This is a medical issue but you guys are a wealth of medical knowledge so ....

My husband.

In the last few weeks and again today.

He will be in his recliner and just lean back to recline and gets a horrible “ muscle crap/spasm/sharp pain on his right or left side .. think groin area but about 10/12 inches right above. My husband has a huge pain tolerance but he yells out in pain and pants, pain is severe and is lasting about approximately 3-4 mins then gradually eases to just an sore ache, he gets slight help drawing that side leg up.

Today’s hit him out of the blue sitting at his desk , straight up , no bending or reaching. This has happened twice on right side and now twice on left side.

He’s on prescription strength potassium and his last blood tests showed normal range

He has no fever, appetite is normal, no new foods, no nausea

I can’t feel any mass.. once the major pain passes he’s sore but no major rebound pain.

I don’t feel a hernia anywhere, he’s had hernia repair in the past low abdominal area and he said pain is totally different.

Bowel sounds are normal with regular BM ‘s it’s not bloating or gas.

No pain with urination , it’s clear. No pain in kidney area.

His pulse usually spikes to 180 -190 during the worst of the pain then drops back into the 80’s denies chest pain.

Our sodium intake is basically the same, we seldom ever use salt on anything.

So am I missing anything ?? I told him last night that if it continues I insist he go see our Doctor....

Ideas?

Thanks!

Pain can likely increase blood pressure and pulse rate. Probably see his primary doc who can suggest possible specialists to see. Good luck and hope he gets well soon.

You have given a good assessment of the situation.
That is a rapid heart rate. He must be in considerable pain during those 3-4 minutes...
How long has this been going on? (I just reread...few weeks. not good).
since it is going on both sides...I really don't know what to think. Gas bubbles can be excruciating.

Does he have any pain meds that he can take?
I think a visit to his MD ....or at least talk to his nurse...so he can be seen.

I am sorry he is suffering.

4 times so far of intermittent, acute, short-lasting pain "in the last few weeks" suggests it is not going away. The pain sounds severe, especially in someone with a high pain threshold. Sounds like having a doctor check it out might be good.

Best Wishes!

No he has no pain meds we have tried Tylenol after the first time for a couple days but he said he didn’t think it helped , we tried Advil the next time same, no real help.

If it happens again I will defiantly insist he see our Doctor

Thanks Bizi

Well yes his pulse and BP are elevated when this happens but quickly drops back to normal once it eases

Thanks

Yeah epigastric pain is possible and covers basically every organ. There’s no radiating pain around the back say for like GallBladder, there’s no pain radiating up into chest area or upper back area. he reports it’s more like a Charlie horse type pain.. he has no rebound pain response.. said it feels truly muscular.

It’s actually in the same area both sides.

Thanks !!!! Leave it to my husband to have some odd weird shyt lol

Do not pass Go, do not collect $200---take him to the doctor today. It's already gone on too long. (Typical man, I presume, he doesn't like to go to doctors.) I have absolutely no idea what's going on, but I know he needs to be seen like a week ago. Please keep us posted as to what the doctor says. Good luck!

Me, too. Good luck!

When I get a muscle cramp, I wet a cloth and put it over the part that's spasming.

It creates a plunge in temperature, and instant relief. Might be worth trying, to establish if it is a localised muscular issue.

My sertraline (anti depressant) causes the cramps.

I hope a doc will quickly get to the bottom of your husband's "attacks", of sorts. They sound awful and maybe even dangerous. Hugs

Did your husband get mesh when he had the hernia? My friend had to have mesh removed. I has been proven to cause problems. I would ask the doctor about that when you see him/her. Sorry your husband is having these problems.

The location of his pain concerns me because a GI doc I spoke with some years ago told me that pain in the center of the stomach is usually not serious, whereas pain on the right or left side of the stomach can be something more serious.

I'll add my vote for your husband to see the doctor. Keep us posted.

I am greatly saddened, and angered, by the fact that your state does not offer additional health care benefits to people in need of benefits, the underinsured. Your state is also without some of the "financial aid" options for seriously /urgently needed health care, as well.

I know this plays into whether or not some groups of people can afford to see a doctor. Many forgo necessary care.

I hope you and Steve will go, if you haven't already. I am very sorry for all of the extreme emotional and the financial stress this puts on you both.

Thoughts and Prayers ~
Much Love

I got a similar pain this weekend. I ate a rotisserie chicken on thursday (like all day, no sides), and i didnt poop until sunday. I think it was saturday, i thought i had either appendicitis or an attack of endometriosis, i had a very hot and painful right side under my panni. I took a nap. I felt like a different person after i pooped the next day. I wasnt even particularly constipated (in terms of hardness or difficulty, pardon the TMI!), it was just taking its time, and there hadnt been much fiber. I drank a lot of tea, which isnt usually my first choice.

Now that i think about it, my mother used to make fried italian greens sandwiches for her hairdresser to relieve his pains from time to time.
