Has anyone heard that on the news? There’s a big lawsuit going on. For the past month or so I’ve been using gold bond powder when I get out of the shower. For a week now I’ve had cramps, stomach pain, terrible heartburn that Pepcid doesn’t take care of, and now I’m starting to lose my appetite. I’m freaking out about ovarian cancer. I see my doctor on Wednesday but does anyone have any suggestions?

There was a brief report, on one of our local news programs just a few days ago, that talked about a study that concluded there is no link between the use of talc (which is, I believe, the ingredient in powders that has been of concern) & cancer. I don't know anything more about it than that. I use Caldesene powder. It contains cornstarch & zinc oxide.

The active ingredient of Original Strength Gold Bond Powder is Menthol. Inactive ingredients include talc and zinc oxide. You literally have nothing to worry about. You can't get ovarian cancer after using Gold Bond powder for one month. If it concerns you, stop using powder after you shower, and switch to moisturizer instead that is free of dyes and preservatives.
What’s in This?: Gold Bond Body Powder Talc | FDA Talc: What it is and How it is Used in Cosmetics Talc is a naturally occurring mineral, mined from the earth, composed of magnesium, silicon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Chemically, talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate with a chemical formula of Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. Quote:

Cancer doesn't develop that fast. And the powder you are using isn't the culprit.

The talc lawsuits have been going on for a number of years.
Anyway, the women affected were using talc for 20+ years. Like others said, using talc for a short time definitely won't hurt you. If you're uncomfortable with using talc, though, switch over to a cornstarch based product, like Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder. __________________ |

My grandmother died 18 days after I married which will be 25 years in september. She is of the era where you would sprinkle shower to shower in your underwear and under all body parts. In the summer heat she would sprinkle baby powder on the sheets to help feel comfortable. She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in her 70's which was unheard of then. She was one of the people who probably got cancer from talc. She has been dead too long for anyone in our family to pursue these claims but that is what the lawsuits stem from. Women born in the 20's-50's that end up with late life diagnosis's of Ovarian Cancer.

As others say 1 month use would not be likely to cause cancer.
I know 20 years ago as expectant mothers we were advised not to use baby powder. This was because of risk of inhalation and breathing problems including mesothelioma. This was not just talc but cornstarch based products. It made sense, as the dust particles get in the air. I would say it's good to avoid. And be very careful what you use 'below' as it can upset the delicate PH balance. Water and plain soap only. |

Thanks everyone. I think somethings going on just not sure what. Last night I had such bad cramps they were almost ER type cramps but they went away a few minutes later. Now my stomach kind of hurts. I’m on birth control but I shouldn’t be getting my period for 1.5 more months. I’m on the 4 periods a year birth control.

I was going to suggest you have ovarian cysts. I do and the pain you describe fits my ovarian cysts exactly. I have them on my right ovary and right before my period or sometimes between periods, I will get severe cramping, bloating, belching, nausea, my lower right back hurts or my right side hurts with a stabbing sensation. Ovarian cysts can also contribute to constipation based on how large they are, b/c they can cause a kink in your lower or upper intestine that food travels down to the colon from.
I refuse to have the surgery because I'd lose an ovary and while I'm nearly 50, I want to keep both of my ovaries. So, I put up with the pain from my ovarian cysts. I use Advil, a heating pad, chicken soup broth, a warm bath, Pepto Bismol and put up with the pain that can linger for up to 3 days at a time. The cysts get triggered by hormonal changes, or physical movement, diet too. I probably will consult with a gyno again about having them removed but even recovery from that surgery is iffy. |

My powder does have talc as the first ingredient. I guess I’ll have to switch to something else.
