Hello,

I joined to post on the smoking forum, but I do have mental illness:

Severe major depression with psychotic features
Anxiety
Some OCD

Essentially, I feel I left quitting smoking too late.

I just finished Allen Carr's EASYWAY to Stop Smoking, and you're supposed to celebrate the fact that you quit. He talks about quitting before irreversible damage is done.

In my case. I already have had a precancerous lesion removed from my tongue and I go back to the oral pathologist next week for 2 more biopsies.

I'm finding it hard to celebrate and stay quit.

Given my mental status, possibly having a serious smoking-related disease is very difficult to handle ...

I will also mention that my psych meds have made my mouth dry and that is a major contributing factor, as well.

IS anyone else in the same boat? Or similar?

I'm really quite scared and having trouble staying mentally well at this time....

Thanks

I never smoked. So I can't relate to your situation directly. But I have had cancer. So I do know something about that. (I'll spare you the details.) It was a very weird time for me & the beginning of my slide down into overt (as opposed to hidden) mental illness. Here's hoping your upcoming biopsies come back normal.

Thank you, Skeezyks.

I'm sorry you had to go through cancer, now wonder your mental health was affected. Are you cancer-free now?

My mental health issues were present before this ... it sure makes things harder though.

I'm sorry to hear you had a pre-cancerous lesion. I hope the biopsies come back normal.

Have you considered a support group for people with addictions? Or one for people with mental illnesses? I go to a depression and bipolar support group and find it very helpful to talk to people who can relate. They are often free too, unlike therapy.

Yes. To my knowledge... cancer free now, thanks for asking. This was about 20 years ago.

trish, you might find some support here, too, for not smoking in the addictions forum: https://psychcentralforums.com/smoking-cessation/

Thank you, travelinglady ...

I made a post there.

One person responded.

I had another biopsy today, and I know I ought not have looked up pics online, etc, but I did and I wouldn't be surprised if it's squamous cell carcinoma.

I had called my psychiatrist and we upped the antipsychotic for me to deal with this stress.
