Hi Carmina,

Thank you for sharing your insights. It is extremely important and vital that you continue to do. Your professional perspective is paramount to changing the cultural and systemic problems in healthcare.

If you don't mind, can you share more about your experiences? Perhaps specific cases that you remember that led you to stop pursuing the career as Psych nurse?

I have to say, I know what you are saying is true; I have personally experienced it.

Thanks,

I've been IP 3 times, for long periods, all at the same psych hospitals, and all the nurses have been spectacular - nice and really caring. Even when I was on a locked general psych unit, that had people with all kinds of diagnosis and many were involuntary the nurses were nice, if perhaps more rushed to engage in real one on one care.

I have had some good nurses, too, but I really remember the bad ones--grumpy, impatient, even rude and, as I say, downright mean.

Thank you for speaking out

The ugliness of providers did not encourage me to stop my Sui thoughts

I’m sorry you’ve been mistreated

They Should be more understanding. It’s so sad how they fail us

Again thank you for being brave enough to speak the truth.

Trig Re: Mean psychiatric nurses

I had a psych nurse that worked for my Pdoc and every time I would call in depressed and needing a med change she would put me inpatient... usually with the cops showing up at my house! She sent me in one time and I think she checked every box... full physical restraints, in a nasty, dark “watch” room, strapped to a metal exam table with a thin Matt on it, door locked... you’d think I was Hannibal or something, at least that was how I felt. The psych nurse on watch was very nice though... once I got out of watch onto the psych ward though they were nasty to me unless they wanted me to counsel another patient. They wrote me up for everything.
I don’t get it either.

Yes, I've noticed that some nurses are mean to people who are brought in for attempted suicides. (I became suicidal while on the ward.) I had a fellow patient even ask me why I thought the nurses were being mean to her, and that's what I told her. I just don't get it.

It's like we intentionally meant to somehow make it hard for the nurses. In some cases they'd probably be suicidal, too, if they were going what we were going through.
