I have absolutely nobody who can pick me up and take me to and from my colonoscopy. Does anyone know if there is some kind of paid service that can do this for me?

Maybe a place that does like home care? You know, provides people to just sit in a house with like an elderly person while they sleep. Only they would accompany you to your procedure, in like an Uber or a taxi.

I think thats what i may have to do someday. I interviewed at such a place a few years ago for a part time job. Unskilled.

I think this would depend on where you live. Where I live there are services like this that are available. But I live in a large metropolitan area. One thing you might do is to contact any senior citizens' organizations in your area. Even if you're not actually a senior yourself, they may know of services such as this that would be available. They may even have senior volunteers who would be willing to provide such a ride. Best wishes for a good outcome with this. (I've had 2 of them & I'm overdue for a 3rd.)

When I lived in Austin Texas there were services and part of my Medicare advantage plan had rides to and from medical appointments. What I don't understand is why they wouldn't left me take a cab!

You can do this test now by mail. I have the box of supplies waiting for me to do it. Get yr dr to order it. The doc might not ok it if you ever had polyps. If not insist!

Thats true - if you are low riskish, they will let you do a home test, where you basically take a plastic cocktail toothpick and poke your poop. Its still gross!!! i mailed mine in last year right at the post office, but this year my dr told me to take the sample in the morning and bring it with me to my appointment - the lab is in the same building as my dr - so its fresh!

Eta - im sorry! But given the subject, my mind just went there! My dr and i do laugh a lot!

If you find out let me know as I am in the same boat next year. One thing someone suggested if you are up for it is NOT having anesthesia. Some people have said it is a breeze some people have said it is a nightmare.

If you wanted to do that you wouldn't need to have someone pick you up.

Another thing someone suggested is asking someone at work, because that person can take medical leave that day and won't be with you all day they get something out of it.

Another thing someone suggested is asking your doctor what they suggest.

I did it twice in the last 15 years. In the first time, I did it without anesthesia, while in the second time it was with partial anesthesia. I don't remember it was painful the first time. The second time they insisted to bring someone, and I didn't know anyone, so I told a neighbor, and he came at the end of the procedure. I don't know if he expected money, but I invited him to lunch at a restaurant as a thank you. You will feel dizzy for a good 15-30 minutes after the procedure if you go for it with partial anesthesia. They usually will make you rest in a bed for 15-30 minutes, at least that's what they did with me the second time. I felt OK after 30 minutes, and I think I could have gone home alone in a taxi. Now I need to do upper endoscopy, and the doctor asked me again to bring someone with me because it will be done with partial anesthesia, but I still don't know anyone who would sacrifice their time and come with me as a favor. I don't know about these services, but I think I will cancel this one. If they allowed me to do it alone, I would do it.

The vast majority of people are not truly under anesthesia, Versed is generally used as it puts a person in a “ twilight “ state. But legally they do need someone to drive you home.

A taxi or Uber can be used.

I've been thinking the same thing. My doc is going to ask me to get scoped again, but I don't have a ride. The test that you mail in does not find 100% of polyps and if you have one you still have to get scoped to remove it.

Some places have medical companion services. I have googled it and see a companion care website near me. Guess I will have to find someone there. They charge $ 15-20 an hour.

My concern on some of these medical companion services is that they are not all what they are cracked up to be. We had a few for my dad when he had dementia and I swear to god they could have cared less about him if he was rat.

I don't know if i can put my life in a total stranger's ( and a total stranger that could care less ) hands.

In this case it's just a 10 minute car ride. Plus the time it takes to scope me. My life won't exactly be in the person's hands.

check with your colonoscopy clinic. in my state there is a 'medicab' service and the colonoscopy clinic has used them so i felt safe using the service. basically it was just a regular taxi but the driver walked me from the clinic to his car and made sure i got into my home safely. (i felt ok so i only had him escort me to my building's elevator) it only cost an extra $5 on top of the taxi fare.

I googled reviews of care.com and they are terrible. They keep billing your credit card even after you have cancelled. Maybe I will call my local VNA - visiting Nurse Association and see if they know people.
