Although I live in a state that has far fewer COVID 19 cases than a state like New York, I can’t shake the sensation that where I live in the South is no better off than areas hit much harder. In the region where I live the pandemic is not just a health scare, it’s a crisis of carelessness. The huge crush in general to reopen when cases are still skyrocketing and the numerous people who I see in public areas like grocery stores who lack masks and don’t practice increased personal space makes me shake my head in annoyance. My family and I have noticed in our town that traffic during the shelter in place order for our county was the same or even worse than usual. There is a shimmer of hope where I live, since I live in the boondocks and have only seen 15 cases for our county on the news, but I can’t even fathom the non-compliance to CDC recommendations being multiplied to an enormous scale in areas like my nearest metro area with over 1-2 million, where cases are nearing 8,000. I’ve been making the best of my situation, since I’ve become more and less a ranch hand on the land I live on, and needed a “people break” after several years of college and toxic relationships. But I’m a germaphobe to the max thanks to anxiety, so I’m constantly worrying about infecting my parents, my grandmother, or even my pets, even though we only get out to go to the grocery store now. As strange as it is for me to say this, being at home for almost a year with an inconsistent online job is what I needed. So I’m not wanting to wish my life away. However as I discussed in a previous post, I have began to shift my blame to people such as my careless friends as the sole cause of what is in my opinion, a worsening crisis making a reopening of my home state seem premature. My opinion may not be correct but that’s how I feel.

Does anybody else feel annoyed with society as a whole not practicing extra care during this time? No hate comments or political speak please, I’m just looking for someone who understands and feels the same way I do.

Dazedandconfused, I believe you have a lot of company in the way you feel. There is a covid discussion thread in the news forum. Many members expressed concerns similar to yours.

My emotions are all over the place lately, including struggles with anger. More than once I've had to bite my tongue to not go off on some covidiot for not wearing a mask and/or getting to close to me.

In the region I live in the shut-down has been tight. San Francisco is basically locked down altogether.

In my town almost everyone is wearing masks and distancing. Stores require all customers and employees to wear masks.

I feel really fortunate. Yes, there are definitely ignorant people here who whine, complain, and feel themselves to be victims of our state government. They can kiss mine, as far as I'm concerned.

The middle of next week, after a lot of deliberation, restaurants and retail are opening here. "Personal care" (salons and so on) won't open for 3 to 4 weeks, if cases stay stable. I'm in favor of not opening for a long while, frankly.

I think that the way most places are opening so soon is appallingly stupid. I fear for how they'll pay.

I admire you for having good, common sense (which is not very common!). Please do what you know you need to do, which is to stay healthy and help your loved ones to stay healthy, too

Thank you so much lizardlady and BethRags for your thoughtful and caring posts! I also appreciate the information about the COVID 19 forum that was created since I last posted. Both of my parents were micro majors so they have had many thoughts about mask-less people.

It also brings comfort to know that there are still communities that haven’t considered the pandemic to be over like everyone in my region. At least in the case of BethRags I’m hoping things will level out even quicker, and maybe the city halls and governments in my area can learn a thing or two from you! But it all starts with the individual and as far as I’m concerned you guys have been very encouraging and have even helped me feel more confident with whatever the pandemic is going to throw at us next.

PS: I’ve already started to use “covidiots” with my family and friends and it’s the funniest pandemic term that I’ve seen since the whole thing started!
