Wellll, for starters I'm homeless after almost a year of been using ice living in the streets and some of my family decided I needed a "break" after the chick I was dating got me jumped because she thought I stole her clothes or some bull i m clean rn....for the past couple months ,but I have ditched my habit to drinking again (alcohol is always my fallback when I I'm receiving help from my family) I need to find a way to get past this I can barely concentrate on anything that I need to get done in I'm constantly bored because I avoid people and anytime I go anywhere I feel like I'm being watched. How do I end this nightmare are there any medications I can somehow talk the doctor into giving me? Or programs that help with housing I'm bout to get put back out on the streets again and need help before I go back to the same old never-ending cycle

Hello Dundermiffilin: Thank you for bringing your concern here to PC. I believe this is your first post here on PC. Welcome to Psych Central.
I'm sorry you find yourself to be in such a difficult situation. You mentioned being barely able to concentrate to get anything done & avoiding people because you feel as though you're constantly being watched. You wondered if there are medications you could take that would help. There certainly are medications that could help with the things you're struggling with. However I'm not a mental health professional (most of us here on PC are not.) So I can't tell you what medications might be appropriate. That would be something that would have to be determined by your doctor or a psychiatrist. What medications they might recommend is going to depend on what they determine your mental health diagnosis to be. Since I don't live where you live I can't really offer anything specific with regard to that. It also may depend on whether you live in a major metropolitan area or a small town or rural area. However, under any circumstances, what I would suggest is that you contact whatever state or county social services agencies are responsible for the area you live in. You could also check out any not-for-profit organizations that provide services to the poor & / or the homeless. Realistically I know how tough a situation this can be. There are too many homeless people all across the U.S. And with the current pandemic situation this is only likely to get worse as time goes on. But I think, under any circumstances, it's important to try & keep trying. I'm sorry I don't have anything more concrete to offer you. Perhaps there will yet be other PC members who will have more specific suggestions. There was a study where they gave lone rats in small enclosed spaces with zero stimulation the opportunity to self-administer cocaine. They all quickly became addicted. Then they gave rats in a large high stimulation environment, with lots of other rats, the same opportunity and they didn't become addicted.
Ice works by the same addiction routes as cocaine, so the results transfer to your predicament. I suggest you get yourself a wide variety of stimulation, and before you go anywhere know where you're going after that. That way you have less idle time for addictive thoughts to wander in. So, say you decide you're going to visit a family member. Figure out what you're doing after that: going to grab a bite to eat, say, and before you go to eat figure out where you're going after that. And try to get about all over town, and do things you wouldn't normally and/or in places you don't often go. It doesn't have to be amazing stuff, just lots of variation. Instead of grabbing food where you normally would, go five suburbs away and find a new place, for instance. Just getting a bite to eat could take up half a day if you want it to. What you're trying to do is rewire your reward centres to everyday life again. Try not to go to any place you've used ice - it will be associated with the drug in your mind and trigger cravings. You'll probably be tired due to withdrawal, so be realistic about planning things so you don't set yourself up to fail. Make small goals you can easily accomplish so you are using your reward system often. As it strengthens make the goals harder. If you're really addicted hard there's a plant called tabernanthe iboga that will cure addiction with one dose. The active chemical is called ibogaine. Check your local laws to see if you can get it. It's a powerful hallucinogen also, so do your research. |

You need intensive outpatient treatment or inpatient rehab. You are an addict. Just because its not meth doesnt mean you are not an addict. I havent met a single drug addict who can drink and still stay clean. In fact you shouldnt drink and say you are clean because you are not.
