PROS: Wipes out symptoms (mine were delusions)
CONS: Always hungry/Weight Gain, Tiredness

I have been on olanzapine for ~5 years. It has completely wiped out all of my symptoms, which included: delusions, agitation, anxiety, mood swings, paranoia. When I first started taking it it felt like my mind was shutting down. I got used to that after a couple of weeks. Now it only causes some daytime sleepiness and extreme hunger. I gained 40 lbs on this, so it is not for everyone. Other than that I have not had any issues with this drug and it has benefited me greatly.

PROS: worked for psychosis
CONS: lots of damaging side effects

Iv'e taken most of the antipsychotics on and off for years and have nothing really good to say about them except they masked my psychosis. olanzapine has been one of the most damaging drugs of all. most of the drugs seem to have blocked my emotions, thinking, pleasurable feelings. the long term effects I've developed from this drug- emotionally I'm less able to feel about things, my cognition is affected- I cant think properly, even talking I get jumbled up...these effects started when I was on the drug and carried on after stopping it. on top of this I gained over 2 stone and I was getting terrible dystonia affecting my eye muscles an speech muscles. anyone who has experienced these movement disorders like dystonia or akathasia will know how horrific they can be... These drugs are a complete nightmare!

PROS: None for me
CONS: Extreme Anger and Rage

Caused me to rage out of control. Punching walls, doors and throwing a complete tantrum nearly daily for 3 days before I quit taking it. It is the worst drug on the market for people with intense uncontrollable rage, in my opinion.

PROS: well.... I felt nothing
CONS: weight gain

As poster Mufub says "If you want to be one of the "fat living dead," this is the one for you!" - Made me totally apathetic about everything but when and what I would eat next. Being already overweight, I went back to the doc and said "Listen, I'm already fat and it is one reason I'm depressed. If I keep taking this, I'll be much fatter, and much more depressed about being fatter!"

PROS: Helped me with my irrability and rage.
CONS: None

I started on this several months ago. This medication helps fast and noticed calmness within a week. I had lots of rage and irrability and that has gone. It has also helped with racing and intrusive thoughts. They say it causes weight gain, and i've put on weight but I haven't been eating or exercising much so I can't really blame the medication, yet.

PROS: numbness?
CONS: extreme weight gain, glazed eyes, confusion, tiredness

I've read that antipsychotics are like a chemical labotomy and I agree with that statement. I didn't even have enough sense on zyprexa to try to get off of zyprexa. I didn't realize that I would have a chemical dependance on antipsychotics because it mucked up the dopamine system. I took two ten mg pills every night for three and a half years; which is over ten thousand psychotropic pills and now I may never recover and function with out antipsychotics. During my sedation on zyprexa I started smoking cannibus and the cannibus was the only thing that let me have any feelings which led to a habbit of smoking cannibus all the time. I slept all the time and had no energy or sexual interest the only good thing about zyprexa was that my seritonin level didn't drop much on the drug and I was still able to study computers. The antipsychotics also led to repetitive behaviors and unusual body postures. I'm only a young man and this drug took me through the ringer and the cannibus and cigarettes together were brutal. After three and a half years on this drug my mind has problems that it never had before.

PROS: no anger, amazing at reducing paranoia, clear thinking, calmess, serenity, peace of mind, glass half full
CONS: insane appetite, slight zombie feeling, slightly slower reactions

Amazing drug for getting rid of anger. Helped get rid of intrusive and racing thoughts. Great at relieving paranoia and paranoid thoughts. Provides a calm relaxing feeling, with anti depressive effects. On the other hand you WILL eat more on this drug. I am a long time avid gym freak and was at 6% body fat at just around 160 lbs. After taking this drug due to food cravings I am now around 175lbs, virtually all of it fat gain. I have managed to get down to 170, but had to constantly feel super hungry. Back up to 175 now as I will just eat to satisfy my appetite, while I try to get a different drug for my symptoms (paranoia, depression, mania, racing thoughts). Be very CAREFUL as I am attempting to switch to Seroquel or Abilify because I want to be my old athletic self.

PROS: If you want to be one of the "fat living dead," this is the one for you!
CONS: No "life" in LIFE! Want diabetes? Want a new LARGE wardrobe?

Extreme weight gain! No verve for life! Would rather be dead, but too sedated to act! Loss of self. Loss of personality! Loss of health! Loss of family life! Loss of "Id"! Absolutely no "gain."

WARNINGS GALORE FOR MANY CONDITIONS IT HAS A GOOD POSSIBILITY OF MAKING WORSE, SUCH AS KIDNEY FUNCTION. POSITIVELY A HUGE WEIGHT GAIN, ADDING TO DEEPER DEPRESSION, PLUS ADDED COST FOR CLOTHES. WEIGHT ADDS TO HYPERTENSIVE PROBLEMS. SAY "NO" TO THIS DRUG! GEODON IS SIMILAR IN ACTION.

PROS: Calms me, induces sleep
CONS: weight gain, huge belly, headaches, back pain/ joint pain, edema

I am taking 5 mg of zyprexa currently and it has caused my belly and feet to swell!! I thought it was the cure all in the beginning, but the negative aspects of this medication are to big... I went from weighing 110 lbs to weighing 138 pounds. Plus, some chic told me I looked pregnant... This medicine has turned me into a eating machine.. I can eat a whole thing of ice cream in one sitting..

PROS: controls delusions
CONS: ruined my life, now i'm a vegetable.

this drug is pure poison, the equivalent of a "chemical lobotomy", and no, that's not a metaphor. It shot my memory, slowed my thinking, caused difficulties concentrating, lost all motivation, pleasure and emotion, felt this foggy blank feeling in my brain (thoughts would just bubble to the surface, otherwise empty head), felt heavy, weak, movements slowed (like there was lead in my shoes), bad coordination, losing train of thought, confusion, which all leads to low self-esteem, constant complaining about symptoms, aggressiveness, irritability. it basically turned me into a vegetable, zombie, whatever you want to call it, i feel inhuman. psychiatrists LOVE to say, "oh its the illness" but all these symptoms started JUST after (like 1 day probably) i was put on this medication. despite all this, i was advised to continue taking this toxic crap and have been on it for almost a year, am now switching to ziprasidone. all of these anti-psychotics are poison though, i wouldn't be surprised if ziprasidone ****s me up too. in brief, my life was robbed from me, and i feel i don't deserve this. you don't chop someone's balls off if they steal from a grocery store. that's what it feels like. i'm kinda surprised other people can stand taking this stuff every day. i used to be a top notch student, used to enjoy talking to myself in parks at night, i used to feel like a lone wolf on top of the world, now because of these f'n meds, i have no energy to pursue any of these things. read joanna moncrieff's "The Myth of the Chemical Cure". read some user reviews from this really crummy, horrible service called .askapatient (seriously, this place sucks - do not buy from them) . these medicines do not target the illness directly, they are crude and blunt. they WILL shrink your brain over time. ***** antipsychotics, ***** psychiatry, ***** my dysfunctional brain, and ***** the world.

PROS: none
CONS: made me a zombie, weight gain, violent

$680 a month! gained 30 pounds within the first month. made me into a zombie, and very very very easily angered. got extremely violent and was almost hospitalised 3x. i'm not usually a violent person but this made me scary. the weight gain was pretty disturbing, and the fact that my insurance refused to cover it was horrendous. overall, terrible experience. not worth it!

PROS: no side effects except weight gain but he needed it
CONS: didn't help with mania,irritability

My son started out on 2.5 twice daily and it doesn't seem to help with irritability or manic syptoms or aggression. they moved him up to 5mg twice daily and things did improve but there were still some signs of aggression although not as bad. but doc brought him back down to 2.5 mg because he still showed signs of aggression and she was worried about side effects. She then added lithium to mix.

PROS: cleared my mind considerably, helped with mania, cleared my head after awhile
CONS: Severe drowsiness, brainfog for the first few days, insane weight gain (5 pounds in less than a week)

Did a great job stabilizing me, but due to the increased appetite and weight gain, my doctor took me off of it (I'm already overweight). If you can learn to curb your cravings on it, it's an excellent drug for anger.

PROS: Knocks you out
CONS: Incapacitated in the morning

I was given this in the hospital to help me get to sleep. I guess if you want to sleep or drug someone this is the stuff. Personally I never want to wake up not being able to keep my eyes still or not being able to form complete sentences again. I think the doc was actually a little shocked from how eff'd up I was. lol at least they didn't give me anymore meds after that

PROS: Made me feel calmer, more at peace within myself, less of a 'war zone' in my head
CONS: Made me feel very tired

I found this was therapeutically most effective for me in terms of symptom relief at 10mgs but had major problems at that dose with feeling 'zombified' which meant due to other issues at the time (looking after wife with vasc dementia)i had stop taking it. Now on 2.5 mgs which doesn't work as well but no 'zombie effect'. Would have preferred to have been slowly titrated to up to 10mgs or alternatively slowly titrated down to a dose that combined max therapeutic effect with min side effect.

PROS: none
CONS: zombie, zero personality, excessive drowsiness.

I was prescribed 2.5 mg Zyprexa back in February 2003 in addition to 100 mg Topamax and 75 mg Effexor XR for Bipolar II. The shrink told me it worked great for anxiety and it would augment the Effexor XR. I took it for approximately three months. It knocked me out for 10-12 hours each night; and if time allowed I would take a nap in the afternoon. That really sucks when it's a daily occurance! When I was awake (which was often less than half the dang day), I felt like a zombie! It was horrid! My thinking was slowed, I rarely experienced strong emotion, I had next to no creativity, and I was even quieter than normal. I ended up taking myself off. I didn't want it to dictate my life anymore! Three months was more than enough time to give it a chance, but not so long that a huge chunk of time was "lost".

PROS: Calming and relaxing drug
CONS: Weight gain, stomach upset

I have taken Olanzapine on and off for about 4 years for Bipolar Mixture Affective. I was given it instead of Risperidone. My weight went from 7 1/2 stone to about 10 stone. I felt very good mentally and nothing really bothered me. I have tried many similiar drugs, Olanzapine was a favourite but I am concerned about side effects of the drug, such as diabetis, I know somebody who got it after taking it. It also interferes with your hormones and I get a massive stomach on it, which is horrible, exercise doesn't do a thing for it, I think it must be water retention! Also I think it is starting to wreck my stomach causing wind and constant hunger pangs also sleeping until 2.00pm. I switched to Seroquel for it didn't work the same mentally. I am trying Abilify again at a low dose because I think it is the closest I can get to feeling good mentally but without the concerns.

PROS: Helped with sleep
CONS: Made me eat way too much

I only stayed on it a week because I couldn't stand how much it made me eat. It did help with sleep though.

PROS: No intense emotions at all
CONS: No intense emotions at all, Weight gain!!, intense sedation

I was on this and I missed weeks of school because I had no impulse of wanting to wake up. Before I would go to bed I would eat like one of those little Japanese guys in the eating competitions. Didn't really care for acting like a zombie and pretty much forgetting a good year of my life due to apathy and being tired. This medication might be good for someone institutionalized or some one who doesn't really interact with anyone in the first place but definitely not for people who want to have fun and be able to wake up every morning and not every afternoon. Took forever to find the right dosage. Zyprexa also killed my sex drive. Read Crazy by Pete Earely and it hits the nail on the head on how it made me feel. I hear this medication also causes diabetes and makes your ticks worse after you get off of it too.

PROS:
CONS: made me dizzy, nauseous and panicky

I took one 5mg pill and slept for 18 hours straight. When I finally woke up was so groggy, dizzy and felt terrible for the next 2 days. My doctor told me not to take anymore pills.

PROS: helped me to think mor clearly once my body adjusted to the dosage
CONS: I gained 80 pounds in one year

The weight gain is enough to make anyone depressed. It is also VERY difficult weight to take off. The psychiatric aspects of this med were good enough to stay on it long enough until something better came out on the market for me, and that was Abilify.

PROS: keeps me focused, allows me to start something and finish it, curbs some intrusive thoughts
CONS: high blood sugars b/c of it

It is very expensive so you will need ins. or a free prescription drug plan. Lilly does offer it for free to qualified people. I think it works very well.

PROS: able to think clearly, no hallucinations or delusions
CONS: weight gain, sometimes don't have a period

Zyprexa made me have a much more normal life than without medication. I was having delusions and spinning in circles, walking in circles, thought I was an angel, and wouldn't eat. This medicine gave me a new life. The only thing is my doctor once lowered the dosage I was taking and I became suicidal, so I had to go back to 5 mg and I feel fine with no voices or hallucinations or anything. Just clear thinking.

PROS: cleared my head, immediately calming
CONS: might be lead tired at any given time on this med if not careful about dosing yourself

This drug is very good, yet the side effect of tiredness, comes with no warning. It does clear your mind when fustrated. I am bi-polor and it helped me to quit being manic, which was comforting and good. I did gain too much weight from it. It really cleared my mind and I had crisp feeling and self-control, (less impulsive-which I tend to be, when untreated) So besides the weight gain and the tiredness with no warning the drug is effective for my mania. I am now using Morinda Citrafola (works for me but doesn't necessiraly mean it will help others in the same fashion- See alternative treatment section of supportgroup) It helped when I was under stress going crazy with my mate, because I was getting parinoid. I had to cut the 10 mg pills into quarters and use it 4 times a day rather than take it all at once. It was very helpful with my mental health but I think the smalled increments had something to do with it, controlling, thus trying to prevent lead tired spells which I noticed as it's worst side effect. The weight gain was less important, whereas the drug was so good in treating my mental health problem that the benefit far outweighed the harm with this drug. I took this drug in this fashion for 6 or 7 years and it helped me a great deal to have a better life. I recommend it to people that want to move beyound their past and to grow. I think the dosing could be the only question about it.
