This from my dad, (who was a big believer in discipline with the hand) when asked "Why??"

I forgive his mistakes. But I struggle every day with the knowledge that I am never good enough.

(Sorry if I missed some of your posts- )
Don't you think our parent's generation were taught: Spare the rod, spoil the child?

Though, I have never felt confident that everything I did or did not do for my children was absolutely correct. I have never understood people who think that their actions are perfect in every way. My brain just works differently.

It is good that you are forgiving but I think you sound a bit aggravated by that sort of comment also.

This must have been exceedingly painful to hear. I'm really sorry.

When a parent makes this invalidating comment, they prove how out of touch they are with the feelings of one who feels so inadequate. The child is reminded not only of how unworthy they themselves feels, but also of how their parent did not, and still does not, understand them and accept them.

Thank you everyone.

My dad....would get angry. His anger is what made the spanking 'extra special'....

Talking about it to him...or rather me talking about it...will stick with me because there was no apology...no mention that it might have been wrong....nothing like that.

He merely complimented himself that his method of punishment worked.

My dad got angry too - we were also hit.

However when he became a grandfather he reconsidered, although he never apologised he did say he thinks hitting children is wrong. That meant a lot.

Your dad is mistaken, that is his fault not yours.
