Just curious as to how effective and safe it is for long term use.

I haven't used valerian on its own but a friend of mine used to make herbal tea with valerian in it. I found it relaxing but it wasn't knocking me out or anything. I can't remember the other ingredients but I'll ask her if I remember.

I have not tried valerian, but I used lavender essential oil. Use 100% therapeutic grade only (make sure it comes in a dark glass bottle and does not have any "other than natural" ingredients in it. Place 3-6 drops on your pillow and turn your pillow over so the aroma wafts up while you sleep.
This helped rid me of insomnia after doing it nightly for about 4wks... I am sure different people take differing amounts of time. As far as I know, as long as you are not allergic to lavender there is no danger in doing this particular method. |
