I was at the ER again last night. I have a history of kidney stones, but other than stones, before October I never had a problem with my kidneys. Stones are painful and irritating (to put it mildly), but usually don't cause major problems. I've had to have a minor surgical procedure to remove/ break up stones, but that's it other than the pain (agonizing) ands irritation.
In September I felt what I thought was another kidney stone. I mentioned it to my husband, but didn't go to the DR, because generally (unless it's too big to pass or causing an obstruction) all they can do is give me pain meds to help with the pain of passing it. I continued to feel worse, eventually getting fever (104.6 at its highest), nausea, horrible pain like I've never experienced before in my life (and I've broken my back, so I have dealt with pain in my life).. etc... In October, I finally convinced my husband that I needed to go to the ER right away. I went, and I was diagnosed with pyleonephritis(severe kidney infection), hydronephrosis (swollen, blocked kidney), and sepsis. My white blood cell count was 23.8. It turns out, I had a severe kidney infection that turned septic and poisoned my system. My organs were shutting down. I nearly died. The doctors told neae that had I not gotten treatment when I did, I probably would've been comatose within 2 days. While I was impatient, the urologist drained my kidney and placed a stent. I was sent home after being inpatient for nearly a month. My infection stayed the same after discharge, however, so within a week I was impatient again. This time I stayed for eight days. I returned home infection free, but still in great pain. After nearly a month, I was put inpatient again, this time to control the pain and remove the stent placed in October. Once the stent was removed I was pain free relatively quickly (within 1-2 days). I stayed pain free for nearly a month. Until Saturday. I thought I had a stone again. I went to the ER again last night. The is no evidence of a stone or infection (thank goodness), but the CT scan shows terrible kidney damage and scar tissue as a result of the infection that almost killed me. Now for some reason, this kidney is acting up again! I'm so frustrated ! I'm so done with the pain! Yes, they did give me pain medication, which will have to suffice until I can see the urologist for further testing, but FFS, I'm tired of hurting and having to take the pain medication. (If I don't take the medication, I can't focus on anything but the pain, plus I have to dream with nausea and vomiting when the pain is to bad). I almost wish they'd just remove the kidney already! I apologize for this being such a long read. If you've gotten this far, thank you for reading. |

Thanks for sharing your pain. I've had one kidney stone in my life (just a couple of years ago or so) that ultimately dissolved on its own. But even from that one experience I do know how painful kidney stones can be. And you've had it much worse than I did. Hope you begin to feel better soon.

I am so sorry for all this, Princess. We were always taught in medical school that the single most painful thing in all of medicine is a kidney stone. I hope you get to see that urologist soon!!

Thank you all for your support. I was back in the ER again last night with terrible pain. This time the doctor repeated the urine test from the 29th and also ordered an ultrasound.
My urine test came back clean, but the ultrasound technician couldn't pick up the "urine jets". The doctor said the when urine empties into your bladder, it comes in little jet sprays. One side is showing the"urine jets", but the jets aren't showing up on the other side. She said that typically, that means there is blockage somewhere. She got my pain under control and after consulting with the on-call urologist, sent me home with more pain medication ands a list of things to watch for. I see the urologist on Monday. I hope he can quickly figure out what's blocked and hope to fix it. I'm so tired of this. |
