I'm waiting to see if I am approved for a gastric bypass. I need one because of reflux issues and a malfunctioning stomach. However, as the doc says, I am 70 pounds overweight, anyway, so I qualify in that regard, too.

Anyone had experience with this process? Your thoughts? Thanks.

@Travelinglady
I am very passionate about gastric bypass. I had mine in 2009. I had the roux-n-y procedure. I know that the sleeve is very popular now but I know that the sleeve can be stretched and I figured I only wanted to have it done once.

With the procedure I had they not only make the stomach smaller, they have to remove some of the small intestines and "re-route" them to the "new" stomach. I lost all but 15lbs of the excess weight- I think it was about 127lbs. I was 300 the day of my surgery.
When I had it done, insurance companies were not as willing to cover it. So I had to go to the doctor once a month for 6 months. I had to get psychological clearance and see their nutritionist. Before the surgery I had to lose 15lbs. Many people are confused by this and think that if they could lost the 15lbe then they wouldnt need surgery. The physical reasons behind this has to do with your liver. I forget why but losing a small amount of weight right before your surgery is supposed to take the stress off the liver.

When I had it I had to sign a million papers. One of them was a promise to take certain vitamins because the surgery affects your nutrient absorption. This is extremely important to do. You will risk complications if you dont.

The surgery is a tool and eating clean will be a must or you will gain the weight back. Even though you wont be able to eat a lot, if you eat the wrong foods you will gain the weight back. I know 5 women who had the surgery and all of them gained the weight back plus some. One of them even had a revision and still gained it back. I believe I have kept the weight off for 10 years because I followed directions.

You will process sugar differently. Certain kinds of sugar can give me the sweats and heart palpitations. I can get sick or throw up. This does not happen with pure sugar but any kind of artifical sugar, corn syrup and artifical fats will do this to me.
You will process meds differently. I have to take multiple smaller doses of my meds because I have become a fast metabolizer so taking a large dose once a day is useless.
You will also process alcohol differently.
I became an alcoholic. I do not mean Gbypass caused me to be one; I have the gene and an addictive personality but because of how fast you process alcohol, if you want to maintain that fun feeling you have to drink more and more which can make you physically addicted. I know 3 women who became alcoholics post surgery.

Personally I think you should not have alcohol at all.
NO NSAIDS! You have to protect you tiny stomach and NSAIDS are known to cause ulcers and stomach issues so I was told not to take them and to always have them listed as an allergy.
Exercise is key. I know people that lost a lot and then stopped losing because they stopped moving. You will lose a ton the first year but you really do not settle into your ideal weight until year two. There will be excess skin but how much and where depends. Mine is all in the belly and I went for a consult with a plastic surgeon and he estimates that I could have 10-15 lbs of skin. It doesnt look bad though because i believe I had youth on my side and I am very active. I am 44 now.

I am sure i will think of other stuff but feel free to pm with me. I love supporting women going through this process!
