PROS:

Short acting 5-HT1A partial antagonist (which, I think, not sure, helps neural changes that are reflective of antidepressant treatment)
|
CONS:
|
Lots of weird side effects, requires multiple dosing and for lots of people has a limited time of efficacy (from what I've observed)
|
|
This drug was prescribed to me during college after a rather abrupt discontinuation of low dose clonazepam (and I still think I'd have graduated had I not been treated like a drug seeker). I was not happy about this, so my observation was kinda skewed, but it ended up being a very helpful drug. It increased my appetite, which was a good thing because I had lost around 30 pounds in a 2 month period because eating in a cafeteria was hard. It had some interesting interactions with my other meds, I was taking Vyvanse for ADHD and the buspar both inhibited its efficacy and enhanced it; to clarify, if I took a large dose (and I was RXed 60 mg) at night, say 30mg qhrs instead of 15 mg qid, and didn't take a dose first thing in the AM, my vyvanse would have an increased effect on my attention span and motivation without any additional anxiogenic effects. However, if I took even 15mg first thing in the AM with my vyvanse, it would blunt those effects (and presumably blunt some of the anxiogenic effects of amphetamine as well). I think these effects are due to buspirones ability to block dopamine, and its main active metabolite being an antagonist of adrenaline receptors- so a large dose qhrs would sensitize these receptors, and buspar's short duration of activity means that there is no lingering drug left on the receptor to block DA and NorAD (also some more complicated effects on the DA and NA systems via the down regulation of serotonin 1A receptor). It definitely increased the antidepressant effects of the Zoloft I was co-prescribed, helped me sleep and helped a modest amount with my social anxiety. It wasn't the best medicine, but if benzodiazepines were Legitimately off the table for someone, I'd recommend this medicine.

I've been on Buspar for 8 years now. I have taken it with Lexapro and now with Viibryd. It works well to keep my anxiety under control and it does not make me real tired. I take one pill in the middle of the day with lunch. I get a little drowsy, but it isn't bad at all. I take two pills at night. I do get a little more drowsy, but that is good cause it helps me sleep. I do not feel drugged or like I can't wake up in the morning.

My GP prescribed buspar PRN for anxiety. It didn't help. After taking it I would feel even more nervous. I would take it sometimes to help me fall asleep, but I stopped doing that when the anxiety it caused became too great.

Primary use of this drug is for antianxiety, not as a sedative/hypnotic. It is an anxiolitic that is commonly used in place of ativan as a non addictive med. I'm not sure why they have it listed as sedative/hypnotic. Even the manufacturer has a different take on the med. Regardless, I have found it quite helpful in alleviating my panic attacks and PTSD symptoms.

Wow! Buspirone has so far been a great help to me. I have been taking fluoxetine (Prozac) for 2 years and well lately it has lost all of its inital benefits. My doc recommended giving Buspar a try. I do not know if it's Prozac-back-online or buspirone alone, but I definately feel like something has pressed the right buttons in my brain and my anxiety is withdrawing. I've understood that many people find buspirone useless which is a shame. It might be that buspirone needs an SSRI in order to exert any effect, on the other hand I have generalized anxiety and buspirone works the best against this ailment. Seriously people this drug is highly selective and working in the field of molecular biology I must admit that this thing by mechanism is just made for killing anxiety (even the slight D2 antagonism is necessary IMO).

I was on this medication for about 6 months and I still am not sure if it worked, don't believe so.
I eventually got on
Klonopin for anxiety because my panic attacks were too severe and buspirone didn't work immediatley to help anxiety attacks.

I thought this med was worthless and my p-doc crazy (ha ha) until she boosted my dose up to the higher limits (above 50 mg/day). Bingo! I now take it in three doses a day, and am finding myself considerably less anxious. I've had anxiety problems--serious problems--for nearly 20 years and have only found this level of relief with benzos in the past, taken in a reactive sort of mode. The buspar, taken prophylactically, is doing very well for me. You MUST work with your doctor to ramp up to the effective dose.

I was prescribed this after having sudden 'anxiety attacks' for about a month. I took it for 5 days and really felt as though I was there but not there. Having two very small kids, I couldn't handle not being there for them. On the fifth night, my oldest woke during the night after an 'accident' (still learning) and I had no idea the next morning that my husband had gotten my child up, changed clothes, stripped the bed, and sprayed the mattress pad down outside with the hose. All at 3 in the morning! That scared me, so I stopped the med the next day. Oh, and I still got heart racing and sweats... so it did not really help the nerves to much.
