You can feel a little sluggish, sleepy

I started having episodes of severe anxiety (with depression) around age 20....45 years ago! No phobias. No negative life events. I hid it well but was terrified. Held off going to doctor. Stigma? Finally at age 49 was prescribed Buspar and Paxil but they didn't work. Continued to suffer...went back to different doctors. Finally, when I was 55 a Dr. put me on Xanax extended release 1 mg twice a day. It worked with just occasional setbacks. After 10 years on it...Dr. and I decided to try a cut-back. It was nine months of living hell. We both came to decision to stay on the 1 mg. ER twice a day. Also, on Lexapro 15 mg/day. I never felt "high" on Xanax.... just a basic sense of well being. I'm 65 yrs old now and know doctors don't like to give Xanax for extended period of time. But, I believe I'll be on it the rest of my life and willing to accept side effects of long term use. It's better than losing your mind.

slowed down panic attacks relatively quickly

addictive, didn't always work

It worked well enough, but not always. It was hard to tell when I was supposed to take it, since it's labelled "take as needed". The level of anxiety I needed to be experiencing for this pill to have an effect varied quite a bit.

Practically everything, wonder drug for anxiety!

Tolerance, dependency & addiction potential

Had no side effects. Cheap. Hard to obtain rx. Tolerance builds quickly, dangerous at high doses & can cause dependence/addiction. If it wasn't addictive I would eat them all day everyday like candy.

This medication helped me a lot with the panic attacks and anxiety overall. However, after 1 year of taking it, I became resistant, and felt like a drug user; my body asked for more and bigger doses! I immediately told that to my doctor and he switched the medication to clonazepam. So far so good. (I will tell more about clonazepam in it's section)

This medication has made my work, home and academic life increasingly bearable as i suffer from GAD and Panic Disorder as well as PTSD. I have been on 1mg 3 times daily for 3 years. I have been on several different anti anxiety medications and tried Alprazolam once with the anti depressant I was on and it didn't work well. It turned out I am not tolerant to Effexor and the Alprazolam was just masking the increased panic attacks I was having. A year later once stabilized on celexa I started the Alprazolam again with a dose of Clonazepam and have been a godsend for three years now.

It was prescribed to me for anxiety and suicidal thoughts. It felt good taking Xanax the first days, but it didn't fix anything. Now I'm on it for four months. Tried to stop myself, but it's hard. Better not begin with this drug.

I can not be without xanax. I can not sleep without it, literally. It has helped me deal with my panic attacks since they started. It is my godsend drug. However, it can throw me into a depression pretty fast, I have to increase the dose periodically for it to remain effective, and I miss grapefruit.

I'm sorry but, I love Xanax. I love it, love it, love it. And that's the problem. One feels good, two feels better and three, well, three is blissed out. Get it? This is a drug to stay away from except for very, very limited supervised dosing - like your doc counting your pills dosing. This drug would be way way too easy to OD with.

It does make ur skin bad and hair thin. Besides all that, when I want to get off it, the withdrawal will be horrible. Good luck

I used to get panic attacks, especially after a manic episode. I would use Valium to prevent or treat panic. Valium lasts for about 8 hours which was more than needed. Xanax does the trick in a much shorter time. It is also effective to induce sleep when I am anxious about something specific.

I have been diagnosed with major depression, ADHD, anorexia, bulimia, insmonia but NOT anxiety. I was taking it at night to get to sleep (0.5mg), and it was working, but the sleep you get is not a good quality at all. I never found it addictive in the sense of wanting to take it. I was very happy to stop taking this even though I had to suffer through 3 straight days of being awake before finally sleeping. After many weeks off of it, I had a panic attack and thought I would try 0.5mg, and I found myself completely depressed for the next 8 hours. After that, I refused to take it. I think it could work VERY well for a select number of people who are using it under well supervised conditions. Other than that, I think the potential for over-use/misuse is sky-high; you definitely have to be careful not to ramp up the dose unnecessarily.

This drug will ruin your life. If you are one of the fortunate people to have not tried this drug then make it stay that way. It will make you worse then when you started when you try coming off it. This drug should be banned and it makes me so angry that it was made to help people. The natural way for recovery is the right way - hypnotherapy, relaxation therapy, counseling.

Stops my panic attacks in its tracks
|
CONS:

Affects short term memory

I have suffered with severe panic attacks brought about by agoraphobia, and panic disorder for the past 5 years. I tried the natural route, therapy, and other medications. I take 100mg of Zoloft daily, and only take 0.25mg of xanax when I feel like I may have a major panic attack, which since raising my zoloft from 50mg to 100 mg daily has almost wiped out the need for any use of xanax. Xanax is addicting, which is why I chose to take Zoloft, and supplement the Zoloft with xanax as back up for when I am under a lot of stress. Without the xanax, I would have to say, I would still be confined to my house, barely eating, and not participating in any of my childrens social events. I still suffer from anxiety, but I am managing it much better. I highly recommend Xanax for those of you that suffer with panic disorder, but use it only when needed.

I suffer from severe panic attacks that can last for hours. I have a fear of medication and convince myself I get all the side effects. Xanax is great for when you feel an attack coming on. It allows your body to stop getting so worked up. However, you cannot take it long term and you cannot drink alcohol. I was only taking a .25 when absolutely necessary. If you are very worked up, xanax will bring you down to a normal state. If you are not that intensely worked up, it can make you feel VERY tired. I usually drink a soda with it.

Xanax is an interesting medication, it has very positive effects if used correctly but negative ones if used incorrectly. Xanax, as you already know, is very addictive because tolerance is built up quickly. It causes drowsiness so if you have never taken it then do not drive after you take it until you know how you will react to it. I have taken 1mg Xanax XR for over a year now and it still makes me slightly hyptnotized after I take it, a little sleepy. But it helps my anxiety. I also take 0.5 mg ativan at night to help me sleep. I will be talking with my doctor soon to figure out what to do because my anxiety is back.

I was put on this med by my general doctor for anxiety. Which very well could have somewhat been daily stress. Which is not supposed to happen. After THREE years of daily 6 mgs doses I was hooked. When I stopped taking it because I was feeling fine, my stomach would kill, I could not sleep, sweating & I would feel like puking.
I HAD to maintain a daily dose in my system to feel NORMAL, not even calm.
I am 26 years old & 110 lbs. So I started when I was 23. When I started going to a psych I was diagnosed with Bipolar. All I had been doing for 3 years is masking the problem.
I don't drink or do drugs. I do not have an addicting personality. But even now after getting myself off these drugs from fear of being a druggie, I STILL crave that numbing, self medicating feeling.
Benzos are THE most dangerous drug around I think. (Script wise.)
Even now my memory is nonexistent. The past 3 years are a blur to me.
The fact I did not want to stop taking them, told me it was time to.
It caused me to slur & other odd behaviors which society does not except. lol.
I am now on Seroquel waiting to add one more for my behavior. Seroquel helps with the destructive high manias I had, not with the lows.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH THIS DRUG. IF YOU ARE ON IT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME WHEN YOU TRY TO STOP YOU COULD HAVE A SEIZURE. IT IS A VERY COMMON THING WITH THIS.

|
The first time around (when I was in college) I took the .5mg of generic Xanax and I could barely get out of bed. My friends literally had to grab my ankles and pull me out of bed so I could get to class (usually late).
Now the second time around, I'm on 1mg Xanax XR, and I absolutely love it. There is one problem; sometimes it makes me incredibly dizzy and disoriented. I quickly have found the solution; if I chug a bottle of water after taking it I feel fantastic.

Took me right out of a panic attack when I was having one.

CONS:

NONE!

I used .25-.5 mg of this when I was having a panic attack. It ALWAYS took me down, and made me feel "normal" again.
I am no longer on it, per my pdoc.

stops panic and anxiety attacks, helps you sleep, doesn't stay in your system for too long
|
CONS:
|
drowziness, dizziness, body becomes too tolerant if taken daily

I've been on and off Xanax for over five years. This is the ONLY drug that helps my panic and anxiety attacks. It also helps take the edge off a day of major depression. This drug should not be used daily because the longer you take it, the more your body adjusts to the medication and you will need a higher dose. This drug can be addictive for SOME people, not all. It should be a back-up in case of a panic or anxiety attack or on nights when you just can't sleep due to anxiety or depression. I highly recommend this drug for those who need something every now and then; but if you suffer daily from anxiety or panic attacks, I would encourage you to look at other treatments with your doctor.

Really helps in an acute panic attack
|
CONS:
|
If the usage is regular, it may start causing too much tiredness and loss of energy
|
|
This is a really good pill for acute panick attack, but one shouldn't start taking it on day basis, as for ensuring that the attack doesn't come therefore, cause it can make you too tired if taken every day, even small amounts.
So one should take let's say only one alprazolam per day, like 0,5 mg, because it's not realistic not to take at all if you really have a panic disorder, but it's better to save the rest of the pills for a situation when they are really needer, if you're going in the center of the city, travelling somewhere, facing some situation where you've had panic feelings.
One good thing about alp. is that it doesn't make you numb and emotionless like some SSRI-pills, and it really helps immediately, not after 3 weeks or so.
And one doesn't HAVE to increase the dosage, in terms as if the original relatively low dosage wouldn't work after a while if you don't increase, growing the dosage is not necessary, it's voluntary allthough allways easy to do so like in all benzos.

makes you feel like you have no energy

It just made me really sleepy, I had to take a nap during the day. I'm not really sure that it helped my anxiety, it kind of made me more depressed because i had no energy.
