Default help please , any different opinions on this ?

Any different APPROACH to see this issue ? your answers will literaly save me

so 2017 was really a bad year for me , and my issue is that :

==> If i find that a product was made during that time (2017) i dont take it , or if a video was created in that time i dont watch it , literally anything thats has to do with that year i dont do it

==> BECAUSE : in the back of my mind i say " if i get this phone that was created in 2017 , then it will be thanks to that depressing year that im gonna meet new friends, (because thanks to that phone , i will chat with new people etc)

As if thanks to that depressing year (year the phone was made) that im gonna make new huge changes in my life ,

i already regained my old happy self , 2018/2019 were good , i understood what made me feel during that bad year etc ...

PS : 2017 was really a depressing year for me , i have never felt that way in my life , thats why it impacted me this way , my behavior isnt anxiety avoidance , i just feel depressed when i think about using things that were created in 2017

Everyday i spend hours avoiding stuffs done in that time

PLEASE any DIFFERENT APPROACH , PERSPECTIVE ? so as to accept every thing that was created in that year ?

thankyou..

Hi, Stillthinking94, and welcome to Psych Central! As you already know, your connecting the year something was made with what went on in your life is not a good thing. I don't think most folks pay attention to when something was made--except in the case of cars or electronics.

Maybe search for a comedy movie or another good movie that was made in that year and watch it with someone else--and when you see you enjoy it, then a dent will be made in your "theory." That's a start anyway. Anyone have any ideas? I didn't see many movies that year. Oh, and do everything you can to make the experience enjoyable--such as popcorn and a soda, etc.

What else came out in that year? Books? This one sounds entertaining:

Often it feels like the phrase "laugh-out-loud" is tossed around willy-nilly when describing a comical book—rarely does the work deliver on the promise. Not so in Irby's wackadoodle, raw, and relatable book of essays, which is guaranteed to make you LOL for real. Irby amassed a cult following with her *****es Gotta Eat blog, which she wrote while she was working full time at an animal hospital, and her memoir, Meaty, is in TV development by Jessi Klein, head writer for Inside Amy Schumer, and Broad City co-creator/star Abbi Jacobson. Now, in her book of essays, Irby shares her hilarious application to be a contestant on The Bachelorette, the life lessons she learned from her 14 years at the animal hospital, and what she's willing to do for love. (Purchasing and assembling equipment of the sexual kind with some Barbie-scented latex accoutrement gives you a taste of what's to come.)

I'm so sorry you're hurting so much, stillthinking94 I agree with what all the others have already wisely said better than I ever could. You've been given some great advice on this thread. I'd suggest to follow it if you can. I agree about trying to wathc or see something from that year. It may start to ease your mind a little bit. Do you see a therapist? Maybe that could help you. You could learn new ways to cope with your feelings. I'm so sorry you're going through all of this. I understand it must be very hard for you. You're definitely not alone in this. Remember that we're here for you if you need it. Feel free to PM me anytime. Let me know if I can do something to help you. Wish you good luck! Let us know how it goes. I'm so sorry you have to deal with all of this, stillthinking94. Please don't give up. Try to hang on. You're a strong, wonderful person! You're awesome! You're strong! You're a warrior! You've got this! You can do this! I believe in you! We all believe in you! We're all rooting for you! Please don't give up! Try to hang on! I'm so sorry you're going through all of this! You don't deserve to suffer at all! Nobody deserves to suffer at all!

Hi stillthinking94.

Well Maybe..Just Maybe, you are looking at this from the wrong direction.

Yes 2017 was a dreadful year for you, but you survived it...and with each new year it inches more & more into the past. You will most likely continue to carry some bad memories...and every new year will bring challenges and triumphs. But heeding our past, and taking life lessons forward with us, helps us create a brighter future for ourselves.

I wish you all the best moving forward stillthinking94, and welcome to PC. You will find we're a pretty good bunch here.

Hi. Would it be helpful to perhaps introduce yourself back to that year by having someone else present? Maybe watch something from that year as others have suggested but with a friend sitting nearby? Maybe too, pull out some pen and paper and set about the process of list making. What was good about the year? How did the good things affect you positively? What can you do to regain or relive those experiences.

Another little exercise comes to my mind that is straight out of my CBT tool chest.

What is the actual evidence you have that thinking about 2017 will have a negative result? What then is the evidence against this? What things can be done differently to avoid those things you are worrying about. Make a plan - what can you do in the event something negative comes your way? Is there a way to deal with it? Is there a way to change it?
