was just a matter of eating more consistently for a long period of time. Of course, if you eat too much you will gain, which I did. Drat. But my BMR is registering higher than ever (and I had it tested).

Thanks for your thoughts, perhaps it is menopause but why is it just coming up now? When all the hormonal changes in the past 10 years have done nothing? I have been eating ice cream but not ever day... for the past week I just tried to eat mostly bread to keep the stomach from having issues.

Today I went out and bought "gas-x" I remember back in 2006 when I would try to diet i would always need to take gas-x as the gas would build up when I would cut calories.. but I never needed that after I had been on a diet rather consistently in 2006 to 2018... eventually the body would adjust. I actually think your stomach shrinks after about 3 weeks of reducing calories and this causes less action (churning) in the stomach?

I also bought some ginger tea and probiotics.

tx.

Have you considered GERD, gastroesophageal reflux? I've struggled with undefinable nausea for months in a stressful phase of life. Turns out GERD was the culprit. As far as I know, nausea is an atypical symptom, so it might not be on your radar.

Oh, and ginger actually helped with short-term relief!

Ha! Gas-Ex is one of the staples of my existence, as are Pepto-Bismol and Mylanta. Let's hear it for Gas-Ex.

Possibly but I don't have any of the classic symptoms -- heart burn etc.

I absolutely think it is connected to recent weight gain in the stomach.

Gallstones will make you feel nauseated. Are you now eating fatty foods? Gallstones may form when you diet, but you dont feel ill until later, when you eat fatty foods again. Thats what happened to me. The only thing that makes me feel better is Tagamet or the generic for it, cimetidine. I would feel very hot and sickly. I didnt not have gall bladder surgery, i just refrain from eating fatty foods.

Good point. I will cut back on the fat. Tx. But not sure because I don't have any of the classic symptoms ... like pain in the right side or vomiting.

Oh thank god guys. I got my period today, after 9 months of not having one.

Though the nausea has been going on for a month, it was only the last two weeks things were getting bad. Classic PMS symptoms for me are indigestion, bloating, and being exahusted. That was something that was scaring me because I could hardly stay awake. But that is super common before my period.

Even if it doesn't explain everything it explains a lot.

Many things might be going on. One possibility is a silent migraine where you experience one of migraine's symptoms - nausea is a very frequent symptom, but without pain. Silent Migraines: Symptoms, Causes, Tests, and Treatments
