Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'd like to learn more about OCD from people who have it ideally. I have googled this, but I feel like the information I found to be to vague.

1) Are the symptoms of OCD the same or different for everyone?

2) Does OCD range in severity like depression does? If so, what is the range?

3) Does it cause you to repeat yourself all the time?

4) What things do you feel you need to do that you can't control? Do rituals or repeating certain things help calm you down?

5) What are the main symptoms of OCD? What are your symptoms?

6) Does it bother or annoy people at work, your family, or your friends?

7) Is it noticeable?

8) Can you control it or not?

9) Are you getting help for it or not? If no, why not?

10) What triggers it for you?

I'd appreciate it if any of those questions can be answered.

Especially questions related to wether or not you can control your OCD or not and what triggers it. Also, what does OCD cause you to do? And if has affected your relationships or job.

I'm not looking down on people with OCD. As I said, I'm trying to learn more about it. I'd appreciate any answers.

Hi @jesyka,

I’ll answer, as I see no one else has yet.

I am not diagnosed with OCD, but think I have a mild case. Here’s why:
1. I have a habit of typing, just in the air using my fingers. I’ve done it as long as I can remember, having learned how to type at age 7. I type what people are saying, especially in class with teachers. I’m barely conscious that I’m doing it. I do believe it is different for everybody as to what they do to exhibit OCD.

2. I believe my case is very mild. I have heard of others who have it severe to where it debilitates their lives.

3. I don’t repeat myself with words. I do get into repetitive thoughts though.

4. I have read that control and rituals can be part of OCD. I don’t have this. Mine is just more of a nervous habit. Again, I’m not sure I have OCD.

5. As I mentioned the typing is something that seems like OCD. From what I read, I do have some other traits. But, in other diagnoses I’ve read about, those traits overlap into them.

6. No one else has ever noticed my typing or thought (commented that) I seemed repetitive.

7. I don’t try to control the typing. It doesn’t bother me.

8. When I have mentioned my concerns about the OCD to doctors, they ignore me.

9. I think the trigger is nerves, anxiety, boredom, needing more to do like multitasking, overactive mind?

10, sorry, I messed up on your numbers and ran out missing an answer

I hope this helps you.

Hello @jesyka,

I don't have OCD but I have read about it. So all my answers are based on that.

1) The symptoms are different from person to person as there are different types of OCD and all have different compulsions.

2) Yes, there are differences in severity of OCD as some people have mild OCD and some have severe OCD symptoms.

3) In Contamination OCD or Counting OCD people repeat the stuff.

4) There is a therapy called ERP therapy in which you have to expose yourself to the thought which you get. You can read this article to know more about ERP Therapy

5) There are many symptoms like depression, fear, anxiety, compulsive behavior, repetition, intrusive thoughts

6) If they are able to notice the repetitive thing you do than it might bother them.

7) Only some types of OCD are noticeable. OCD like contamination OCD in which you wash your hands again and again.

8) Yes, you can control it. The only way to deal with it is to control your thoughts.

9) As I don't have OCD but one of my friend has it and his family member are supporting him.

10) I don't know what really triggers it.

Hope this might help you
