PROS:

a most magnificent med, but only at the right dose (not too much)
|
CONS:
|
at high doses, complete anorgasmia; at medium dose - no negative aspects whatsoever
|
|
At the medium dose of 80 mg a day, taken all with dinner to avoid daytime sleepiness (which happens if you split the dose and take 40 mg with breakfast), this medication causes no side effects and helps with:
- complete relief from psychotic, suicidal depression
- no mania, no psychosis
- back to being productive
- back to enjoying life
- relieved the mask-like face caused by Risperdal and psychotic depression and now I am my regular smiling self again
- grounding effect - it is called "GEO DOWN" for a reason
- once again, complete relief from suicidality
- return of cognitive abilities, facility for analysis and reasoning
- I am now hopeful and optimistic, but not flighty/hypomanic
- brought back in touch with reality and relieved from derealization

Geodon is the first antipsychotic that has controlled my mood and also helped with depression somewhat. Plus I'm able to lose weight on it.

It took me 6-9 months of being "non-functional" to adjust to my (generic) Geodon. I am fully functional now, with zero hallucinations or delusions. This is the best medication for me, EVER! I will stay on it for the rest of my life!!

I was given this medication and took it as the doc prescribed for a few months even after begging to be taken off of the medication. This was after being removed from a combo of effexor/ativan/trazodone to just this medication, which was a huge mistake. By the end, I was taking 160mg a day and sleeping 12 hours, not functioning well in school and unable to keep up with my fast paced job. I will say though, much of my issue was in diagnosis. I was originally diagnosed as MDD with Anxiety disorder, then as bipolar II, and am now looking at a potential rediagnosis of CPTSD. Overall though, I would not recommend this medication.

PROS:

it's all quiet in my head, no psychoses or manic episodes, makes me actually able to do things like an able-minded person
|
CONS:
|
it's so quiet and almost lonely, it makes me really really sleepy, it's completely killed my creativity which used to be very high.
|
|
It helps a lot. I don't know what I would do without it; I know I wouldn't do well. There are a lot of things I miss about me before this medicine, though. I miss doing art and writing and having fun. Now I don't even have the desire to create anything. I just want to do what is expected of me (and nothing more) and sleep.

Yawning, Losing train of thought
|
|
As I have stated in a post about other medication, it is possible that Geodon was exacerbating undiagnosed Type 2 Diabetes. When on this med, I yawned all the time not like sleepy yawning, but like I couldn't get a full deep breath and my body was trying to get more oxygen by yawning. Now that I have my Dx of Diabetes, one way I can tell my sugar is hitting a high is when I get that shortness of breath.

Sleepiness - if I take it in the morning
|
|
If Geodon makes you sleepy, try taking it at dinnertime. The sleepiness kicks in for me about 4 hours after I take it. Don't drive when you first start to take this medicine -- I almost ran off the road until I started to take the drug later in the day. It has made a huge difference for me. I have had severe depression for several years -- unable to motivate myself, didn't want to leave the house, etc. But that has changed on Geodon. I read a discussion online between some psychiatrists who said they had patients who "ruminated" and Geodon worked for them. Rumination can be a sign of psychosis. I think my negative feelings perhaps fell into the rumination category, so I may be psychotic instead of depressive. I have taken an array of anti-depressants but none worked. I write this in hope that it will help someone else with similar symptoms.

I started taking this medication about a week ago and I have got more done in this week than I have in about an entire year. Before I started I was in bed 24/7. I had no desire to do anything. My anxiety, depression, mood swings were very, very bad. I know I havent been on it long but it has already done wonders for me. The only bad thing ios when I wake up I am just knocked out. So tired and can't keep my eyes open. That eventually wears off & than I feel great. I am also taking a small amount of klonopin but i have taken this for a long time. it really helps the anxiety. I wish that I had started on this medication along time ago.... maybe so many bad things wouldn't have happened. I think I should take the med earlier in the evening so by the time I awake the sleepiness side affect won't be so intense. This medication is a life saver.

It effectively controls my mania's (prevents) with no side effects!

CONS:

There is no negative aspects - it's perfect
|
|
I have bipolar disorder w/psychotic features. Geodon prevents the psychosis and even improves my depression with absolutely no side effects. Except for the price (but I have insurance) it's perfect. The only thing is you have to take it with food. But that's no big deal. Much better than Zyprexa and Seroquel which failed to bring me out of a 2 year psychosis. Risperdal Consta brought me out of of that 2 year psychosis, but worsened my depression and made me overweight. So I switched to Geodon (lost the weight I put on) and now life is much better. Still improving. Employment is looking like a possibility now. I was really bad. I'm currently on disability. Things are changing for the better, finally! Praise for Geodon! Don't know what I would do without it. If only my doctor would have tried Geodon first, it would have saved me a lot of misery and expense.

Cleared up most of Schizophrenia with no side effects after adjustment period.
|
CONS:
|
Had heart issues and felt stupid some days on it.
|
|
This cleared up all of my psychosis on the proper dosage and all but one of my negative symptoms which I still have totally lost the ability to express myself emotionally and such. Some people complain of it destroying their creativity but mine actually was better and less chaotic. I stopped doing things like screaming at people over conspiracy theories which I really think someone was going to end up calling the police on me if I kept going at the rate I was going. It didn't really fix my paranoia at all it just made me think of it less and I still get confused like I'll do things such as go to reach for my belt but end up reaching up to my ear instead or be driving a machine and mean to let off the gas pedal but slam down instead. I had to go through withdrawal a couple of times due to bad doctor planning and that was no fun at all. Do not go through cold turkey withdrawal no matter what you do. When I was increased to 120mg once a day I started having chest pains like my heart was being ripped apart that lasted for ten minutes and my psychiatrist and I decided to just abruptly stop the Geodon and go with Risperdal. I don't experience any weight gain at all on this drug and actually lost a little bit of weight.

None I've seen yet. I've been on it for three weeks now.

Geodon worked like a charm within about a week to do just what its name implies -- to bring me back to earth from a very agitated state. I must admit, though, that I don't have any basis for comparison beyond Depakote, which my shrink also prescribed for my PTSD some months prior and which worked well to bring me out of a six-months-long dissociated state for which I am still mostly amnesic. What an ordeal. For all the deservedly bad rap given pharmaceutical companies, I'm pretty grateful for Geodon and Depakote.

Geodon has somewhat controlled my hallucinations better than other medications. I am diabetic and have tried several other drugs for hallucinations and none have worked as good as the Geodon. I just wish it would take more of my hallucinations away. This medicine is very expensive but after spending out money for 2 months for it, I was able to qualify for the drug company's assistance program!

I pay nothing on the Pfizer Connection to Care plan. Check to see if you can qualify. I have a hard time with the dizziness this drug induces. It becomes very hard to deal with and I spent quit a lot of time laying down. I suffer from inconsistent sleep with Geodon. Some nights I have trouble going to sleep and other nights I will wake up very early in the morning and be unable to go back to sleep. My legs would also shake, and I was told that this is common at low dosages. I had the shakes at 80mg. but they evened out a bit at 120mg. This drug does absolutely nothing for anxiety and only mildly masked my depression. I can deal with the depression a little better than I deal with mania so its a good compromise. I have stopped taking it twice. The last time I stopped taking it I dropped out of grad school within a quarter. Both times I have experienced major depression once the drug starts working its way out of my system. I just have a hard time with the damn dizziness, and the tremors had started to get a lot of attention from both students and professors. All in all the drug isn't unbearable, but it does have enough side effects that make the positives a bit less positive. I'll be back on it within the week most likely. Good Luck All.

I took Geodon for about 4 months. I started at 40 mg and ended on 160 mg. Its effect would wear off withing 12-14 hours after taking it leaving me agitated, anxious and depressed in the late afternoon to early evening. Accentuated fear of heights and social situations. I lost about 15 lbs that I had gained while on Zyprexa. If you don't want to gain weight and can live with the side-effects this medication would be nice. I however was tired of feeling anxious and depressed in the evenings so I have quit taking it.

I feel that I had quicker results with the other meds. I have an appt this week and can't wait to either get off of this or add something to get me out of the dumps.

I was dizzy and disoriented as well. These feelings lasted for 36 hours. However, I did feel some positive effects in this short period of time.

Geodon taken for schizophrenia is a most excellent treatment by far compared to past treatments with risperdol and zyprexa. Risperdol made a zombie out of me and zyprexa caused me to gain 8lbs in the first week of treatment. I feel more like me... not a walking pfizer pill zombie. The first week i had many negative side effects but fortunately by the second week they slowly faded. I have a very big problem affording the price but my sanity is worth 150 bucks. I tried being more economical getting one dose of 40mg instead of two doses 20mg which i assumed would cost more. It took a while to find the right time to take the pill because the 3 hour onset of the pill causes drowsiness and ability to operate machinery or make proper judgments(before bed is typically recommended). After about 13 hours on the dosage i note a tapering off or withdrawal effect. My body starts to get anxious, restless, and muscle spasms occur. I am guessing a proper dosage for myself would be twice a day. Every ... Body is different but this has been my experience on the drug for 4 months.

I take 40mg for manic depression. Although, I still feel sad most of the time, it is not interfering with my life. It does not have strong anti-depression relief so far, but I think it might change after 6 weeks of constant use. I've used for about 2 weeks and it gets better each day. I wouldn't go as far to say that this should/will replace a mood stablizer, but it is a very effective "add-on." If you tend to be dependent on others out of fear or an avoidant personality, like I was, this drug could really help you with those problems. I was taking Lamictal, but am allergic. It was excellent for depression, but it was not until introduced to Geodon that I found that I had other problems that were interfering with my life and could be improved. It's worth a try.

I can't give this drug an excellent rating because I am very cognizant of the fact that this is how it worked FOR ME and not for everyone. The "big ticket" items--i.e. going back to school and going back to work--made this drug worth it for me. People do worry about me if they see me shaking periodically, and the tremors may "out" you to strangers as a psych patient, but I don't have time to care about appearances and what other people are thinking. I also have to give props to this med for relieving me of the quite persistent suicidal thoughts that I had during this last holiday season in 2006. My mind is much more "quiet" now, and I can prioritize and think. Sometimes it takes a little more work than before to engage in academic or problem-solving activity, but you can get back to your normal level in very little time. One of my Masters' professors said I was writing PhD. level papers this past quarter . Now THAT'S progress.
I do have an appointment this coming week with my doctor to discuss the tremors and the sleep problem (at present, if I go to sleep and wake up eight hours later, it physically feels as if I just closed my eyes and got a few minutes of sleep). I have heard Provigil has been used for this so it looks like I may be trying yet another drug. However, for restoring my ability to finish my Masters Degree after having various ups and downs, temporary leaves of absence, extensions, etc. and for finally giving me a chance at a career, I have to give this medicine a thumbs up in my case.

constant noise in my head diminished

CONS:

Insurance ran out - VERY EXPENSIVE

Side effects were odd aside from sleepiness - I got a stuffy nose ALL of the time about 3 hours after taking Geodon and a cough too. It did help the incessant noise go away I guess more than taking nothing, but overall I don't know that it was that "one big helper". I stopped taking it cold turkey with no real side effects, also did that with Effexor to no bad end other than a 180 degree swing into depression from Mania.

I'm more social

none

Before Geodon, I was in bed 24/7. I wouldn't answer the phone if it rang or the door if someone knocked. My family would leave numberous messages for me to please return their calls just to let them know I was still alive, and I would just erase them. Now thanks to Geodon, I'm out of my bed. I answer the phone. I answer the door. I return phone calls. And I'm able to be social with my family and friends. I do not remember having any side effects from Geodon. My family went to my doctor's office and thanked him for putting me on it.

in conjunction with seroquel completely controlled my biopolar disorder

extreme weakness

This medication was very hard for me to wean onto. It took about two months to get used to it and almost every day i felt so weak I could barely do anything. This was helped when my doctor told me to cut out my morning dosage. I still felt weak but it was much better.
I feel this medication was a breakthrough for me. I went through 25 medications to no avail,I was in and out of psychiatric hospitals and I was giving up. This medication was a godsend and I am very thankful that I stuck with it through the difficult initiation phase.

non-efficacious for PTSD & depression
|

Since SSRI's were not effective for my depression and PTSD symptoms, my psychiatrist prescribed me Geodon. I had to stop taking this medication because the extra-pyramidal symptoms (EPS) became too severe.
I was used to having side effects of tremors, agitation, anxiety, and restlessness when I was on the SSRI's so I just dismissed these same symptoms I was experiencing with Geodon for 3 months. Big mistake! Eventually I developed drug-induced Parkinsonism, extreme akathesia, and tardive dyskinesia.
These EPS adverse effects were medically unjustified because I had never been psychotic, (see *note below). Why was I prescribed this medication?
Geodon didn't take away the PTSD symptoms that I feared. Also it didn't take away my hopes to die or kill myself. This drug never helped me feel better.
I remember routinely lying to the mental health folks who evaluated me for a suicide risk. I denied questions like: "Do you have a plan to hurt myself?" I knew if I said yes that I'd be locked in the psych ward or have my meds increased. I was stuck in misery, and the psychiatrists could not help me.
I was told by a couple psychiatrists that I would need to be on some type of anti-psychotic for the rest of my life. I wonder how many other patients with PTSD these doctors have prescribed this erroneous treatment.
I was switched to another antipsychotic (Seroquel) and placed on Artane and propranolol. I was also taking Desyrel, Zoloft, Klonopin, and 6 other meds. (*note: I had a drug-induced psychosis from this coctail of drugs.)
I've been drug-free for 2 years now. I guess the doctors were wrong in my case.
I do not recommend antipsychotics for anyone.

Ehhhh. Somebody else needs to contribute his or her experience with Geodon, because I've only been on it a couple of months, and frankly, I can't tell if it works or not. I got it as a replacement for Risperdal. Risperdal worked like a charm on the self-injury urges. Geodon ... well, not so much, at least not so far.
I haven't noticed any side effects, but basically, I haven't really noticed *anything.* I have no idea if it's working or not.
UPDATE 1/4/07
Geodon turned out to be a complete waste of time for me. I believe it actually made my symptoms much worse because I was essentially unmedicated, it did so little to basically nothing. I begged to be put back on Risperdal!
