More Information

Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially children/teenages) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with a doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication, even if the treatment is not for a mental condition. Tell your doctor immediatley if you notice worsening depression, unusual behavior changes, (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes. Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed.

PROS: great for anxiety and depression and decreasing nightmares and traumatic memories
CONS: restless legs EVERY NIGHT, tiredness (i take it at night), dry mouth

great med for its price. ive been on it for exactly a year now. its a good boost for an antidepressant... it wasnt my first one i was on. from asking others, lexapro isnt great acting alone, but if you take other meds it works well. it makes me really sleepy, so i take it at night. i tried taking it in the morning but hated it. the only con is that it makes my legs so restless at night, and i have to time falling asleep right so i fall asleep right when remeron kicks in but before my legs get restless

PROS: does its job; takes the edge off my depression with no side effects, makes me functional
CONS: dosage maxed at 20mg, may need more

This is the only anti-depressant that has worked for me. I've been using it for years and am very happy with it.

PROS: manages my anxiety and depression
CONS: none

Overall, I love it. I have an anxiety disorder and chronic depression, and this helps me be a functional human being. I am so much happier with my life on this med. I take the generic version which gives me no side effects instead of the brand name which gave me insomnia. I started noticing an improvement in just a few weeks and have been on it for several years now. The only issue I've had is that except for certain pharmacies (university pharmacies for students and Costco), even the generic is quite expensive. If it weren't for Costco offering this at $12 for a 3 month supply (even for non-members), it would cost over $100 a month. Ultimately, this med is why I went from near daily panic attacks, usually multiple times a day and/or for hours at a time, to maybe two panic attacks a year. I also am no longer depressed and am able to hold down a full time job and even excel at it, when I couldn't even manage a part-time job with flexibility before.

PROS: helps with depression and anxiety
CONS:

This is a great medication. My depression really lifted and I felt so much better when taking Lexapro. It does make you slightly drowsy, but not so tired that you feel like you can't wake up or like you are drugged. I took this medication at night, so it helped me sleep. Whenever I exercised, I would get a real high also. Some of that was from this medication also. The brand drug could be pricey, but it also depends on the insurance that you have.

PROS: Improves mood, Helps fight OCD, Cleanest SSRI out there.
CONS: Orthostatic hypertension (dizziness) and hot flashes whenever dose is changed.

This pulled me out of misery to a state I have never thought I could live to. The first SSRI I was on, the first few days were weird - like depersonalization at times. For the first five months I could not have an orgasm. But soon after it was all back to normal and everything else was so much better. It has changed my life. I could overcome the most of OCD. I stopped checking every corner of the house before going to bed. I could enjoy going out with friends. I could work on problems one step at a time than worrying on what I have no control of. Along with a full year of this treatment I also went to therapy every other week, which was very effective too.

PROS: Few side-effects
CONS: Sexual side-effects

Provides a floor level of deep depression but floor still too low for me. Needed additional medication for effectiveness.

PROS: Helps with depression
CONS: Can become tolerated by the body, so dosage must increase

Works well for depression/bipolar disorder. Not many side effects besides the tiredness. Dosage may need to be increased since it is easily tolerated by the body.

PROS: it works
CONS: none

I usually order proposed medications through americantrustpills (seriously, this place sucks) without danger. Sad to say I use to take plenty of it so minimal expense is very important for me.

PROS: Does what it is supposed to do
CONS: Terrible side-effects that outweigh the benefits of taking it

I was on this medication for three days. I couldn't handle the side effects. I was up all night with severe nausea, chills, restless legs, and was just very uncomfortable overall. I was on the lowest possible dose, as well. This medication isn't best for everyone.

PROS: no pros
CONS: no libido + withdrawal symptoms

This medication did nothing for me, except the lowered libido (no libido at all). Also, withdrawing this medication is a real hell: dizziness, nausea, irritability, out of balance, hard time falling asleep... Plus it is very expensive ($70 +tax). I am so glad that I am not talking this anymore. It did not helped me.

PROS: No Side Effects
CONS: Didn't Work, Withdrawal Symptoms

I took it for anxiety and it never really benefited me. I've been on it twice and it didn't work either times. The withdrawal symptoms were a pain, so I had to wean myself off. No side effects for me otherwise.

PROS: It took away my inability to talk to people, being on it I'm able to carry on a conversation
CONS: It makes me feel like not doing anything

I have been on this medication for about 4 years, It really helped with my anxiety when talking to people, also general anxiety. I have not noticed it helping with depression. But that could be that I didnt feel all the anxiety of everyday life that I felt better. Its much easier for me to be around people and socialize. However I'm really depressed.

PROS: I feel less down, majority of the time.
CONS: Nausea, Drowsiness, Irritability.

It causes me get very easily irritable, and it tends to make me lash out. I have more severe depressive plunges, but not often. First few weeks I was so tired I couldn't get out of bed. I'm on my 5th week and I still feel fairly tired and I usually get nauseous. The only positive aspect is that I don't feel as down as I would usually, but it doesn't make too much difference.

PROS: eliminates anxiety, greatly alleviates depression
CONS: sleepiness

The generic is fabulous for my anxiety and depression. The only issue I have is sleepiness (although the brand name gave me insomnia), so I've been trying it out at different times of day to find a way that doesn't make me quite so sleepy during the day. This is the best med I've tried, so I really hope to make it work.

PROS: None
CONS: Put me into acute mania

This may be a very good medication for depression alone. I was treated with Lexepro after being misdiagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. Contraindicated for treatment alone for people with Bipolar Disorder, which is my correct diagnosis, discovered after taking this medication.

PROS: really helped control swings in anxiety and depression and brought both down a lot
CONS: a really wild ride in the beginning

I felt like I was riding a rocket without a guidance system in beginning, but once that calmed down it has been a wonderful basis for my cocktail. I did have pretty nasty headaches in the beginning, but I find that with about all of my medications in the beginning. I have been on a 20mg from the beginning and have been with it for about four months. It has been very helpful and shows no sign of decreased efficacy.

CONS: fet really really really sick for 2 weeks

The first two weeks of taking this I felt completely out of it and sick as a dog. I noticed a difference after those two side effects went away. I felt less depressed,I could focus, less anxiety. Over all I feel ok!~

PROS: addressed my sexual fetish
CONS: causes lack of focus, sleepiness, lack of motivation

This happened really unexpectedly: while I do have a harder time achieving orgasm on Lexapro, it treats my fetish. I usually need to fantasize very precisely about or see images of my fetish to have an orgasm and it often detracts from being with my partner, but on Lexapro I am aroused by a range of sexual stimuli. It's really pretty amazing and strangely wonderful not to be bound by that fetish that I have hated my entire life. What sucks, however, is that on all other ADs, I am usually really "on", remember things well and function at a high level intellectually. On Lexapro, I have a hard time focusing, I loose my train of thought, and I generally feel out of it. So perhaps, combining Lexapro with Wellbturin might be the answer for me.

PROS: no side effects, works quickly
CONS: none

first AD i've tried. Hit bottom and had major depression and GAD...couldn't leave the house, suicidal thoughts, felt like I was in hell! Prescribed Lex by psych, started at 5mg for 3 days, then up to 10mg. 6 weeks in, and it's working great for me! Felt a change in the first week, and just kept getting better; on week 6 now and I feel like I have my life back. A true game-saver and life-saver for me!!

PROS: It helps control bipolar and depression.
CONS: The side effects are awful and very potent.

When I started out on it, there weren't any side effects, but it didn't help my bipolar either. Then after about 4 weeks, it started making me very, very sleepy, to where I would fall asleep at school, in the shower, all sorts of awkward places. And it also made me very hungry, to where I couldn't control my eating. At one point I gained 10 pounds in one month from it. It never really helped my bipolar at all, and the side effects made it even less worth it to take the medicine.

PROS:
CONS: insomnia, suicidal thoughts, major anxiety

The first night I took it, I wanted to kill myself. I could't sleep. I wanted to tear my skin off. After a few days I was okay. Of course, I was only on it for a short time. Didn't help at all much. I felt so out of sync.

PROS: none
CONS: everything

My Mother committed suicide on this medication. I was prescribed it before this happened to my mother and I attempted suicide. I did not know my Mother was taking it. I don't know why a doctor would prescribe someone diagnosed with bi-polar lexapro. Also. while I was taking it my mood, depression, just everything was terrible. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone!

PROS: I really like lexapro, together with geodon - it makes my world better
CONS: none

It has always pulled me out of the abyss and made the world a much finer place

PROS: none that I noticed
CONS: completely took away my ability to achieve orgasm with very first dose, sleepiness

Started on 10mg dose. I am having difficulty rating the product overall because it may have worked, but I only took it for 6 days. With the very first dose, I was completely unable to have orgasms (no matter what). I never had trouble with this before. I was also very sleepy - felt as if I'd taken a sedative. I never even got to the point where it may have helped my depression. The orgasm issue (for women) is apparently very rare, but, lucky me, I had it happen and ever since I went off of it the orgasms I do manage to have are MUCH weaker (about 1/2 the intensity, if that). It may have ruined me forever. No thanks!

PROS: It is very effective for both depression and anxiety
CONS: It's expensive since there's no generic version

It works well and I've had no side effects with it

PROS: none for me
CONS: anxiety, irritability, BP mixed state, horrible withdrawl

Lexapro never helped my depression, and I took it for one year. I had no idea I had bipolar disorder until I took Lexapro and it eventually sent me spinning off into a severe, prolonged mixed state. When it was time to discontinue, I got very sick with nausea, headaches, increased anxiety, sweating, and "brain zaps" that seemed to shock my brain every few seconds--for weeks.

PROS: quiet effective
CONS: causes extreme drowsiness; excessive sleepiness

escitalopram proved very effective in controlling depression, although depression does return occasionally for brief periods. however, a bizarre side effect: extreme and excessive sleep . i needed sleep for 12 hours and even then would feel slepy during the day. now I am taking modafinil for reducing sleepiness. OK now.

PROS: Im not in a fog
CONS: no sexual appetite

I have been on numerous antidepressants and have found this one to be excellent. When the psych doctor first perscribed it for me I was put on the highest dose which is 20mg and largatil with sleeping tablets as well,as I was suicidal so I slept most of the time but after 6 weeks I was able to go off the largatil and sleeping tablets but remain on the lexapro at 20mg. I have gained some weight and my eyesight is not good Im not sure if that has anything to do with this drug. My partner gets upset with me due to my lack of sexual drive, but he is very patient and tolerant of my moods. I keep active and work parttime so for me this drug has been ideal in stabilizing my mood.

PROS: Very effective (for me, at least)
CONS: Reductino of libido

Very effecive for me in killing depression and anxiety. Few side effects, but some reduction in libido. I've genereally been skeptical to SSRI's, but Lexapro has proved a wonder drug for me personally.

PROS: Decreased symptoms slightly.
CONS: Withdrawal is difficult.

Lexapro is one of those medications where you start to feel side-effects because the amount of medication in your system is fluctuating, and when it's lower you go into mini-withdrawals (for me this meant light-headedness and nausea). Advice: ALWAYS take it at the same time every day. And, if your doctor is at all OK with it, split your dose so you take the daily amount over several doses during the day--that way the amount stays even. It took me two months to taper off the medication. Plan on taking that long and feeling a little under the weather while you're doing it. Taper off really slowly. My doctor said there wouldn't be withdrawal symptoms... Me on the floor half-conscious begs to differ! So go slowly, split your pills if you have to, let your system adjust.

PROS: none yet
CONS: none yet

Doctor just prescribed me 1 10mg tablet every night..although many people have told me that their acne flares up pretty bad when taken daily..so i was wondering if it was ok to only take when im anxious because some days i feel perfectly normal, but then others i feel like i need to take something...so i wanted to know if i can take it when i feel i need it and also if the acne side effects will still kick in if i take it like that?? please any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

PROS: Kept me upbeat, optimistic, generally happier
CONS: No sex drive at all, jittery, irritability

I have nothing to say concerning cost since my insurance covers it. It's helped me concerning my depression, it's kept me feeling good about myself and life pretty much. It's really really helped me out of a deep slump I found myself in. But if you're going to be put on this or are concerning it, your libido is probably going to die. I haven't had a sex drive at all since I was put on it and I find it almost impossible to have an orgasm. Other than that, I always find myself figeting, getting jittery, irritated easily, and impatient, and that's not really normal for me at all. I used to not talk a lot and loved listening, now I can't stand listening and I always need to be talking. Sometimes I find it hard to pay attention to what someone's saying or even to what I'm reading because I get so side tracked and twitchy. It's fine to me though, it's pulled me out of the depression I was in and I've been feeling better than ever. Sober and self-injury free.
