I have a significant history of getting hit in the head. As I got older, I developed a tendency to get headaches when I am very stressed out. I get angry when I get a headache because it reminds me of my childhood trauma of getting hit in the head.
Is there a natural cure for headache? I'm looking for either something I can take or a meditation exercise or technique. I have taken pain relievers but I don't want to take them on a weekly basis. It has now gotten to the point where even a small amount of stress can give me a headache. |

I have stress-related tension headaches frequently and have been experimenting with head stretches. Stretching my neck from pulling my head towards my chest helps sometimes. I close my eyes pull my head down to where my chin is on my chest and try to relax my muscles and meditate.
Here's a link to some stretches. There are also videos on youtube (search for tension headache stretches). This past week, I started trying herbs and vitamins to help with stress. Since I just started, I am not sure if I see improvement in reducing headaches yet. |

I have a problem with tension headaches and neck aches.
I've tried stretches, meditation, breathing exercises, lots of Advil, biofeedback, massage, chiropractic, baths... (not to mention therapy and the SSRI I'm on). I'm trying acupuncture tomorrow actually, not because I'm super hopeful about it, but because it can't hurt to try. Biofeedback and learning what I'm doing, physically, as a response to anxiety (to cause the headaches and neck pain) was somewhat helpful. Stretching is always good. I also recommend getting a tennis ball and massaging your shoulders by leaning on the tennis ball on the wall, if that makes sense. I was never hit in the head though. Have you had tests to make sure you don't have some physical reason for the headaches? That seems worthwhile in your case! |

And I think your instincts are right...it is not good to be taking pain relievers on a regular basis. That can cause more problems. I take a holistic view of health. Mind, body, and spirit work together in harmony. When something is out of balance, body communicates need via symptoms. Particularly with recurring headaches, it is important to address the underlying cause. Acupuncture has helped me with several problems and there are zero side effects. Just know that it does take more than one session to restore the body's balance. Though I was amazed that my sinus infections were eliminated after 4-5 sessions. My migraines (which had been a debilitating problem for years) were gone after ~ a month. I also meditate every day. I just use guided meditation videos on YouTube. I even do it during my acupuncture sessions...that is when the central nervous system is most relaxed...very important for wellness and immunity. I understand that you get angry d/t the association you have with headaches and childhood trauma...and yes, someone else pointed out that you may be living with traumatic brain injury or multiple concussions...those can lead to headaches but I don't know the extent of the physical assault you encountered. I think it's really important to be patient and kind to your body. Your body is trying to communicate a need to you. Peace and healing energy to you. |

I agree with you, KD1980. I don't like taking pain relievers on a regular basis either. I look for natural treatments or approaches. I've been trying some herb combinations for about a week and haven't notice any significant results. A multi-vitamin/mineral/herb supplement I started taking called Perfect Calm by New Chapter might be helping me a bit. A few times I have taken it and felt a bit more relaxed afterward. It isn't easy for me to determine results...I have so much going on with my anxiety. |

Yes, I had an MRI of the head done years ago and they said they didn't see any physical injuries. |

I'm pretty skeptical of acupuncture. I went once so far anyway, and I was too anxious to really see if it helps. I'm going to go one more time to see.
