But why do they give you shots in your butt at mental health hospitals? I never understood it.

It doesn’t hurt or anything.

Does anyone know why they do this? When it happened to me I thought they were being inhumane jerks. But that was 10 years ago when I was 14. Looking back on it, there must of been some medical explanation since they did it at all the hospitals even the excellent 5 Star ones.

I don’t know if they still do that but my guess would be because it is a large muscle. I know they give thick shots there at the doctor’s. Maybe it’s a thick liquid or something? Was is haldol they gave you?

I’m not sure if they still do that or not. The last time I got a shot was In 2007.

I was at children’s psychiatric hospitals, so maybe they did things differently.

It's because it is a big muscle. I have had antibiotic shots there-they need the medication to be released slower or the amount that is being injected needs a bigger space to spread out in than an arm.

I was just in psych ER over the weekend (think airport lobby layover setting) and an “uncontrollable “ gal brought in against her will was stripped , given shots in the butt, and out in scrubs. So much for “trauma informed” settings.
