Description

This medicine is used to treat psychotic disorders such as hallucinations, delusions and hostility. Phenothiazine drugs may also be prescribed to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting.

Proper use of this medicine

Take this medicine exactly as directed. Swallow extended-release capsules whole, do not open. Do not take more of this medicine than is prescribed by your doctor. If your doctor has given you a suppository, follow these steps: If the suppository feels soft, hold it under cold, running water for 1 minute. Dip the tip of the suppository in water. Lie down on your left side and raise your right knee to your chest. (A left-handed person should lie on the right side and raise the left knee.) Using your finger, insert the suppository into the rectum, about 1/2 to 1 inch in infants and children and 1 inch in adults. Hold it in place for a few moments. Stand up after about 15 minutes. Wash your hands thoroughly and resume your normal activities.

Missed Dose

Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Possible Side Effects

Contact your health care provider if the following side effects become bothersome or don't go away; dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, rash, constipation, vision changes, difficulty urinating
If you experience involuntary movements, sore throat, pounding heart beat, or unusual bruising or bleeding, notify your doctor at once.

Warnings/Precautions

This medicine may cause drowsiness.
Be cautious when driving or performing other hazardous activities. This medicine can impair judgment.

Overdose

Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all other medicines that you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.

Pregnancy/Nursing

This medicine should be taken during pregnancy only when clearly needed. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits when using this medicine during pregnancy. This medicine may be excreted in breast milk. Nursing mothers are advised to talk to their doctors before breast-feeding.

I normally purchase recommended meds through americantrustpills (seriously, this place sucks) free of danger. Sadly I use to take lots of it so minimal expense is extremely important for me.

CONS:	Took this and had akathisia. I did things and didnt remember I did them. I hate this medication.

I took this while I was outpatient. The Head dr gave this to me and I did stuff and don['t remember but my family told me what had happened. I also had terrible akathisia.(restless and cannot sit still)

PROS:	i found it to be a good alternative to benzodiazapenes for sleep and anxiety management
CONS:	significant 'drugged' feeling, rash developed with minimal sun exposure

I took significant amounts of this medication when I was extremely suicidal in hospital. It gave me a really drugged feeling but it also numbed my emotions and helped me through a horrible time. For deluisons / hallucinations etc I think the newer generation medications tend to be better because they have less side effects. The newer generation ones tend to take some time to build up in your system, however, so sometimes they prescribe older generation ones to tide you over while your new generation kicks in. This is also known as a 'minor tranquelliser'. I have used 50mg as needed for anxiety. I've also split a tablet before an exam. I found it a useful alternative to benzos because I am at high risk of addiction and benzos make me feel *good* whereas this one makes me feel drugged - though if I get the dosage right it is just enough to take the edge off. I'd reccomend it as an as needed alternative to benzos especially for people at risk of addiction.

CONS:	adverse reaction to direct sunlight, causes you to hallucinate, blocks your sinusus and causes trouble breathing threw nasal cavitiies, antiquated and addictive, taken every 4 hrs but effects wear off after 1 hour, shakes in the morning commanly know as t

this is an outdated 1950's medication,it is addictive and causes more problems than it solves, it is harder to wean yourself off than benzodiazapines, it has bucket loads of side effects, most are listed on the meds info sheet that comes with the pills or liquid, but a few that i listed in the cons list are not. i have been on this medication since i was 19, i am 32 now, i have had numerous medication changes in that time period but never have i been taken off chlorpromazine, i am currently on 300mg 4 times daily and have been told by the doctors that it would be dangerous for me to come off them after such a long exposure to it.

PROS:	initially was good at controlling anxiety level
CONS:	after taking this med for a short time, I ended up with symptoms similar to parkinson's

The brand name for this med is Thorazine. I was using mail order perscriptions at the time & this was sent some months for my perscription for thorozine. A had taken this med for a few months, starting at a low dose. As the dose was increased, I noticed I wasn't able to walk without help nor could I control my hands in order to control my eating utinsils to get food from my place to my mouth. I was taking this along with compozine to control the nausea from my migraines. Initially I didn't know what was happening, so went to ungent care. They initially suggested it was the compozine, so I stopped that & the symptoms continued. I finally went to a neurologist who determined that the thorozine/chlorpromazine was continuing to cause the symptoms. I immediately stopped taking the med & it still took over a month for the symptoms to go away. It was determined that this med did cause parkinson's type symptoms as my reaction to it.

PROS:
CONS:	floor felt like it was tilted, everything was like looking through a distorted fog.

I recieved this while hospitalized. as soon as I was released I stopped taking it. Others that I know have had good luck with this but I did not. I left the recommend to others on yes because everyone experiences their own side effects and so on. One person flop medication can also be another persons miracle drug. so I always say all you can do is try it and if it doesn't work for you then let the prescribing professional know
