Default I Have Atypical Learning Disabilities

My learning disabilities are non verbal. I do fine verbally but get mixed up telling right from left, got D's in algebra, bad sense of direction, bad at spatial things. I always wondered why I felt half smart and half stupid. In school I was in advanced reading but remedial math. My organizational skills aren't great either. Over 30 years ago I convinced the psych clinic where I was going to do IQ tests on me. Those tests explained a lot. The worst part of having these learning disabilities was I was never able to get a job with a good income plus being mentally ill was another setback. I never made much money but I was careful with the money I did earn and was always able to live within my means. The career I really wanted was to be a nurse but that was out of the question. Most of my jobs involved phone work - I was a receptionist, did phone sales and telemarketing.

Definitely can sympathize and empathize with you since have a similar learning style, not going to call it disability. My neuropsychological test showed strong scores and much higher in verbal learning than visual learning, about 34 points different and believe 10-15 points difference is significant. Just need to like what you are really good at. For me I like writing, creative writing especially and like learning foreign languages a lot. Now ask me to give a presentation, no forget it. Ask me to eat lunch with my new boss and new co- workers, no way too nervous, ok I can do it, but was told later “you looked petrified.”

Yeah I think my difference between non verbal and verbal IQ was 36 points. I didn't do well on my SAT test but I tested in the top 2% for creative writing. I used to love writing poetry and long letters to friends. Sadly I can no longer write poetry - the ideas just don't flow like they used to. Whether this is due to psych meds, age or both I don't know but I really miss being able to write poems. I'm curious what career path did you take? Thanks a lot for your response to my post.

Yes poetry writing, that’s awesome, sorry you are having a writer’s block now. My career path has been difficult since it initially required public speaking and then to continue long term required playing politics, and finally ended up being very stressful since forced to perform under duress (very scrutinizing person supervising me).

Now analyze data and includes reading medical records then compile data into a report. It’s interesting and fits my introverted personality. I love learning about science, nutrition, neurology, and have thought about being an epidemiologist. My dream job would be to be a successful writer working from home writing best sellers under a pseudonym and wouldn’t hardly have to leave the house, have groceries delivered. An agoraphobic and introverted person’s dream come true.
