Default SSDI 5 Month Waiting Period

Do you get back pay for the mandatory 5 month waiting period after being approved for SSDI?

Also, about back pay in general, how is that determined?

My husband applied for SSDI last year and got his approval letter the next month, since he was approved like right away, will he receive any back pay at all? Will he get a small amount for the weeks from the time he applied to when he was approved?

if it did not take at least a month to get the approval there is no back pay to get.

SSI is a monthly income. which means every ........month...... a person gets their money (most on the first of every month)

if a person applies and it takes a month to get approved SSI will send the person a check for that monthly check that they missed.

if a person applies and it takes 6 months to get approved they will receive a check totaling the 6 months worth of checks they missed out on.

but if it takes less than a month to get approved then they havent missed out on any of their checks so there is no money coming to them for that not missed pay check.

keep in mind though some states deduct the amount of money if on other state assistance while waiting.

example some states allow a person to be on welfare while at the same time applying for SSI.

some states require welfare getting their money back during that waiting period between applying and approval. why because that money is considered income that a person wasnt elligable for if they get approved by SSI. its a strange situation,

think of it like getting paid twice for the same job. one person is going to want their money back.

so sometimes welfare allows a person to stat on their welfare grant but pay them back if the approval goes through. this situation results in the back pay going to welfare first for deducting the amount that they are owed then whats left if anything goes back to SSI and then SSI issues whats left to the person approved for SSI. like I said a very strange situation but I know of those that this has happened to.

my point is there are many reasons why a person wouldnt get back pay from SSI.

to find out if your husband is going to get any back pay he needs to contact his caseworker listed on his paperwork. or he can go to his nearest social security office and they will look up on their computer who he has been assigned to for a SSI caseworker. or he can call the number on his award letter where it says any questions call ________. they will be able to look up on their computer what his caseworkers name and number is. then he calls his caseworker.

keep in mind unless he has named you on his paperwork as his representative or care taker they will not be able to give you any information. it will have to be him asking for the information and talking to his caseworker. hippa privacy rules and such prevent SSI from giving out information to just anyone not listed as having permission on the case paperwork.

Thanks amandalouise.I'm talking about SSDI not SSI,does that make a difference?

He applied for SSDI,got approved the next month but was told there's a 5 month waiting period before those checks begin. In the meantime he did receive SSI until the SSDI began. That's what I was wondering,if he will get backpay for these months he's been waiting for the SSDI to begin since being approved.

It's all so confusing to me.I think he should just talk to them himself instead of getting me to find out for him.

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of advice to give to you, Betty_Banana Is there any sort of service or assistance that you can contact and ask about this? Perhaps you could try to ask the bank?. I hope you'll be able to find a solution. It must be really frustrating. Why doesn't your husband want to talk to them? Is there any reason in particular? Perhaps you should talk to him about this and see how it goes from there. Especially if it's bothering. I'm so sorry, please don't give up. Feel free to PM me anytime. Let me know if I can do something to help you. Wish you good luck! Let us know how it goes. Sending many hugs to you

I hope I can help this make sense.

Whether he will get backpay depends on his date of disability. For example my date of disability is 8/6/11.

I applied for SSDI in late Feb/early March of 2012. I was approved in April 2012. this is where I get confused and my memory isn't great but I was paid one or two months of back pay since my 5 months were up in February. The reason I'm not positive is I think SSDI pays one month behind (ie the Feb check covers January) so I think I got 2 months backpay and one month regular pay in April 2012 but it may have been one month backpay and one month of pay. I just can't remember anymore.

If you need me to try to explain better let me know. You can also call your local social security office and they can explain. I got a call the day they received my approval and they explained all this. I lived in a very rural county though and in bigger cities that may not be something they do.

No, you don't get paid for that 5 month period.

I applied and said I had been unable to work since Feb. 2012. Once approved, my benefits began to accrue in August.
