Hello. New here... Diagnosed with bipolar 1 over 20 years ago but only sought treatment in the last couple years. Been seeing a psychiatrist for a while and haven't found a mood stabilizer that I can live with. Has anyone had luck with cbd oil?

Hi Dan
I have no first hand experience. I just don’t trust it at this point enough to try it. I hate to get government involved but there is no one that is setting a standard at this point. who knows what your getting in a bottle from company AB or C. What strength? Anyone can list any percentage amount and how can it be verified ? Between Bipolar and physical health problems I don’t want to muddy the waters further until I feel enough regulations are in place before I give it a try. __________________ Helping others gets me out of my own head ~ |

Hi Dan,
I am quite involved in the cannabis industry and I also wondered about CDB for Bipolar. It is true what Christina said about the quality of the product. There also hasn't been enough clinical trails to verify that CBD is an effective treatment and if it is what dosage it should be taken. According to doctors I have spoken to CBD only gets activated by the Endo-Cannabinoid System when THC is involved. Research has been done to verify that THC can trigger psychosis. I am not saying that it won't work or that it isn't good for you, I just think more regulation and information is required. Take care. |

I have bipolar, and take a very low thc gummy. Even though a cbd product may claim to have no thc, it does have some. Think of cbd as "non alcoholic" beer. The gummies I take have less than 1% thc, yet are labeled as "no thc". Even the cbd you get in smoke shops and gas stations has thc, yet just not enough to be regulated. I live in California, where there is an endless supply of information readily available. I wrote an article in 2014 on how cbd helps with high functioning Autism, and it was well received. I see that you live in Tennessee, which I assume laws and availability are very different If you do decide to seek out further information, I would start with Cannabis Now Magazine which can be found online, Harborside Health Center's website which can also be found online. I would also consider the source of each bit of information as there are a lot of sources who are trying to tarnish the health benefits of cbd medicine. If you need any further help, I may or may not be able to point you in the right direction.

The difficulty in asking for opinions here is we are all peers and not able to judge the possible effects of including an alternative therapy with the meds you currently take. The best one to ask is your psychiatrist that is prescribing meds for you. If what they are prescribing is not keeping you stable, then maybe you could ask them to reevaluate the products and dosages you are on. There are many possible options. I have a friend that has spent a lot of money on home remedies with limited or no observable results. The people that promote CBD oil may claim things about it but gambling if it will work is not something I would bet on without an endorsement from medical professionals familiar with my situation. __________________ Super Moderator Community Support Team "Things Take Time" |

Hello and welcome to Psych Central.
I echo what Candc has said. This is not something you should experiment with on your own. I see you're in California so you may be able to get a prescription for cbd if you talk to your doctor about it. |
