Hello, I just joined this Forum today. I have a 29 year old son who has OCD type behavior that I really never noticed until the past year. He was diagnosed ADHD in 2nd grade, but has had no counseling or treatment after elementary school. I am wondering if ADHD and OCD commonly occur together? Does one induce the other in some way?

One other sideline note, is that my son has no healthcare insurance, because his issues have prevented him from working. Is there any help for him, without insurance?

Hi JustMeABC. Welcome to Psych Central. I am sorry to hear your son suffers from symptoms of mental health issues and has no insurance.
If your son is living independently they may qualify for medicaid or other state supported health insurance. There are many options including online communities where your son could get peer to peer support. Also a search on google brought up some support groups of which I have not personal experience but may be of interest. Thank you CANDC for the information. I guess I need to find out exactly what "living independently" means. He is living with me, completely supported financially by me, but he is not a dependent in the legal sense. That is, I don't claim him as a dependent on my taxes. I receive no benefits from any government agency, or anywhere else for that matter, for supporting him.

What I have heard others do is assume the debts or cosign the debts of their children and finding themselves impoverished and bitter when their children turn their back on financial responsibilities. I think clear boundaries about any debts they incur might help prevent that. Having mental health support is usually available by state medicaid or other state program. It may be worth checking with your son's case manager. at least people are entitled to SSI from federal govt I believe. Disability is possible as well. __________________ Super Moderator Community Support Team "Things Take Time" |

Thanks again, CANDC! I never thought about Medicaid before, assuming that was for older people. I helped my son apply for Medicaid yesterday, and it was approved!

Oh wow JustMeABC. You made my day. So glad the idea worked for you.
How about food stamps, food pantries and other services. Would that be a help to you? @CANDC __________________ Super Moderator Community Support Team "Things Take Time" |
