I heard the term "pink-clouding" on a Law & Order: SVU Episode one day and wondered what that term meant. So, I looked it up and found this definition.

CAUTION: TRIGGER WARNING, SO READ ARTICLE WITH CAUTION (trigger for sui, those in addiction recovery, and talk of s***** assault):

What Does pink clouding Mean? | Slang by Dictionary.com

Possible trigger:

It's important to not only see the warning signs in others, but also in ourselves when dealing with certain symptoms, thoughts, and behavioral problems related to our various mental illnesses.

What do you all think about this phenomenon?

I don't know. I saw that episode, but I have to say, I still don't really know what it means. I have had some attempts in the past and I would not describe my prior state as what I have always understood to have been that of a pink cloud. Quite the opposite. I'll be interested to see what others have to say about this.

Thanks for those who were able to read my story. I've left out a ton of details, but rest assured, I've been recovered from that for over a decade, and I'll be in recovery for the rest of my life. It's a process, but a doable one. I do what I can to self-care while I'm helping others. (((safe hugs)))

Strange. My mom was severely mentally ill and, although she spent some lengthy time in a psych hospital (back then called a "mental institution"), she never stuck with treatment.

Besides her many frightening and, for her and everyone who cared for her, painful symptoms, there was one mind-state that she referred to as "my pink cloud." She was extremely dissociative and her "pink cloud" was her peaceful, happy "hiding" place.

@BethRags (((safe hugs))) I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. It could be that her "pink cloud" was her safe place, or that maybe it has something to do with what I read at the link provided in the first post of this thread. That must have been hard for you to witness, especially if you were a child watching your mom range from painful symptoms to the "pink cloud" symptom. That must have felt confusing to see.

I can relate because I've felt confused at times from my own dad, whose emotions and even approaches to us kids were all over the place. He never had the pink cloud thing happen.

I could also see in my distal past how my own changes in emotions and that pink cloud must have confused a lot of people. I didn't mean to harm other people, but I did (unintentionally and in most cases, indirectly). I did my best to make amends while I was (and currently still am) working on my recovery in various areas.

At the same time, I've learned to understand that my symptoms are something I can manage, and during the times I couldn't manage them, I was struggling with mental illness. I was once (and sometimes still am) too harsh on myself for my mental illness symptoms, and I would put myself down a lot. Today, I realize that my mental illness is not something I need to apologize for as if it were my fault, but rather I could simply apologize for it showing up sometimes, or for me not having the tools yet to manage them appropriately, but I am not going to put myself down any longer for having them. It's what I live with. Some people can understand, whereas others cannot. I don't blame those who cannot understand it, I just feel like they aren't the healthiest people for me to be around if they cannot understand it, and I'm not the healthiest person to be around them either. But it doesn't mean that either one of us is at fault or wrong; it just means that mental illness is different from mainstream society.

I try to see things in a positive and realist light, even though it is hard to do at times when mental illness is at its peak.

Thank you, my dear friend @Fuzzybear

I hadn't heard of it before a few months ago, when I saw that one L&O: SVU episode. I looked it up and found the term. And then it hit me, it made total sense what I had experienced from the past. It's something that I thought could be discussed here, which I'm hoping was okay and not too triggering for anybody.

(((safe hugs))) Thank you for being my friend, Fuzzybear!

I really like L&O: SVU, too! For some reason, I feel like I'm experiencing justice just watching that show, even though I never received justice for all that has been done to me IRL. I also love Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay)! Her character and her acting are superb!

@bpcyclist (((safe hugs))) I'm sorry that you've struggled with attempts in the past. That must be really hard to deal with, including the memories of that time. Not everyone experiences the same things when it comes to sui ideation and attempts. Also, there are different types of sui ideation and attempts. Pink-clouding is only one sign out the many other signs that could take place before sui. For those who care about other people who are feeling sui, it's hard for them to see the signs sometimes. Sometimes it is impossible. And for most people, they don't know how to handle it. Also, even for us who have experienced that before, it's hard for us to handle when someone else feels that way, which is strange. It may be a little easier for us to understand, but responding to it is hard. The reasons and etiologies behind sui also differ.

I just think that both carers of those who are sui and those who are sui themselves all need help, together, and as much help as everyone can find. The more help, the more better the outcome, I think. That is, if the help is good and caring and ethical.

I’ve heard of people seeming happier before an attempt, but never heard this term before. Thanks for that. I think it was described as a phenomenon in which the person feels relieved in having made a decision.
People, we all know that the holidays with all the hype and false expectations can be really hard for us w emotional challenges. Keep a phone number for a helpline where you can find it when you are upset and stick to your self help practices. Keep exercising and call your friends, whatever works for you.
Thank you all for being here. Over the years you have helped me more than any one doctor. Gigantic hugs.
Great topics, Lilly. Keep it up girl!

I've never heard of the term but the phenomenon of experiencing europhia or happiness a few days before the attempt isn't unheard of. There's been cases where people have expressed being more giddy or happier before the event. Guess I learned something new today!
