The Carnivore Diet for Mental Health? | Psychology Today
This Dr. Georgia Ede MD is very convincing (I first saw her on You Tube) that a diet of meat only, yes you heard that right, has amazing positive changes for mental health. I am not convinced yet because basically there are no studies on this and after a lifetime of NOT eating meat that much, I am not sure I will be able to handle it. However, incidentally I happen to know that too many carbs has been known to cause me anxiety problems (and perhaps things I am not known of). The first time I encountered this was trying a vegetarian diet and realized almost immediately I was on the verge of a panic attack, something I hadn't had in 20 years. Also, there are many testimonials from people who are eating this way. Including Jordan and Macala(sp?) Peterson and various other people who have been eating this way for 10 years. If you think eating this way will make it so you don't get your essential nutrients, turns out, yes, you will get all of them. Whereas, a vegetarian diet or high carb diet you won't. I am however a strong believer in diet can make a massive difference as I have seen this on myself and also, I can't help but feel there is a real mental health epidemic and it would actually make sense if excessive carbs were actually a mental health problem. If there continues to be no problem with it I might try it when I retire from work. |

Thanks Emily. A friend told me years ago that she read something an ER doc says she does. That whenever a suicidal person shows up in the ER one of the first things she does is give them a steak to eat. Because the amino acids in the steak helps to nourish the mind. I don’t know how true it is. Maybe it’s the power of suggestion but when I’m depressed (like now) I crave a steak. If have enough energy to get to the grocery I buy steaks. And after eating one I feel a little better. Hope this doesn’t gross any vegans out but I’ve eaten a small steak for 3 days in a row. I’m going to check out the doctor you referred to. Thanks again.

I also think that there is a massive health benefit to "ketosis" which maybe that is where this comes from. Someone showed me that your brain runs on glucose, quite well, but only about 92% of the brain gets energy this way. But when you turn your body into ketosis, your body gets ketones which cross the blood brain barrier and can give your mind tons of energy. |

my problems with Anxiety decreased significant when I switched over to a low carb/ketegneic diet. I don't eat sugar either. Mental clarity and energy levels are amazing. I try not to eat too much meat. I would almost consider myself a vegetarian with occasional meat days.

So I decided to give it a try this weekend. Lordy. I was looking for results with regard to back pain I am having. A lot of people say it helps with pain in the body. Did it?
- Yes, my pain was improved. But not sure if it was that or just lying around the house. This week I will eat as low in carbs as possible. - People told me that it works because you are in ketosis. I don't think that is true. I was never in significant ketosis. (trace only). - I believe it works due to what is IN the food. Amenio Acids and Vitamin B. - An unfortunate side effect was the level of... going number 1. Protein makes you piddle and I could hardly get off the toilet. I am down 2 lbs this morning. - I have to admit it is very hard for me to eat -- just meat of any kind. I was not very hungry at all. Here is my suspicion... this diet is a good thing in short duration. Like every 30 days you do it for 30 days or perhaps you do it for the summer. But I wonder if doing it all the time really is good. |
