I disclosed to my counselor last week that I had started a few short sessions (10 min) of mindfulness (via an app on my phone). I found it really hard... the first day I was really relaxed at the end, but the next few days didn't go that well. Is this normal? I expected to feel good every day.

Anyway, my counselor loved this idea. He wants me to choose a mantra. Anyone done this and don't mind sharing theirs? I'm struggling with this homework assignment, and it is due Tuesday!

I've read different things (thank you, Google) but I'm still unclear on the topic.

Hi, I have been practicing mindfulness meditation for about 37 years. The idea of mediation isn't exactly to make one feel good all the time, it's to help you practice how to cope better when you don't feel good.

Practicing meditation is kind of like saving money in the bank...the payoff is there when you need it.

I used to use a mantra - have used several - years ago, but I don't really use a a mantra anymore, I just focus on my breathing, and on just noticing the thoughts floating through my mind.

A mantra can be any word you find useful...or you can practice without a mantra.

Meditation is not easy, it takes work, practice, patience, and dedication. Tremendous commitment.

Well what I try to relieve myself of stress and anxiety Breathing in to calm my body and breathing out to smile. This is a form of Thich Nhat Hanh meditation.
Try this and it will help your mind free of all unnecessary thoughts .

I've meditated with and without mantras. Personally, I think you can meditate without a mantra easier but I think it helps a lot of people remain grounded. These days, I'm not using a mantra.
